Following is what my DD share about her experience:
–
Hello! I’m a Secondary 4 student studying in NYGH this year (2017) and I’m happy to share with you my experience in NYGH as well as my school’s culture.
Seeing all the Chinese characters along the corridors and on the school building definitely hints that Nanyang has a strong Chinese culture. Many students are fluent in Mandarin and all are required to take Higher Chinese, however, this does not mean Nanyang girls converse entirely in Mandarin on a day to day basis.
When I was a primary 6 student participating in the DSA process, I got slightly turned off by the overwhelming Chinese culture. Throughout the school, one would see Chinese characters on the walls, along the corridors and in the canteen. After a while I got used to it, and realised that the ‘overwhelming Chinese culture’ isn’t as scary as one would have thought it will be…
Another aspect of the Chinese culture in Nanyang will most likely be the use of Chinese for assembly every Wednesdays. Students recite the pledge in Mandarin and listen to announcements in Chinese. This may seem quite foreign at first, but after quite a few years in Nanyang, I appreciated the effort the school puts in to ensure we get to practice our Chinese more often other than the Chinese lessons.
These 2 are just some examples of the strong Chinese culture, but there’s still so many more, such as the consistent Chinese book recomendations every month to encourage students to read more Chinese books.
Regarding your concern about your daughter taking normal chinese, I believe that this isn’t such a big issue. I have a friend, who like your daughter, took normal Chinese in primary school. She was quite nervous about the transition but adapted quickly. So the solution is just to work harder and practice more, nothing comes without hardwork. Furthermore, if she does need help, the Chinese teachers are extremely willing to have one on one consultations. All it takes is just a request. So, with hardwork and enthusiasm to improve, I’m sure your daughter will do just fine!
About the teachers, they are really really really very nice and approachable. They will schedule consultations and remedials for certain students that may be falling behind. Even if you’re not one of those students, you can always take initiative and request for a consultation. Generally, lessons conducted by are fast. We can’t blame them because they have such a short time to cover so many topics. There is no such thing as spoon feeding in Nanyang, you will have to take ownbership of your own studies, but the teachers will always be there to help you if you ask.
I am just one student among the many in my school, so my story may not be the same as the others. However, my experience in Nanyang has been a great one, and my friends definitely played an enormous role in it. I came into NYGH through Sports DSA, and my results weren’t the best as compared to the rest. So I was pretty surprised that hardly anyone asked me about my PSLE results and if they did, they causally brought the topic up then brushed it aside saying that my result was “not bad”. No one really talked about it, not that I know of. Maybe because I was in the class where quite a number of DSA students were in.
Nanyang girls are very competitive and hardworking, so if you’re not dilligent and focused, you’ll probably fall behind the pack. Despite the competitiveness, students do help each other with school work, CCAs and many other things. My experience in school wasn’t one filled with selfish individuals but rather many who are kind and willing to teach each other and to improve together.
As for what’s required for Sports DSA, I’m not exactly super sure, expecially since GAT is removed and it’s been like 4 years since I DSA-ed. However, being outstanding in the field you’re going for and having a good record of results in primary school will probably be of your advantage.

RE: Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]
To my knowledge, the apps or projects that take up most space is for videos (iMovies?), follow by Photos and maybe music files.
My girl’s iMovie files size is about 9Gb (about 4-5 projects).
One way is to keep check on the file size of the iMovie projects and move it out after submission. -
RE: Nanyang Girls' High School [*IP]
When will the school email the final result to the parents? :?:
Last year, there is a system from NYGH that shows the status.
That will be the right place to check.
From memory, results should be out by mid-August and by end-August NYGH will be giving out the official Letter of Offer. -

IIRC, it was an hour.Hi parents,
If you still remember
-
anyone still remember the format of DSA GAT test? How many questions were there and what was the duration of the test? Thank you!
My kid did not prepare for the GAT test at all last year.
It was a 'either you know or you don't know'.
Having said that, in my opinion, the schools can easily set a half hour paper, and I don't think it will affect the results that much. After all, as my kid said, it is either you know or you don't know. Nothing much that we can really prepare or do much about it.
Anyway, the open house is just around the corner. Visit the school(s) and you will get the answers. -
RE: URA barge into my house and demand me to let them take pic
1. Always ask for identification. Even if they are Police Officers, you have the right to ask for identification.
2. Just because they claim to be from some government agency does not mean that one has to open the door; especially if you don’t feel safe about doing so.
3. They can always schedule another appointment if there is a real need to do so. What can be so important that the work must be completed when your parents (key decision makers) are not around?
Be safe. Be alert. -

RE: riot in Little India
Banning alcohol does not solve the problems.
These folks are cooked up in cramped living conditions away from their homelands.
Alcohol is probably one of the affordable ways for them to forget the issues they faced or to deal with homesick.
If govt. do ban alcohol at Little India, is that not an act of blatant race discrimination? -

RE: Edusave Scholarship Award
Fresco:
Has anyone received the letter from MOE for the Edusave Scholarship Award granted to the top performing 10% of the school cohort per level for both primary and secondary students? There is no income bracket for such award.
..
This is out as well. -
RE: PSLE 2013 - Results Discussion
zbear:
MOE (or SEAB) can make various adjustments. This year, NO school has hit 280 n above? I am shocked. The top scorer for the past few years has always been above 280.
Even the top schools like Nanyang didn't get above 280.
Is PSLE super easy this year?
Perhaps this is a deliberate attempt. Just speculating.
