It's a real pity that the effect of the pressure of getting good results is impacting a child's view of a wonderful educational opportunity, especially when it's designed specifically for them.
Even though she has not experience it, she has seen her friends works, and some feedback from them. She saw her P5 GEP friend was upset as she did not do well for her exam, since P4.hamster:
GEP is not that scary and tough, but very fun, smaller class size.... How can a small kid knows how to make such decision when she hasn't experience it at all?
If you are being selected, take the chance to try it out. What is there to be afraid about?
She may be young to make decision, however we are not the one who study we said easy but she may not think is easy. As I have mentioned she will have to go through for 3 years, whether like it or not and it is not easy to go back to mainsteam.
Nowadays kids want to have a share of opinion, not during our years time parent makes decision and we have no say..
I'd like to say results are not important, the journey is what counts, a rare chance of a life time, see the real GEP for what it's meant for, etc. But I suppose the pressure faced by the children, and maybe even more so the parents nowadays is quite immense.
What am I rambling about? This is after all, the kiasuparents forum.
Yes... Rambling a little is good.. Even you are in GEP especially during their P4 need a lot of support from parent to help them on their works.. It is not easy.. Like my DD saw her P5 friend, not doing well... You will be wondering how come?? They are smart becos they are the top 1% to get into this program.. They are smart to stay on the top. Other parent look up on them wow GEP kids..very clever...
But not all GEP will do very well.. Don't be surprised that in a class can be half struggle for their works..maintain their overall result to 80%.
I know a few GEP kids parent very rich.. Send them to GEP tuition plus engage one to one GEP tutor to coach their kids.. Sure is true they told me my kids no problem at all...
I cannot promise her that if she cannot cope sure can go back to her normal friends see her buddies again.. I told her sorry I cannot promise that. Since she has so much worries.. Then is better not to stress her up further.
Not getting into GEP is not the end of the road. Again confidence is one of the important factor. -

RE: GEP 2013 - Screening & Selection
My DD afraid we will be very disappointed of her decision. She keep asking if we are ok that she is not GEP. Are we feeling upset etc…
We told her is does not matter if you are GEP or not… Most important you are happy and not stress up, prepare well for P4 next year. No point you get in just becos you think is a waste to give up or want to make us happy… But end up you are not enjoying the process.
Whatever the decision is… GEP or not have not to take the same national exam is PSLE, and no guarantee that GEP will sure go to top school… May be some parent may not feel the same as me… My elder son din go GEP also did very well in PSLE, his score is above 270. While my son friends… Who is GEP score below 250.
Nothing is guarantee!! Most important confidence is one key to a child success. -

Thanks!
So long as your daughter is happy with her decision, that's fine. She'll still do well in mainstream and her school will probably give her a lot of opportunities. Hamster, if you and your daughter are not entirely sure of your decision, I suggest you go for the MOE GEP briefing to find out more. Of course the briefing's objective is to sell GEP to you and it will be very positive. But it might be good for you to listen so you and your dd know for sure that you've made the right decision and you have no regrets.hamster:
My DD has rejected the GEP offer. We support her decision.
She told me she felt a little waste and a little upset to decide not to take up as she told us she is happy remain in the mainstream, she has spoken to some of her GEP friends, and she think she is more happy staying in the mainstream as she will not has any problem of coping it.
I actually did call up the GEP branch, cos we will be travelling, you are right! They keep telling me to try it out first, if she cannot cope it can always transfer back to maintsteam, but I know is quite difficult.
I told her what is GEP expectation, what she will learn etc.. Well she told me she is not interested in their program. I guess she know she need to compete with the smart one, and stress level will b quite high in this classes.
I can understand her concern. Well if she is not prepared to handle GEP works.. No point of forcing her. -
RE: Nanyang Primary
How many HA classes are there in Primary 4?

Similar to my friend case, her DD did not take up the offer and remain in her current school. She enjoy all the attention from school, parent, classmates. She had became the main attraction just becos she is offered but declined to take up.
Yap, a friend of mine. Her child rejected the offer. He was the only one in the sch that made it to GEP but he refused to transfer cos a new environment and he has no friend there and long travel journey. He has many loving teachers in the sch and since he is the smartest there, he is always given the priority in whatever games or challenges to represent the sch. I think he makes the right choice and moreover, if a child is good, he can shine in whichever sch he is in. Who knows, he may be the top scholar of his current sch in his PSLE, while it may not be the same if he has transferred.hamster:
Btw.. Anyone child was offered a place in GEP but did not take up the offer?
Is it becos your child don't want to or parent not interested to take up the offer?
Any reason? -
