Kar Kar,

How I got into KKH rehab was through this course. I expressed interests in attending this course and a SLT called me. She told me she need to access my child to see if he is suitable for his course or not.

After assessment, the SLT found that it will not be useful for me to attend this course as my boy is verbal. However, they ask me if I am interested in going for their SLT Therapy instead. Of cos I am interested. That's how I got into KKH Rehab SLT. Hope this helps.

Try enrolling for the course and see where it leads you.
that's a good coincidence. are you enjoying subsidized rate then?
wont' they ask you if your child is verbal over the phone before face to face assessment?

mashy:

U can just insist on getting an allergy test done. Mine was based on rashes and asthma. Also quite far removed but the doctor simply agreed. U can get a referral from the allergy clinic doctor for the rehab OT and ST. U can say his speech is slow and gross motor skills (or fine motor etc) is delayed. Then they will refer u to see the rehab side. Remember to ask for rehab specifically. If they offer CDU, turn it down, ask them to go rehab coz 'faster'.

Yes, rehab is not part of the Eipic. They are different departments. Eipic is run by kkh CDU. If u wanna send your kid to Eipic, then u can go thru CDU but that will also mean getting your child assessed. In rehab, they will assess only based on age appropriate skills and not whether they have ADHD/autism etc.
mashy and other mummies,

have you tried – The Hanen Program for Parents in KKH rehab? more than words seem quite good. If i get to see doc in Rehab, i will ask for subsidized rate for this program.

Mummies,

I duno in this situation of my life now should I divorce?

I don't hav parents of siblings to fall back for help.

Do u think I can handle alone w my son ?

Any single mum here could advise me how u manage all alone ??
helplessmum3,

i am not reallly advising you but support you regardless outcome. no one knows how much pain a mother has to go through except being a mother of special needs kid. even the father or close family member wont be able to share the same sentiment and stress level. Afterall, in the end of day, you all are still a family. If you feel it's too hard to keep the family intact, or simply you are too tired to, you can just ignore them for a while and see how. maybe moving out for a while with your son helps to calm you down a little? you are way to stressed at this stage to think straight.

if you have done all these to help your son in the past years alone, what's the difference of doing it in future years being with your hubby or without? Sometimes our stress shortsights/blindfolds us. I have to admit it happens to me all the time. it takes me a while to realize the rationale of other suggestions people provide wholeheartedly and the fact that i completely ignore without much thinking then.

My son was not assessed before he was admitted to the kkh rehab for OT and ST. So I don't see how u can't gain access to it.
And I also sent him for allergy test. Same thing, I don't understand why u can't send yours for it. I just said mine was always coughing and I just wanted to test it and I wanted my younger gal to get tested too.
In fact, u can request to see a dr on allergy in kkh. Get the test done and get a referral to see the OT and ST rehab from that doctor.
mashy,
tks for the tips, i was understood and assumed too much. everytime i called KKH or ARC, they all said i needed to get assessed in CDU to enjoy the benefits. how to get admission to KKH rehab for OT and ST?

for allergy test, i called KKH. to enjoy subsidies rate of the test, I need to go polyclinic to get referral. we went to poly a week ago for my son's skin rashes, doctor told me it's atopic and no allergy test is needed. I didnt tell doctor my concern as i fear it will leave some record. at this stage, i dont want it to be in the system as yet.

But mashy, i found this below. from your experience, KKH rehab's OT and ST doesnt belong to EIPIC service.
4. How do I apply for EIPIC for my child?
Your child should be seen by a doctor at any polyclinic or private practice. The doctor will refer your child to a Child Development Unit (CDU) at KKH, NUH or SGH. A doctor from the CDU will assess your child and recommend him/her for early intervention if necessary.
one question pop in my mind. how many of you have tried EIPIC centres? i wonder the percentage of using private vs EIPIC.
Kkh is not the only route to get into govt subsidised EIPIC under CEL. You can get a private psychologist do a psychological assessment for your child and the psychologist can do a referral to EIPIC.
ImMeeMee.
you are right, i take a look at the admission criteria again. as long as he's sg citizen or PR, and he gets diagnosed.
On constipation: my Asperger's daughter suffered from that too. When she was younger, we found that a prune or some other dried fruits a day plus plenty of water solved that problem. We stopped the daily prune when she was around 8yo, but made sure she gets lots of fruits and veg plus water daily.

On ABA: when my daughter was young, we had never heard about ABA, but the literature did talk a lot about behaviour modification. From the little I have read about ABA, it's a formalised system but essentially the same thing. We did that with my daughter from the time she was a toddler, even before we realised that she might have ASD traits. It does work, but I don't think you need a lot of special training as long as you read up and have common sense to tailor it to individual needs. More importantly, you need to be consistent and it has to be applied at every opportunity, so my being a SAHM was actually crucial, now I think about it. I can't remember how severe your son's condition is, but we have managed with my Asperger' girl up to now (16yo). She wasn't in Singapore school as we lived overseas, so I'm not sure how tough that will be, but we plan to put her back into the Singapore system for 'A' levels. Surely there must be some principals and teachers in Singapore who are willing to cut some slack for ASD kids. Basically, my arrangement with my daughter's teachers was that they should accommodate her only as far as it didn't overburden them (the teachers), and anything that needed extra work, they should tell me and I would take responsibility. So I became my child's advocate with the teachers. I know that teachers are too busy to spend that much time on a single child, and I was already grateful that they would accommodate my child as much as they did.
slmkhoo,
staying at home does help a lot only when you know how to interact with the kid and keep him engaged. i am a mother without much instinct of game playing with kids. I am trying to change myself by having some 1 hr a day structured play hour else i dont know how to help him outside of his ABA session. I try not to apply ABA too much as I perfer to do the RDI way. so currently i am building a strong foundation on relationship with my son. still working on this and at the same time i try to look for more games and make myself more interesting. Someone analyzes my hobbists and tells me that none of my hobbist is child-involving. I need to change so that i can involve my son more. As i am staying with my parents, i dont do much of house work. I am fortunate in this aspect. but at the same time, i am losing some opportunities to do house work together with my son (something i learn from RDI program).

and prune, are you give prune juice or fresh fruit? i see prune juice of sunrise or sunsweet brand from korea in super market. other dried fruits? aren't they all processed? good?

some updates on my son
my son is showing good improvement since a few months back, although he has still his own problems. his echolalia and speaking inappropriately is one of the big issues. His eye contact is much improved, and often calls for baba mama for fun response. He calls baba hunderds of times a day in different tone and he does look at baba for response. then again, too much is not good either. He is still addicted to songs and music and beans in the jug. we try not to give too much musical toys except for feeding water time for his constipation issue. his fine and gross motor skill needs some work on. he has difficulty doing big movement imitation, or he's not willing. hes can threading well now.:-)
Where do u intend to relocate your son to? your whole family relocating? my son went to kkh and was referred to join eipic program. it's being subsidized based on salary group
to nugget,
yes, it's whole family relocating. my son hasn't done kkh assessment, judging on his condition and his age, i dont think i will get anything kkh until much later. so i guess eipic program is gone out of the questions.
Singapore is the safest Plc in the world .
If u hav money don't need to go kkh... Just go private eipic in Singapore n go international school don't go singapore govt school ..
To helplessmum3
Yes, I love SG but it's not cheap without government support. I dont have the money for long term private school and it's hard to get into international school with Sg passport, isn't it? else all rich men will send their sons to escape the sg education system.
Kar kar, if I may, whether or not to relocate is a personal decision. But the way I see it, everything comes in a package - where there is good there is bad. Its the same in SG n everywhere else.

Since you have not found out enough about home ground, do give yourselves a chance to find out more before deciding. While the situation is not perfect, there are still support programs out there for us to make good use of.

I find that ASD awareness in SG has been improving. There is another report on the need to have holistic approach for ASD in ST today. With more reports like these n more attention from the govt on this area, I think that one day the infrastructure for ASD adults will improve too, now that the educational framework for ASD has improved.
to ImMeeMee
yes, you may. all honest opnion is helpful. you are right that i need to find out more about homeland. besides here, i dont find any other support group out there, which is willing to share information. others forums i visited have little exchanges. Do you wanna share the support groups/programs that you know?

Thank you all mummies!! i will continue to equip myself with more knowledge and information.

Dear mummies,

Hope you had a good wkend break. Thanks for the comments you had for my decision. Well, well. I am still looking for the resource i can possibily find. Two things that come to my mind, one is my boy's gut problem, another is the new therapy RDI program i want to embark on.

some background on my boy. I decided not to bring him to KKH for assessment as i know him well. at his age, 2 years and 3 months, most likely i will get a date for review 6 months later. without it, i probably can't enjoy the service provided by KKH.

For mummies who has gotten the clinical assessment in KKH, the \"more than words\" henan';s program is quite good. You can subsidies from the gov so you only need to pay half of the program fee. I wish i could get that too.

My boy has some atopic rashes as the GP terms it. and his constipation problem pains him a lot. his poo is super duper big, which brings him a lot of pain in the first few pushes. Hes now very reluctant to poo. I wanted to get him allergic test, now i guess i can't because i dont have a good reason in government system to do that. my next step is probably to find a DAN! doctors (expensive, i know). Only two clinics i find online are
DAN (Defeat Autism Now)

I came across some talks on RDI approach, and i like their philosophy. however, i dont think mummies here in the support group use this approach much. I read somewhere online that their service is in the range of $200-300/hr, which is more expensive of my home ABA session. There are 5 RDI-certified consultants in SG now. I wonder if any mummy knows about any of them. afterall it's parent training program, i can use my half day to get involved.

slmkhoo:
Dear ladies, please don't fall into the trap of 'If my kid has to do xxx in P1, then I must make sure he practises it through K2'. Many skills are development-dependent, and just waiting that extra year can make the difference between picking up something easily and having to slog at it for ages. My daughter (nearly 16yo) has Asperger's and dyspraxia, and writing was also difficult for her, but once she got into P1, she did whatever the teacher asked her to, and although her writing was very poor, it improved. She only wrote more legibly by P3. Don't worry about NT kids' yardsticks, you can always explain to the teacher why there is a lag. More importantly, don't kill your child's motivation by demanding too much too soon. All your other fears - social skills, organisations skills, paying attention etc - we've been through it all. Take it one step at a time, and let your child lag behind NT kids if he needs it. Life is long, and there is no need to rush. Just my thoughts.

reality makes us be kiasu. thanks for sounding this out. I am taking my time and pacing myself although i am still lost. I am still trying to search for as much as resources i can find in sg land.

Hey gals and guys, its been a long while that i havne’t been following this thread. maybe a month or so. Firstly, i wanna thank you for the support and encouragement that i found in here. I have been spending a lot of time deciding for my son’s therapy and future. I spend most of my time taking care of my son, at the same time i need to squeeze out time to read on ABA and RDI and talked to many people and flew out of the country to attend seminar. unfortunately, i still dont know much the resource here in singapore, a country where i live my everyday life. I didn’t bring my son to KKH. Maybe that’s the reason. i am making a decision. A decision of relocation for my son. I need your help to advise me what’s available resource around in sg. Me and my son are both singaporean. it will be so sad to leave the country because we dont know how it can help us. I need your advice.

I know some of the answers for my below questions but i might be missing a big picture.
1) any good RDI/floor time therapist that you are currently seeing
2) any government help? money? subsidies?
3) any family support group for parents like me?
4) any mainstream school’s accepting our kids well? how’s school teachers readiness?

thank you very much in advance and Have a great 2013!

Happy new year!

Thanks for the comprehensive write up. Yes DAN is not considered mainstream and hence there is some skepticism.

Just for my learning, is there a reason why the mercury level in you child is high? It's a heavy metal that doesnt accumulate unless through consumption. How does it get into the body?

Hi ImMeeMee,
I guess it was because I ate a lot of fish, and my son started eating fish ever since he could take solid food. Perhaps he was born with impaired ability to excrete mercury, so the mercury keeps accumulating. Also, the more mercury you have in your body, the harder it is for the body to excrete mercury. So, its a chicken and egg story =(

omg, i actually like fish a lot and i ate a lot of them during pregnancy. cod fish and normal not high in mercury fishes, i dont know why my son still becomes like that.

may i know how to get the hair test done for mercury level check?

mummies, my sons officially 2 years old today. I am glad that i know all of you through this media. He had two big pieces of birthday cakes and lots of watermelon that he couldn’t have his dinner. 🙂 He had his little friends from playground celebrating this with him, I am not sure if he knows. He received a good toy from my best, had fun playing with it. Definitely made his day!
