I received some enquiries regarding the HCI DSA Infocomm interview which I would like to address here, as I had benefited much from information shared by parents in the DSA 2022 thread.

The interview this year was conducted in groups of 4 students, and consisted of 2 parts - performance tasks and questions.

Performance tasks were related to robotics, coding, machines. Not unexpected. Will not be sharing specific questions as they are unlikely to be the same every year.

Questions asked were related to self, personal experiences, and goals. Again, no point sharing exact questions as there are so many possible permutations.

Hmm I think we also got lucky cos Infocomm is still not as popular as other domains eg sports or Math. So am really thankful for the outcome.

If I were to summarise

1) supporting our child's passion and capitalising on his aptitude (eg encouraging self-exploration outside formal lessons, sending for appropriate skills training)

2) doing research to find out what our school of choice is looking out for in their DSA candidate (eg the relevant skills, competitions, projects)

3) reading up on the nuances of the DSA process itself (eg HCI requires portfolio submission so prepare one early, hearing from other parents how interviews are conducted)

4) understanding more about the school / CCA (going for the school openhouse, speaking to teachers and students at the CCA booth, scouring the school / CCA website)

5) prepping the child for the interview as it can be nerve wracking for a 12 year old but yet it can make or break the deal

Lastly but most importantly - the child must want it for himself and work together with us to support his endeavour. 100%.
Cos it determines the next 4-6 years of his life.

Sure.
Deep interest in LEGO building since kindy years.
Enrolled in robotics classes since 6 years old.
Joined school robotics CCA
- awarded CCA Member of the Year.
Represented (either club or CCA) in FLL, IDE, NRC, and WRO.
Took coding classes and did well in project showcases.
Started NOI training.
Obtained a platinum award at the Hwa Chong Infocomm Challenge 2023.
For his DSA portfolio, he self-learnt and created a personal website for submission.

Does it mean that if didn’t receive HCI rejection letter means high chance of CO or WL? Did they just send rejection to those who receive erroneous email earlier? Wonder when will they send acceptance email?

After the erroneous email this afternoon, I received another HCI just. Still same outcome - unsuccessful 😅.

As per website, 25 Aug.

I also received an erroneous rejection email from HCI but it was swiftly followed by a rectification email.


I feel the HCI DSA committee has been very well organized so far, with ample information online (even YouTube videos hosted by teachers themselves!), a standardised date for interviews, and follow up with SMS after emails all sent out. The date of issuing of CO / WL letters is also very clearly stated.

So let’s trust that they will sort out the technical glitch and notify us as planned.
