My gal just got a CO from NJC. As I read through the posts and the school website, the school seem to focus lot on Art and Music programs. My gal is not into aesthetics and sports. She is from a uniform group and prefer indoor activity.I am wondering if she can fit well in such environment.

They r using a few difficult words to differentiate the A and A* student.
U can't do this to differentiate A and A* students.
Now we are saying the guideline for setting the test item is not adhere to. Whether a child can score well in reading should depend on the ability of child to read the passage fluently and accurately with no hestiation and with appropriate expression.. -

If such words are used, it will include a pinyin. That's why pinyin are taught right at start of Kindergarten..While some find the polyclinic topic a tougher one, my ds think otherwise cos the playground pic has tougher to describe things like sandpits, the springy horse n spade which r less common compare to wheelchair, bandages etc. So I would say both have its own difficulty depending on child. Eco garden might sound difficult too for us maybe but probably not for the kids who r more exposed to these gardens at some point in learning about science. Maybe we think too much?
Btw, if a word not in syllabus cannot be use in oral, then what about in comprehension? Not uncommon at times to see unfamiliar words. -

We cannot comment much about picture as it there is no syllabus for that..Children are expected to converse about any pictures given. However, for Cl oral reading passages, the words used must be within the scope in their Clestheric:
The group of students that had the Clinic for chinese oral also had a tougher English Oral on Eco Garden whereas the other group have a much easier time with Chines(playground) and English( Library).
Does it mean that one group of students is penalized more than the other ?
textbook.
Hi, the terms for playgroundvs clinic are quite different in terms of difficulty. I had expected something similar in standard...for both days eg playground and shopping mall.
The same group of students are penalised twice
Yes..I agree..the child must be have the Chinese vocab for the following: pharmacy, wheelchair, crutches, pharmacist...which most kids would not know as we don't use those vocab in daily lives.as compared to playground which is usually tested.. -

Girl's teacher told them to practice reading fm p3 to p6 textbks...the word mayb in 6A n other levels too
The总识读和识字表 covers all the words that they need to learn at the end of 6-year education. It is not just P6 syllabus. The reason for having such list is to guide teachers in setting test items that only contain words within the syllabus.Of course you will be exposed to words beyond this list during normal lessons. However, when come to testing especially National Exam or Sch exam, setters are expected to follow this list. That's why in school exam, you will see pinyin behind some words especially comprehension passages.estheric:
Not sure if the word 溪 is in text books or not but I have just seen this word v often recently in DS's Chinese spelling n homework. Maybe shd check the books again? Or maybe it is in HCL textbooks only?

Please refer to the last few pages of your children's Chinese 6B Textbook 小学高级华文识读和识字表。溪is not in the list. Personally, I feel it is unfair testing as children tested on Day 1 are not given any word that is out of syllabus. It causes the child to panic when they get to read an unknown word. Without understanding the meaning of the word, the reading tempo will be affected. By writing to SEAB, I just want to highlight to them the inconsistencies in the testing. In school oral passages, if the word is not taught yet,it will come with a pinyin in the bracket. -
Understand there was a word (xiao xi) - little river, in the passage today which has not been taught before. Can any parent verify if this is true?
My dd said she never came across that word 溪 before, so she skipped it.
Yes..this word 溪is not within the syllabus. According to my fren who is ex tr, oral reading passage must contain words that is being taught. If the passage that include word that is not taught, they must include the pinyin. I am going to feedback to SEAB about this and get a clarification from them.
Just called MOE hotline. Was told we could seek clarification by emailing SEAB at contact@moe.gov.sg so I feel parents with the same concerns as me should email them personally too.
