the store at Lot 1 is great! there is a clear selection of humanities, science, math titles. there is this lady called Joon. she is very experienced with school titles.

I was at CCK today, and I thought I would drop by Lot 1 Popular. This lady that you mentioned - Joon - is very good! She is knowledgeable, and made recommendations of various assessment books. :rahrah:

Recently, I went to United Square to check on a school workbook. Was out of stock and did ask the staff to provide me the outlets having that particular book. She did but didn't know they can help transfer book over. So I will give satisfactory rating for united square since they never inform me this option.

Last year, I was repeatedly informed by the United Square staff that they will help me make a transfer of an assessment book. Or that they can place an order with the supplier, which I think might actually be faster.

But when I went back to United Square a few days later, they still had not gotten the book. This had happened a number of times. Now, I had completely gave up hope on United Square. I don't go back there anymore, even those I worked in Novena. :frustrated:

I have the same experiences at Popular North Point (where I am staying near to) and Popular United Square (where I am working within close proximity to). The staff in both locations are friendly, but they do not bother to order the books from the supplier, much less call to tell me the books have arrived. They will just say the books are out-of-stock, and that I can try another outlet.

I guess maybe there is complacency on the part of Popular, because they do have a monopoly when it comes to assessment books. They know we have to get the books from them, because there is no other place to buy them from. It’s a different situation with stationaries, where they face competition from Du Yi, Stationary World, and SKP, so maybe they are more up to scratch.

I used to live with $1/day in sec 1 and 2, and then $2/day in upper secondary. But I am giving my boy $10/day now. He said his school tuckshop closes at around 1pm, and he needs to go to a nearby coffeeshop for lunch before his remedial. The food there isn't cheap. Oh well... I guess I am spoiling him. Sigh.

You shouldn't compare with what you used to get in dollar amounts, even if it wasn't as long ago as some of us. It's best to compare what you could have afforded with what you used to get as prices have generally gone up. But $10 a day sounds generous. Do sec school canteens close so early? Many sec students each lunch in school because of CCA and other activities.

Yes, you are right, there is inflation, etc, so I shouldn't compare. But I can't help it. The good thing is that my boy does save up his excess money, so it's not that bad. I don't give him allowance over the weekends too, unless he has to go to school. He did tell me that many of his friends get more than $10/day though.

    • RE: Past-Year Secondary/O-Level/IP Exam Papers

There are alot of websites that offer free exam papers these days, so I don't think it's a good idea to pay for them. (I did hear that one guy selling these exam papers is very rich, and drives a Maserati around. True?) Anyway, here is a website for free downloading: http://www.smashingexams.com.sg

    • RE: Is tuition absolutely needed from Sec 1?

I don’t think tuition is necessary for sec 1. Upper secondary, yes. But for sec 1, I guess the child should try to find his own way first, academically as well. But if results are poor, then I guess tuition is needed.

      Hi Dr Daniel,

Could you kindly help my son with the following question:

Do you by chance also know of any way to remember the components of crude oil and the solubility table?

      Thank you!
