Precisely the point according to your case.

No concern with repaying study-loans...parents dont need to downgrade/sell roof.

While it is agreeable that there are risks in any investment. They are done with disposable funds, can afford to lose type of monies.

Am quite curious about your age...where the braveness arises from.. 😂

A 30 year old doctor working as a full time locum here can expect to make about 20k a month or 240k a year.

Like all financial investments in life, there are some risks involved but the returns can be substantial in this case.

Parents tend to make it a 'Mission' in supporting their offspring, over-stretching their finance in some cases and often overlooking their own needs. Of course there are happy ending, nonetheless sad ones are very common as well. In our case, we decide to use cash for local tuition fees after some maths, without a ROI. We thought, it is also parents' responsibility to provide funding for their educations. In extreme case (fortunately didn't have to) where finance is tight to support an overseas med-study, parents has to explain and encourage alternative to secure a full/partial study-loan, surely they can handle. Just won't show-hand & forget about living well for ourselves.

      Med is quite diff.
I often hear med-students saying their peers/seniors in finance filed is expecting to draw more than them before turning 30. For mbbs, at the end of the 5 yrs bond, 8-9k/Mth is quite normal. Beyond the bonded years, that's where the income grows, depending on what specialization path they take. Frankly, poor doctor is hardly heard of.

DD had a shot at uniform scholarship before applying to med.
After 2nd interviews; The same interviewer in uniform with 2 crests explained that eventual role is likely be part of the command team, policy makers. She decided not to pursuit and reasons were, she wants to be real doctor and money is not her priority. She decides to make us poorer 😂

Like many med-students, they are aspired to be a doctor for a good cause ; They knew money will come later.
But most parents not in medical field; no clue or little clue, what is means to be a doc in their ds's/dd's perspective.
In plain words, most parents think about earning power for being a doc, not wrong, just different.

DD is finishing yr3, soon yr4 starts.
She says, med-study is interesting but challenging as always. many of them feels 'Jaded', but pressing on to complete what they started. She wasn't concern about future earning in the past...Now I sensed she is starting to have thoughts on future planning that ties to finance. Now, this is part of growing up and soon they will be on their own.

What started as a pure passion to be a doc, a scientific healer, eventually cannot escape the real world expectation where success is somehow measured by eventual wealth (among other aspects) that comes along. Parents were right all along, some say its because we taken more salt then the rice they eaten 😂

      Just sharing for thoughts..

I know a few 30 year old insurance/property agents who make 20k monthly too. There are many roads to success.. especially if money is how you define it.[/quote]

If you are a parent with a notion of selling house to finance overseas med course, please don't and do give alternatives a thought.

Singaporean in local med course are automatically given roughly ~80% (~$120k/yr) grant, paying ~20% (~$30k/yr) tie to the 5yr bond. I have yet to know of anyone rejecting the local grant owing to the 5 yr bond from entry point, and the important of that 5 bond has been explained.

If truly interested in med, build up the portfolio early and better the chance to be in the shortlisting.
No need perfect RP, 87.5 is relatively good enough. The issue of candidates with perfect/near perfect RP missing the shortlisting is always the big blank in the portfolio folder.

You need to know that many (high double digit number) overseas med students were granted admission last year to local med school owing to the pandemic. Most med students had to step down a year to match the level of learning. Despite so, they are really fortunate if you could read into the context and change of event.

Matter of facts and not a secret, graduates from overseas are invited to return to SG with some grants to offset their tuition fees. Not all will be given that option, criteria is not known to many.

Hope we can share info that is of merits and we get what is needed to move forward.

The 5 year bond is for the local medicine course while the grant is for those that study medicine overseas.

It is really very difficult to get into medicine locally (both NUS and NTU). You need to get almost perfect A level grades just to be called for the interview (only 1 B allowed for the 6 subjects, I believe). And the success rate for the interview is probably at most 50% only (based on the number called for interview).

Conversely, to study medicine in UK, 2As and a B for A levels should be enough to get you into a recognised medical school there (the top medical schools there of course need better grades). Plus they don't even look at what you get for GP.

Congrats to ALL proud Mum & Dad on son/daughter getting a place in med.

Enjoy that fulfilling peace and happiness…it stays for very long, in my case.

For those in waiting, keep the faith.
Trust that all has done their very best.
If a place is not granted this year, don’t rush into accepting another course…
Take a gap-year, serve the NS, do something meaningful, look at feasible alternative…try again next year.

Let's not make the suggestion to sell house, funding the overseas course + living fees.

While parents have the responsibility to provide and fund the education, it has to be gauged.
Risking their own retirement needs and comfort is a no-no. Parents are human and many forget to live well after offspring comes along.

While parents made/make plan with offspring in mind; offspring's plan may not include parents...look around, have a thought. If unable to get a place in local U + undying aspiration and will only study med course, please consider taking a study loan and repay it by the son/daughter.

There is nothing wrong with the 5 yrs bond which tied to the grant (~80% of fees).
That 5 yrs in an established environment is where these young docs need to be.
Loaded knowledge in the head vs real world in medical field...before deciding going into life long specialize field.
Look at the bond period with a right perspective.

If you child really want to study medicine and cannot get a place here, can consider studying overseas.

As it is, to study medicine in Singapore now, the uni fees over 5 years is about 150-170k (living expenses over the 5 years not included). Study medicine in UK probably 500-550k is enough (uni fees plus living expenses over 5 years). Assuming you get the 100k grant, it is about 400-450k.

With some HDB flats now approaching 1 million dollars, can do your sums and consider.

Congrats to all supportive parents !

For those who are still in waitlist, hang on there.
Past years, there were always ‘few’ being offered at the very last minute (July), before medsku starts in August.
Possible reasons are someone withdraw from it or decided to go overseas…no one actually knows except for admission registry in school.

For those applied and not being shortlisted for interview this year, consider taking a gap-year, use the time wisely to build up the portfolio…

I knew someone gotten a place in 2nd attempt (1st time was not call up for interview).
Fact is, the GP was a ‘C’ !
The different was the portfolio, volunteered for many related works and some with fantastic testimonies.
The submission was very well organized with the gap year.

Applicants for medsku usually can list many academic achievement/awards…
Not many can list meaningful volunteering works while they are in JC/IB.

So, for those academically qualified but missed out this year, self-check if med is your calling.
Do not rush into accepting another course unless exhausted all chances.

A fren told me, the DD with perfect RP did not even get a shot at interviews/tests (few years back).
Enrolled into the next best course and is doing well, but, not getting into medsku has always been a regret…Gap year wasn’t consider during their time.

Have a thought…The GAP YEAR is really worth thoughts.
