RE: Historical COP for Sec 1 Posting Exercise
Hi!
My son scored 236, is it not advisable to put Anglican High (241), Maris Stella (239) or Ngee Ann Sec (238) as 1st choice? By the way we are staying in Marine Parade area. -

Yup. The COC class covers compo, compre and oral. HCL covers vocab, compare and oral. Elite Class combines everything but also means it will be fast-paced.lhy686:
Hi iMeme, is your child taking HCL in school? Mine is taking CL. Hence the staff said my child not suitable for the Elite class. She then added on to say that Elite class is more suitable for students taking HCL in school and constantly scoring 85 marks and above. I think she probably meant if lower grades still can attend if u want to but will be a lot more stressful? But for my case, since my child is taking CL then definitely not suitable for Elite class coz the syllabus is based on HCL and not CL.
Yes, mine is taking HCL but is far from scoring 85 & above. :nailbite:
But its only the elite class that covers everything whereas the COC and HCL classes only concentrates on certain areas? Or am I wrong? -

Hi Ihy686, I called the centre also, they only tell me the pace is faster and ask me to sign up first. If student unable to catch up then can consider switch to COC.lhy686:
Hi iMeme, i spoke to the centre before. The lady who answered my call said that they will only recommend this class for this higher chinese students who constantly score 85 marks and above else they might find it stressful and hard to catch up. :yikes:
btw, what is the \"common\" score for higher Chinese? my DC told me many of her friends who took HCL either just pass or even fail. Is scoring low (50-60) common in higher Chinese?
could it be that they mean for students taking HCL, and scoring 85 & above for CL? -

@ lhy686. Hope the approach help your child.
:rahrah: Congratulate him everytime he made perfect score even if it’s 3 听写 only. Do some home-made red-Bean ice sticks to share with him when he was in school so u can reward him for his achievements. Sth he likes. If he didn’t get all right help him rmbr the strokes by relating to the meaning of the word or it’s origin (words associated with drinks 口,ppl or or grps 亻,heart/feelings 忄, etc. Then tell him I’m sure you can do it once u ustand.
Doing up Flashcards helps a lot too if u can get him to match Flashcards instead of 听写 during the CNY weekend or after CA1 & June/Dev sch holidays. Just type them out on pieces of paper (if u prefer u can paste on card paper) - 口, 亻, 忄, 木,氵,艹,目 etc & those words (he’s learning in P5 or proverbs/idioms.
艹 蒙 梦 檬 矇
目 眼 演 燕 險
蒙住双眼
The other thing I forgot to share was driving learning using hardcopy dictionary rather than electronic dicky. Since lower secondary, I wld get my kids to use dictionary to look for words they do not know how to read when doing comprehension (理解问答). Don’t just feed them the answer coz you may hv helped him learn to read the passage at hand, but when the child becomes over-dependent on you for the answer, he’ll be handicapped during exams as mummy will not be sitting next to him in the PSLE exams hall. This train them to reinforce the Chinese strokes & it’s relation to the subj matter. I only handed the electronic dicky to my kids 6 mths before Prelim in P6 year as it’ll certainly help with 作文.
I must admit this strategy works better if u start at lower sec with yr child as there’ll be less pressure & you can train yr child to adjust his habit early at lower Pri years. It’s tough initially, but over time, yr child will rmbr the dicky as his best frd & be an independent learner. Be firm owise it’ll never take off. Mine will try all tricks initially - like I can’t find the word, can’t find the strokes, etc. I’d playfully pick up the dicky & day I’m looking at the word & challenge my kids to find it themselves. They’ll try to wrangle the page u’re Holding but I’ll quickly close it fast enuf.
Hope my latest sharing helps.
@Estéema, your approach sounds fun! haha! will try that with my boy. Thank you so much! :rahrah: -

Thank you, annalee. A child getting 80-82 and still find it stressful...annalee:
Hi, any parent's DC is attending HCL Elite at Bishan branch, can give some feedback on the 3 hr class?
I know of a friend whose son is in HCL Elite 3 hour class, her feedback is he improved after joining that class. The quality of materials is v good, teacher also can hold the class attention for 3 hours. But she did say her DS std was already not bad so he could really improve after joining. She had another friend whose son was getting around 80-82 and he found the class rather stressful.

There are so many veteran mums here who are very skillful & plan well to adjust learning for their kids to succeed w/o tears.lhy686:
lhy686, if your child attends the P5N+CC5 class, then the CC5 class itself is more or less the same except it doesn't covers the textbook based. The material on the weekly basis is the same. But do bear in mind that if you separate the textbook based tuition (be it at HCL or Wang or any other tuition centre) plus another tuition class for compo, the child will have to study twice the amount of tingxie hor.
Laughingcat, Thanks! Haha! currently my boy already complaining the list for P5N+CC5 is way too long! esp when it comes to revision time..He saw the list for HCL and said its more manageable for the textbook based portion. I guess i might need to let him try. Hopefully it works better for him.
I was thinking if u can work ard his issue but discuss with him yr rationale.
May I suggest the following:-
1. Explore with 汪 Admin if they can put yr child to the regular 3-hr class but skip the 作文to a diff session. We did classes at Kings’ Arcade, and 杨老师 was very helpful to split my child’s classes for a short 2-mth period due to clashes of his sch Math Olympaid Training when in P5. So, try discuss alternative arrangement. Owise call 汪老师 or her husband at the Eastgate HQ.
2. IMO most kids who gained the discipline to learn the 听写 list, which follows the MOE Textbook list, wld be able to comprehend & follow the lessons to the Ts. In fact, the greatest part that our kids benefit from it when they’re faced with class 听写 test, they’ll usually ace it & most gain confidence & self-esteem fr improves performance.
After each 汪 lesson, as parents, we might want to help them keep up with prep for next class by getting yr child to learn 3 of the total 10 or 12 听写 or 默写 list. The next day learn ano 2 or if u find yr child more able to handle ano 3, go ahead get him to learn ano 3, but test 6 (3 fr the previous day list). In that way, you’re helping yr child cover weekly work thro piece-meal & small step effort. Yr child will not find it overwhelming.
Once your child is steady with his 听写, u’re helping him to thrive better when he sits in class learning fr the teachers & not feel lost.
I know someone bashed me up with “why do I hv to spend time going thro work when I’ve paid to tuition Centre to help my child so he can do better in sch?”. I guess it depends on how much we’re concern enuf to know how our child is coping besides learning in sch or tuition Centre. S’times, u may catch situations not doing of the class teachers or tutors. S’times our kids don’t gel with the class, no chemistry with the tutor or there might be a disruptive kid in class that distracts.
As parents, when we help our child learn, most enjoy the bonding. Make it fun, let them look fwd to enjoy a break with you (their favorite seaweed, nuts or yogurt, etc) after they learn. I truly hope our Spore kids will learn to enjoy learning the Chinese language w/o tears. We’re blessing our kids with good attitude of learning.
Btw, after we had done the 2-mth split classes, my child was so glad to switch back to the regular class bcoz the weekday slot had a child with serious attention issue & the teacher cld not handle him & lessons were always disruptive. So, it’s impt to explore other causes that might hinder our kid’s learning & provide constructive feedback to the Centre Admin.
Hope abv sharing helps.
Hi Estéema, many thanks! I will go check with 汪 Admin if it is possible. This will be much better for my boy. Will prob start the piecemeal tingxie with him also..hopefully it helps :thankyou: -

@lhy. HCL Education compo class would be toooo slow-paced for a child used to WLC.

Ooh! thanks! How about HCL's textbook class as compared to WLC? -
RE: Wang Learning Centre 汪老師 - Discussion
sky minecrafter:
@lhy. Hello. As many of our forummers have shared, LC..., imo WLC has 1 of the best writing programs (breadth of enrichment topics). I'd recommend CC5@WLC, where explanation of the writing process is better paced (than 3hr class), then signing up for a separate textbook class (on a need to basis, WLC or anywhere else would be similar). LC is a hardworking parent & tends to worry about 听写。I'd say, do what Estéema does, iirc, put the 听写 lists onto flashcards or learn them in chunks, it's manageable.
Hi sky minecrafter, thanks! I think i'll go ahead and let him change to CC5 class. Ya he will still need to attend the textbook class coz his vocal is really.... :slapshead:
