    • RE: Singapore universities historical IGP/RP by courses

      @Imp75
For NUS, I thk what it means is that the candidate is most probably being interviewed at other juncture during her uni application, not necessarily for the NUS scholarship she applied for. The panel will refer to those other historical details (earlier interviews) already in their system before he or she is deemed suitable n therefore award him or her for a scholarship, such as NUS Globsl Merit or Merit scholarship.

My elder dd scored 90rp last year, has some decent but not too spectacular portfolio. She was interviewed for her NUS college application n Law application. She applied both Global merit n Merit scholarship and was awarded NUS merit scholarship without further interview…

On the other hand, her friend at NTU has 88.75rp,
minimal potfolio. She did not apply for any scholarship in NTU but they approached her directly for USP - Uni Scholar Programme interview and awarded her with USP scholarship.

I understand also that these uni scholarships may not be awarded just for thoss 90rp, etc…it all deps on what course they hv applied for as 1st choice. Eg if he or she is applying for med, law or den, where there are just too many 90rp-ers, then it’s not easy to land one, notwithstanding their portfolio.

Similarly, my dd’s hostel mate at NUSC has 88.75rp but she has been awarded Global Merit scholarship. It all has all to do with your 1st choice in your application.

      Hope this helps.

Is that the way your JC taught you how to respond to comments and objections? You would certainly fail my interview.

To answer your question. My DD was never in NYJC as she is not the mugger toad type. Howerver she was a President Award Girl guide and also a PSC scholar
I thk to be fair to NYJC, for years, its name is obscure behind RI, HCI and VJC (when VJ's performace is still ahead of NYJC).

I understand that there isn't any department allocated to scholarship, let alone President or PSC scholarship but just a ESG Councillor to advise and answer questions. Even until today when I look at the briefing slides last week.

But I thk the new principal Mr Pang is making some changes. You can refer to the link below for reference. This is a good start and hopefully he can set up a scholarship department as well if the number of eligible students are on the rise.

      Kimkar,

Since your son / daughter has just completed A-Level last year (2023), still very fresh, don’t mind if u show us an example,

let's say, take PCME 4 H2 subject combination,

so as to understand better (clearer), showing your computation, under the new \"70 RP rebased\" system:-

      1) one situation, whereby your #4 H2 subject, does help to improve RP

      And

      2) in another situation, whereby your #4 H2 subject, does NOT help to improve your RP ?

      Thank you, for clarification.
From what I know, based on RP90 system, \"rebased\" computation will come in when MTL is counted as H1 score in the RP computation as total RP will be 100, so rebase to 90.

Othw, 4th H2 will be auto-drop to H1 if the grade is the weakest.

U may want tk refer to the link below for more clarification if it helps.
      https://www.sgunistats.com/calculator

So it seems like the RP70 or RP90 works on the same basis. Weaskest 4th H2 or H1 or MTL if taken now, will be rebase if it Improves the RP score.

I thought under the new system, H1 subject is only included if it improves your UAS. Same goes for MTL if you take it.
      70 = 3H2 + 1GP

So, does taking the 4H2 still makes sense or should just focus on the 3H2 subjects? What are the benefit of taking the 4th H2, looks better on application to Uni? I genuinely want to know what's the reason to take 4H2s even for existing 90RP system, when I could just take 3H2s and 1 H1 and just focus on scoring those? Sorry, newbie in this...
According to my DD1, its all about portfolio. 4H2 plus H3 if feasible will give a better edge in terms of Uni admission (if he or she is eyeing courses with more stringent entry requirements) and/or scholarship, etc...

      4H2 could just drop to 3H2 and 1 H1 if can't cope in J2.

Does anyone have the password to purchase extra uniform / pe online and deliver to house? Can't seem to find in handbook or anywhere for DS....
2 years back, the PW was found on the \"2022 JC1 orientation highlights - parents' guide\". i have tried, the old PW is no longer in use. May be u can try looking for the similar college's notice for the current year.

Let’s say we transplant the same curriculum into a lower tier JC, I do not think the the said JC will float to 3rd place (after RI and HCI). So we can’t say that the caliber of NYJC’s intake does not make a difference.

What I have heard is that NYJC teachers are good and caring. I think that makes a lot of difference.

Another reason NYJC has produced good results could be due to the previous policy (dare I say, loophole) that Arts students can do PCME/BCME. As we all know that for Arts (Humanities) subjects, marking can be very subjective. You thought you did well but the markers may think otherwise so your expected A in Econs (or GP or Literature) may become a C.

We shall see how NYJC will perform moving forward. I do not think NYJC can go back to reviving the policy as it is now on MOE’s radar and visible to the whole SG.

Someone shared in KSP before, another reason could be NYJC’s strategy is to get students to focus on 3H2 and 1H1 whereas RI/HCI/EJC/VJC etc. will push for 4H2. I would say the 3H2 focus is a good strategy for NYJC.

So I am curious to know, 3-5yrs down the road, how will the new A level marking system (RP70) affect NYJC standing when all JCs focus on doing well for 3H2s.
I don't thk the school merely focuses on 3H2 n 1H1. But i dont have ready hard number to share off hand. A number of my DD1's classmates actually takes 4H2. But if they are not doing well in one of their H2 subjects, noticeably Chem, they will be advise to drop the 4th H2 in J2.

There is a record number (in NYJC) of J2 students in the grad class of 2023 admitted for EASE, close to 24% of the corhort (i came across the list 1st hand, so no qualms on the number). These are the ones who have good prelim results (possibly other CT results, not sure ) and good portfolio to be selected for the \"green harvesting\" program for local uni's early admission. So it may be an indication of the no of students taking 4H2 and some even has a H3 subject, on top of their CCA commitment.

i also agree that delivery of the academic curriculum may be one of the main factors contributing to the yoy better results performance. Seeing how my dd and her classmates fared and improved, gained her confidence from J1 to J2. Of course, I m also applauding the students who have put in tremendous efforts in the exam. Picking up from defeats in (one of ) the most difficult CT or prelim papers and still continue to put in alot of faith in themselves and the teachers.

I understand the ex-principal Mr Low, will also do a few walk-around to offer packed dinner to the students in the school campus at night, before CT or exam period. Caring teachers and principal is one of the draw.

Below is the slide on record performance in the recent A level results briefing.

I read the reddit post. How can nyjc have stellar resuts when its median is only an estimated figure? All the other JC posted actual median RI HCI EJC VJC which was really stellar
Btw, median 86 is not an estimate. I was in the hall, it was flashed on screen by Mr Pang. 1 in 2 students scored at least 86RP and 1 in 2 has at least 3 H2 distinctions. He announced that results for the CT22xx batch are better than prior years.
