    • RE: Which Secondary school to choose in the East

I don't think a school will only use its resources on better students and neglect the rest.

what I meant is whether you want your child to be in the bottom of the heap in the high-achieving School.
do you want your child to be in a comfort zone or in a school that can challenge him?

you may want to read this article -> https://www.schoolbag.sg/story/small-fish-or-big-fish-how-we-decided-on-our-son-s-secondary-school

      Hi Sherine17,

You may want to check out these schools. Although they are mostly neighbourhood schools, they do have outstanding students in their O level results. Just that people don’t usually talk about them.

Check whether they have any Applied Learning Programme and see whether your child like any of them. Check what subjects they offer for their Sec 3 students.

Most importantly, be involve in a CCA she likes, learn stuffs which cannot be found in normal curriculum.

      Bendemeer Sec (L:188\tH: 249\tM: 207)
      Broadrick Sec (L:188\tH: 242\tM: 207)
      Manjusri Sec (L:188\tH: 235\tM: 205)
      Damai Sec (L:188\tH: 240\tM: 205)

Hi, I am not familiar with this school, but I believe in every school, there is always good and bad students. Get your child to join a CCA and be active in it. As long as they are busy with CCA, they wont have spare time to be mischievous. All my neighbours are from neighbourhood schools but none of them turn bad, although their schools have not too good reputation in the neighbourhood.

I think the booklet is not updated, hence I always visit the schools website and see what special programme they offer.

Beside Arts, you may want to consider the interest of your kid and see whether any schools has special programme in that area.

Personally I think Pasir Ris is one of the few good neighborhood schools in Tampines, especially of its strong CCAs in Performing Arts. I prefer schools that offers a balance in Academic and CCA.

I think Pasir Ris has something may be of interest to your bro -> https://pasirrissec.moe.edu.sg/holistic-education/the-co-curriculum/co-curricular-activities

Encourage your brother to be in active in CCAs as they usually cover skills not found in textbook. My nephew enjoy his 4 years in school due to the CCA he was in. He was from NT and we know his interest is not in study, hence we encourage him to do well and be active in his CCA.

BTW, for NT, he will learn CPA and DnT, and I noticed Pasir Ris Sec offer both subjects in Sec 3.

Based on the Sec 3 class timetable, the school offers Arts as a O level subject for its students

      https://yuyingsec.moe.edu.sg/useful-links/for-students/class-timetable-for-2019-2nd-semester

Do note that usually the school will only offers the subject if there is enough students sign up for it. If your kid is the only child to choose Arts as a subject in Sec 3, the school may or may not open a class for one student.

    • RE: Which Secondary school to choose in the East

There are few schools in Tampines which he is eligible to enter. If based on COP, he can choose Tampines Sec or Dunman Sec but he will be at the lowest tier as the lowest COP for the 2 schools are 130 and 129 respectively

Regardless of the schools choice, I would recommend that he joins Infocomm Club (or equivalent). My nephew picked up AV skills, IT skills and photography skills when he joined his school’s Infocomm Club previously. Even after he graduated and proceed to ITE, he also went back to help the school during Sec 1 orientation, School Speech Day.
The skills he gain also help him with his courses in ITE and Poly , where he is studying now.

There is NA for A.Maths now

      https://www.seab.gov.sg/docs/default-source/national-examinations/syllabus/nlevel/2019syllabus/4044_2019.pdf?sfvrsn=a40b90c7_2

don't know how true...teacher told class cannot take E math for NA but can take A math for NA :?

Most schools will ask the students to take NA A maths and O level E maths together.

my daughter is in NA. next year she will be in sec 2. if she does well enough to choose subject combination with E and A math, will she still be doing these subjects at NA standard?

Usually if the student does \"NA\" A maths , she will needs to do \"O\" level E Maths.

      thks emoh,

      yes, it remain at 225
I am just wondering what are the chances of getting in to NA sec if she is 3 marks short from the affiliated cute off marks

she cant get into Edgefield too as the cut off is 224, Hai Sing she went but does not really like the school
she prefer Greendale as is walking distance from my house, but the school is still pretty new (only 10 yrs), and I just moved to Punggol, not much knowledge on this school

I am thinking of putting Greendale as the first choice, based on her T-score, highly likely she will get in and then appeal for NA after that
or shld I put NA as first choice, even she is 3 marks short and Greendale as 2nd?
will she still get Greendale if she don't get NA?
I am worried abt this 😞
      )

From a relative's feedback on the 3 schools in Punggol, Edgefield students is the most stress among the 3 schools as the intake is better, hence there is a standard to maintain. Greendale has made improvements over the past years in the national exam, due to the \"harsh and strict\" male ex-principal. Under his term as the principal, the COPs have improved over the years and is getting more popular nowadays. Punggol Sec has some catching up to do and its COPs are the lowest among the 3.

My relative's son just finished his NA level in Punggol Sec and after comparing with his friends in Greendale, he finds Greendale has more programmes for the students as compared to his school. He choose Punggol Sec then as Greendale does not have the CCA that he wants. However in Punggol Sec, he is allowed to do O level subjects at the same time, which may or not may be available if he choose to go to Greendale.

You can put Ngee Ann as 1st choice and Greendale as 2nd choice. Your child score is good enough to get into Greendale if she cannot get into Ngee Ann. You can also check out schools in Sengkang.

      Regina Pak:
Does anyone has any advice for the following schools? Which one should I put as 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc? Thanks.

      - Manjusri Sec Sch
      - Bedok Green Sec sch
      - Springfield Sec Sch
      - Changkat Changi Sec Sch
I have 2 nephews that graduated from Bedok Green. In general, I found the teachers are caring and finding means to reach out to the parents for better engagement. Very often, parents are the one who shunned the teachers, as observed from the Parents-Teachers sessions.

Also, some parents cannot speak proper or don't speak English, hence you can see the mother tongues teachers are always around to help with the translation during the Parents-Teachers sessions. Frankly, I don't really expect good results from the school in the national exams, but I think Bedok Green students have proved me wrong yearly. The school does produce students will good results yearly - don't expect straights As but decent scores that allow them to progress on to the next level of study. The teachers are always there to help, but ultimately it depends on the student whether he or she wants to do well in the exam.

Also, regardless what stream you are in, the school will give you opportunities to develop your leadership in your CCAs, if you want to. One of my nephew is from NT but he was given a leadership role in his CCA. In fact, even after he graduated from the school, the teacher-in-charged still asked him to go back to help with the orientation programme, or assist in the training programmes for the juniors.

Bedok is a old mature and there are several neighbourhood schools, hence you will find \"rowdy\" students almost everywhere. You will always see students misbehave below the HDB units wearing their school uniforms. Hence I won't really bothered by the other students behaviour, but to remind my nephews be careful of who they mix with.

Hence I would suggest you do check out Bedok Green if you have the time.

IMHO, I will rank the schools as follow
      - Bedok Green Sec sch
      - Changkat Changi Sec Sch
      - Manjusri Sec Sch
      - Springfield Sec Sch
