      Hi I think those who are shortlisted for sports would be told. My boy told me he was shortlisted but I did not ask him if he was told verbally or if there was a list. Same for his friend who was shortlisted for a different sport.

      Perhaps you can email the CCA teacher in charge.

      Please help with the following question:

      Hi mathsizzfun,
      Regardg yr ans to the foll questn, my kid calculated a diff way n the ans is different. Please comment on why his method is not acceptable. Is it because when d ques asks for average sp, we have to calculate based on whole dist n time taken n not assume aver sp same throughout? Thanks.

      Diff in speed-> 65/3 =21.67km/h
      Speed of car 70+21.67 = 91.67km/h.

      A car was travelling from Town P to Town Q.

      After completing 2/7 of the journey in 1/2 hour, the car passed a van travelling at a constant speed of 70km/h in the same direction.
      3 hours later, the car reached Town Q but the van was still 65 km away from Town Q.

      (a) Find the average speed of the car.

      (b) If the van left Town P at 0810, at what time would it arrive at Town Q?

      Thank you 😄

      5/7of distance PQ --> 3 x 70 + 65 = 275 km
      distance PQ --> 275/5 x 7 --> 385 km
      total time taken by car --> 3. 5 h
      average speed of car --> 385/3. 5 --> 110 km/h

      cheers.

    • RE: 2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

      Thanks to pslemum, I started tearing various pictures from various sources and gathered them into similar topics to file them. DS2 saw me doing that and wondered what in the world was I doing destroying the pages and I told him poor mum has to work hard for him..( sent off DS1 to sec 1 last year and now have to work hard all over again for son 2 this year)

      Anyway while trying to get son to read and learn each paper page to page, I realised there are many overlaps and may end up confusing a kid whose Chinese is not great. To those who are teaching your kid oral Chinese, I suggests circling unique sections of each picture. If there are 2 or more pictures with similar section eg man climbing over a divider on the road, just pick one in which describes it best in the vocab which your kid can grasp without getting exasperated. Similarly do the same for conclusions. As you practise with your kid, if you come across a picture with a similar section you have made him learn from another picture, make him express out loud in the way he had learned earlier from somewhere else to reinforce

      An advice from experience( last 2 weeks). Don't be too ambitious and anxious to cover too much. It's quality rather than quantity. For a kid he will gain confidence if he finds that,\" Hey! I am progressing!\" Presently, I am trying to squeeze in 20min each night to do this with my kid( after much haggling). With CCA three times a week and tuition, it is difficult to sqeeze in time to do own tutoring with him.

      Anyway, I have told myself not to panic, not to get anxious, not to go into Brownian motion but plan and just do what I think I should do. Always assess my kid's response. I want to push him hard enough without compromising our relationship. Quarrel, of course we do! Argue? Yah , to the point once, my hubby stood aside laughing thinking it was funny while we glared at each other hyperventilating but pepper it with some laughter
      and loving, I think we can survive 💋

    • RE: Q&A - PSLE Math

      Hi, tianzhu, tks for reminder that can use units in equal total concept.

      Soln in units method:
      Case 1 mrs Li. M:W
      3:1. (total 4 units)

      Case2 mr Li. M:W
      4:1. (total 5 units)

      Since we knw total no of people shd b d same, convert the total units to the same using LCM of 4 n 5

      So case 1 bcom. M:W
      15:5 (prev no x 5)

      Case 2. M:W
      16:4 (previous no x 4)

      Therefore no of men=16; women=5

      Hi, I thought the msg syst is the same for yr 1 to 4. It is the total grade of all subjects divided by total no of subjects examined. A1 is 75 and above, A2 70-74, B3 65-69, B4 60-64.

      Can anyone pls pm me sec 2 maths curriculum? This IP program covers topics from different levels in the 0 level text so it is difficult to follow

      Hi Lizawa, tks! I was trying to see how to use d 4 boys' info to solve the prob but was indeed baffled. Will see if school uses another method when my boy goes back to school, then share info.

      Ano prob here
      A bag has 200 blue beads and 540 yellow beads. A tin has 850 blue beads and 350 yellow beads. Some blue and yellow beads are transferred from the tin to the bag. When that is done the percentage of blue beads in the bag bcom 50% and that of blue beads in the tin bcom 70%. How many blue and yellow beads are transferred?
      Hi, worked out soln to share
      7u + 1p =1050--------(1)
      3u + 1p =890----------(2)
      4u = 160
      1u =40
      7u=280
      3u=120
      therefore, no blue beads transf =850-280=570
      no yellow beads transf = 350-120=230

    • RE: Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

      Hi, I have a kid in sec 1 and another in p5 this year so I can understand all the anxieties mentioned.

      Linden, I suggest you start by using some the recommended assessments books mentioned to reinforce the concepts. If some questions are similar, pick about 2 to let your kid try. If he gets it correct, there’s no need to do the rest and go on. If he has problem with the questions, do a few more similar ones to practice. Put a tag on these "problematic" ones so that nearer the exams, he can just go through these. Always let him go back to the previous sums which he had gotten wrong. Cover the answers and let him try again. If you are more"on", rewrite the questions changing the names and numbers so that the kid doesn’t do the sum again by memory but doing it based on his own understanding. Once he is ok with the topical sums, go on to the school papers.
