    • RE: Alexandra Primary

      Hi, my sweet little things,

The teacher in charge of softball is Mr Ho. I like how the students get a \"workout\" so that they feel re-charged for a day of learning despite Friday being the last day of the week! 😉

It is certainly great news to hear that we are going to have a new vendor in the canteen! Do you have any idea what food will be made available? While it will be nice to have a more \"colourful\" selection of food, I am not too overly worried about the food issue.

Recently, I happened to have a chat with the vendor selling Dim Sum. Apparently, their food supplier is \"Hara Hong Kong Dim Sum\". What was interesting was that the BAOs contain wholemeal flour. Also, Tou Fu was added to the Siew Mai and brown rice was added to the Fan Choy. Hence, the texture of food seen in this website: http://thehalalfoodblog.com/hara-tim-sum-kitchen/

I sometimes wonder why the school creates a joint recess session for the Primary 1 and Primary 3 students, even though we have just 2 canteen vendors. Surely, the school is aware of the long queues that may arise. On hindsight, I think the school thinks it even more important that the students have their recess at the \"right\" timing, i.e. not too early or too late. Instead of the easy way out (which is to stagger the recess timing for every level), the school chooses to deploy teachers to help out in various ways during recess. Some help to ensure children plan ahead by reminding them to take out their money first. Some go to the stalls and help the vendors to collect the money. Teachers also help to put up the notice so that children learn how to sort utensils and cutlery.

These small acts show me how hard the school works to help our children, despite running into a little bad luck with finding of vendors. I am honestly very touched because this school cares enough to make the learning environment the best that it CAN be. :imcool:

As for the Whizmeal programme, I know the school leaders are open-minded and will make the best informed decision... :boogie:

      Hi, Yorkie,

Thanks for sharing that article on Whizmeal. It is an interesting concept and I am just learning about it!

      Hi, Boorie22,
Yes, like what other parents already shared, I also agree that most of the teachers at ALPS are really passionate in what they do. They truly care and make an effort to reach out to our children. My child is in Primary 3 this year and she has been loving school. To think that this comes from a child who is avoidant in natures speaks volumes about the school....

      Hi, mysweetlittlethings,
My girl is in Softball! She enjoyed herself last Friday. She loves the spaghetti from the Malay stall. Last Friday, spaghetti was sold out once again! :yikes: Like what you say, there are still other types of food, like Mee Goreng. But my girl is a fussy eater... So, rather than choosing Mee Goreng at the Malay stall, she would re-queue at the Snack stall for Chee Chong Fun! :slapshead:

Despite everything, there is always something good that comes out of it. 😂 Because of the double queue, she has learnt to be double quick in her decision-making and in eating her food! Ha ha ha..... :heresmyfish:

Hi, parents! I have been a member and a quiet observer for more than five years! Thought that it is time to get more active and interact with other parents.

I appreciate the help that I have been getting through these years at this forum. Hopefully, I can contribute something to help other parents too!

Have a great year ahead, everyone!

    • RE: Lorna Whiston Pre School

Hi, our family is not very rich too and we send our child to Lorna Whiston at Alexandra. 🙂 I do not send her for enrichment programmes. I only try to spend quality time to be with her everyday.

I have met different parents and teachers at the school. There are some parents who can be snobbish, but not all are like that. The children are too young to understand all of this, I think.

I took the school bus to school, along with my child, during the recent Sentosa excursion trip. I do think the children are very well-behaved - playful, chatty, engaging and funny. I do not see them as spoilt brats.

Personally, I do not let this get to me. I always believe that it is loving kindness that distinguishes a great person. No one is to be judged by the amount of monetary possessions that he or she owns.

So far, I really love the school. It may not be perfect. But seeing how much my child loves going to school makes my day. She started off being very nervous and frightened but now, a year later, she is a happy and confident girl.

      🙂

      Hi, patlee,

Yes, I received a year-end memo informing the parents of the teachers who will be leaving the school by the end of the year.

      Hi, onionchief,

Nice to meet you here. I agree with you wholeheartedly on your list of pros and concerns. My girl has been getting the flu virus throughout the past few months and it is heart-breaking. It is a little puzzling because my girl has been very healthy (touch wood) since birth. Even after joining the school for a good period of 6 months, she doesn’t get very sick at all. But recently, the bout of flu virus keeps coming back to attack her (I think a slightly different variant each time).

I really like the arrangement of the child bringing home a book to read every week. I just had a notice from the school that they are going to increase the frequency to 3 times a week! Personally, I believe that the love for books must be instilled since young. Afterall, we all gain our knowledge primarily through books and reading.

For me, phonics is good to know but not as important. I know many parents will disagree with me on this point. But hey, I am a tradionalist. I didn’t grow up knowing phonics and I can speak and write well.

When I see the various school initiatives, I think they are all very good. But I also try to imagine the kind of work and effort that the teachers need to put in to get the initiatives going (on top of all the normal school work load) and I shudder. The teachers must be really busy. I do salute these very teachers who hang on and stay to teach purely because of passion.

      Hi, happydaddy,

Hmm… For me, my first and foremost criterion in the selection of a school for my child is the quality of the teachers.

I believe a good teacher makes a world of difference in education… You can tell when a teacher teaches from heart versus one who merely executes.

And children are very sensitive. They, too, know when a teacher truly puts in an effort to reach out to them.

For me, my wish is very simple. I only want my child to enjoy the process of learning. To be honest, I have visited a number of schools and didn’t see dedicated teachers in all the schools.

      Hi,

My girl is currently at Lorna Whiston (Alexandra). She has been in school for more than half a year.

My personal experience with the school has been overwhelmingly positive. I love the teachers and the principal. The teachers are truly caring (especially my girl’s chinese teacher) and the principal is strict but warm and very knowledgeable and experienced.

My girl enjoys school very much. I admit that she has always been a difficult child but the school teachers have been very patient with her. Now, my girl loves her teachers!

Even the taking of school bus has been a good learning experience for her. Uncle Lee has been so friendly and accomodative (he is positiviely one of the friendliest school bus uncles around!) Her friends in the bus make it a point to welcome my girl. There is even a school-mate in the bus who will hold my girl’s hand and comfort her when my girl first attended school.

All in all, I love the school. Except for the fees, there is really nothing much I can complain about.
