Hi Kiasu_pig

I'm keen to find out more abt DSA basketball. My boy will be DSA exercise in 2023, P5 this year. What are there differences between the 2 DSA intakes you experienced? Covid year there is no NSG , so were the criteria very different?

Also my boy is skilled and trains intensively with basketball academy, but he is average height cuz havent hit growth spurt yet. Was height a big factor for your boys' successful DSA via basketball?

We have shortlisted: Catholic High, Maris Stella High, Anglican High, maybe ACS (Barker)

Thanks for sharing!!!
My apology for not responding earlier. Has been busy lately. I have received a few messages from parents who are interested in DSA for basketball. The enquires are similar. I would like to share with all of upcoming webinars conducted by SGBasketball on 17 & 19 Jan 2022. Coach Victor Tan is most qualified to clarify all enquires. 😀

DS2 was accepted into his 1st choice secondary school via DSA (basketball). Following the footsteps of his brother (DS1) in 2019 also thru DSA (basketball). Sibling rivalry, DS2 refused to go to the same secondary school as DS1. I’m glad still that both schools are great schools both academically and in sports. And are basketball powerhouse.

If not for DSA and relying on their mediocre academic results alone, it would be impossible to get into their choice schools. For DSA route via sports, 1-1 coaching and strength conditioning sessions to have that extra edge is critical. During the year of DSA itself, both my boys went thru intensive 1-1 coaching to brush up their skills, speed, stamina and sighting. Glad that their effort paid off.

Let me know if anyone needs advice on DSA (basketball) for pre-covid (based on 2019) and covid year (based on 2021). 😅

1. St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School
2. Singapore Chinese Girls’ School
3. St. Margaret’s Secondary School
4. Tanjong Katong Girls’ School

These are 'mid-tier' schools because the girls who have passed grade 8 or got a diploma in piano will be aiming for RI/RGS/HCI/NYGH, so she will most likely not stand out.
I hope this helps.

Jiayou to everybody trying DSA! :rahrah:
SCGS and SMSS are mid tier? 😂🤷🏼‍♂️ Just genuinely surprised.
The 'big 4' is the 'top tier' thus the other schools are 'mid tier', to be honest nothing surprising about it...no offence
No, no offence, really. Thanks for sharing. My perception of TOP tier has always been schools with cut off points 250 and above eg RI, RGS, CHS, NJC, SJ, MGS, Dunman, etc. Granted SMSS may not be in this range, but surely SCGS is? Anyway, just saying.

Hi zac's mum,

Badminton starts at a relatively young age too, usually at 6-7. In fact, both table-tennis and badminton are I think the only sports in SSP that runs on the School within a School concept, precisely because the skills must be already there by the time they are at that age.

In fact, for some coaches, unless one has mastered the techniques by 14 years old, it is pointless to start these sports. Of course one can still play well, but just not at the World Stage.
Erm, what do u mean by School within a School concept?

Cos as far as I know, SSP has specific and separate Academies for each sport (not only the 2 sports u mentioned).
Badminton and Table Tennis, and I think Swimming and track-&-fields training are conducted within the SSS compounds. Whereas other sports excellence like Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Taekwondo, Tchoukball etc, the students would have to travel out of school compounds to individual Academies of Excellence to train.

Bad times ahead, will get worse... Govt has been supporting huge chunk of wages last 2 mths, moving ahead more companies will cut. Hope a vaccine can be found very soon...
Just pondering aloud, but why Govt wanna pay for all the expenses associated with accommodation for migrant workers and returning travellers? They could have made it mandatory for these people be quarantined at their own (or employer / dorm) expenses? Many countries, I read so far malaysia and India, are doing so for certain vulnerable groups. Dun get me wrong, I dun advocate for either way, thought I do have a personal preference but is just curious genuinely .

And also, I wonder that if the scientists can get a vaccine for Covid19 out within such a short period of time, why can’t they do so for the many illnesses caused by virus now? Like common flu, dengue and HIV ?

That’s good news! Will be be using it for Music DSA?
Unluckily, my DS who obtained his result is only in P3. My DD is the one who needs DSA next year... but both her practical and theory exam are cancelled... as well as SYF. Seems I have no choice but to let her focus on PSLE :(
It’s ok. For Music, I believe it’s quite easy to see the child’s standard via submitting video recordings to support the application. Don’t need to rely heavily on paper certs.

Eg. School don’t need to see a Grade 8 cert to know whether a video performers is roughly Grade 8 standard or not.
Take my comments with tablespoon of salt though.

Last year I came across a few schools stating DSA music that applicants need to submit proper credentials. Have a friend whom DD wasn’t able to particular although she could play well but have skipped the ASRAM examinations for whatsoever reasons. Thus, it probably important for aspiring DSA music kids to diligently take the music exams progressively than to skip certain levels. Afterall, formal assessment at every stage is not just a paper collection exercise but a formal Validation of a person capability.

Quickly go and pump full tank before any petrol hike!

since now US oil price went below $0,
can pump free petrol at petrol kiosk ?

When oil price go below a threshold price, suppliers wun be selling. That further spiral the price down to negative figure. But that doesn’t means transactions are made. Just a figure. During this time, price of petroleum products such as gasoline may still go up due to inflation. Any cost components along Supply chain from crude oil to petroleum products may just go up depending on supply and demand of goods and services.

Hi fellow parents, anyone knows if it is a must to be in the school's football cca to dsa under football? Will participation in external football academy and tournaments be considered?

Some schools will publish the application criteria on their websites. If u are interested in a school, you can call the school up to make enquiry directly. I provided some links below which I came across while doing my research for my boy’s DSA for Basketball in 2019. But it would apply for Football or any other sports as well. Hope the links still work.

Example1. Maris Stella High School
https://marisstellahigh.moe.edu.sg/admission/secondary/direct-school-admission-dsa
“ Key player of the School Team who achieved Top 8 placing at National Inter-Primary School Competition(s)”

Example2. Dunman Secondary School
https://dunmansec.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u194/pdf/dsa19/DSA%20Rubric_Basketball.pdf
Example3. Ngee Ann Secondary School
https://ngeeannsec.moe.edu.sg/links-for-parents/direct-school-admission
Assessment based on actual DSA trials. Evaluation using rubric.

Example4. ACS (Barker Road)
https://www.acsbr.moe.edu.sg/school-information/admissions/direct-school-admission-dsa
Basketball Tryouts and Assessment on the following:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
1. Dribbling through obstacles\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
2. Three point shootouts\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
3. Accuracy of free-throws\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
4.Time taken for 'suicide-runs'- Basketball shuttle runs (in sec)
5. Game Intelligence / Game Play
