    • RE: Q&A - PSLE Chinese

I was also looking for model compo of pass year PSLE Chinese questions and did not find any, until recently I chanced upon this book in Popular by EduVision (cover page purple in color). You can go and find it in Popular. My DD is reading it and told me the 作文 are very well written, better than the normal compo books. Got all 4 types of compo for both Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese.

      Great_Minds,

There are 2 types of compo, picture description看图作文 or 命题作文
      How should kids choose?
My child always likes to choose 命题作文, but it seems quite difficult to get high marks for 命题, 看图作文 is easier, isn’t it?

    • RE: 2011 PSLE Result : Appeal to MOE to review the Test Result

Check out this article if you can understand the maths... marks for A/A*/Pass is not same every year and in fact, it does not mean that much for the T-score. Very low A for all 4 subjects can turn out to be less than 200...

    • PSLE T-Score Secrets Revealed

Found an interesting article about PSLE T-score. Reminded me of previous discussion in this forum about marks of A/A*/Pass. I have also verified with MOE that the marks of A/A*/Pass for different PSLE subjusts are confidential and not a fixed value.

Anyway, would like to share the article here. The interesting conclusion from this article is if you would like to get high T-score, you should work harder on language subjects, that is English and MT.

      Happy reading.

    • RE: Enrichment Programs for Maths Modelling

Just to share, called GreatMinds this morning and inquired about their courses and fees. Thinking to send my older one to their Math class next term...

For normal classes: P1,P2 - $25 for 1.5 hr. P3,P4 - $35 for 2hrs. P5,P6 - $40 for 2hrs. Max 12 students. For Competition classes, fees will be slightly higher depending on which competition class it is.

I feel it is quite reasonable, kinda standard for a group class, definitely not like those so-called high-end ones like TLL :slapshead:

Their competition class seems to be a steal. As far as I know, for the competition classes or those GEP preparation classes, charges are usually double normal classes in other centers.

Hi HCH, thank you thank you for sharing. I might want to attend the workshop to see how good are the teachers. If good, I might want to consider them as well. Thank you.

      Hi laughingcat,

I attended their workshop and was quite impressed. The principal, a PhD from China, designed a very comprehensive system with about 10 modeling methods to resolve math questions of various levels. Personally I found it is very useful. If parents can coach and have time, you may want to attend the workshop to get a better idea of modeling method in primary math, so that you can coach your kids. If not, I guess you can put your kids in their school as the same method is taught in their center.

By the way, all other workshops are all free, but this one for modeling is chargable, about $50 for a 2-3 hours session.

In fact, I got to know about this center because my friend's daughter is with them. His daughter won platinum award of Singapore Primary Math Olympiad this year. So looks they are really strong in Math although it is still a quite new center. 😄

GreatMinds is very strong in math modeling. They are probably the best in SG in this area.

      Hi HCH,

Are you a teacher at GreatMinds? Is there any evidence or article sharing that GreatMinds is the best in Maths Modeling that you can share? Coz as a parent, I would really like to know what is my options.

GreatMinds is very strong in math modeling. They are probably the best in SG in this area. They even have workshops (usually in school holiday) to teach parents how to coach your kids math modeling. I attended it and found it useful. The 2 PhD founders developed about 10 levels of modeling to cover all primary level math questions from easiest to most difficult.

I think modeling is very important in Singapore primary level Math, as our kids can not grasp algebra concepts at this young age, yet the questions are soooo difficult …some of them I myself also can not resolve…Using models seems to be the only way to help them out…

For primary level math, they charge $20 per hour. The class is 2 hrs… karinchung, your $70 is probably their competition class? Heard they are very strong in math competition training also. Got students winning top awards in competitions like Singapore Math Olympiad every year…
