• RE: Cedar Girls' VS TJC

xheyx:
Thx maisy! I'll try to persuade my mother. However, I find that Cedar is a little far from my home in Marine Parade. Is it still worth going to?

Cedar isn't that FAR from Marine Parade.

Actually I am an old girl and I do remember many of my friends staying in East Coast/ Marine Parade/ Opera Estate area. Bearing in mind we didn't have IP then so you can be assured all the girls went to the premises at Cedar Avenue and not VJC site. And they did much better than me in Olevels (i stay near Cedar hahaha). So yes someone says it depends on how driven you are and I totally agree.
Most Cedarians (99%) whom I know of have no regrets going to the school. The environment is competitive enough to ensure one stays focused and driven; yet it is at the same time not overly competitive to the point of being painful. Most of my friends and I still hold very fond memories of the school. Having said that, it can be stressful at times too. The school has very high expectations of their girls and hence there's a constant push for good grades. I guess it's the same with almost every good schools you can find in Singapore.

but clearly, the choice is yours. If at any point you feel you cannot cope w the stress in Cedar, then it's probably not the school for you. I heard these days school hours are very much longer (compared to my time), so it is very important that you must enjoy going to the school you love.

These are both good schools. Really depends on what you like. If you like Cedar, go for it. You will be the one spending the most time in school so it’s very important to go to a school that YOU like (not what your mom likes so long as it is a good enough school that is).
If you are worry, you can join the parent volunteer group to be involved in the school activities. You will be able to monitor for the first 2-3 years and at the same time your child will be able to develop more confidence having you participate in school activities.

Thanks for the advice, Balletmom and MomDana. Appreciate it!

I wrote about my concerns I had last year regarding the school....my son is now in P1 in the school and so far he's adapting well..

Being a boys' school, they can be playful but so far I see encouraging signs...adequate disciplinary action fr form teacher to inculcate good class behaviour like not talking or playing with stationery during class, active parents support group and activities, enthusiastic mummies (& daddies) forming informal chat group to keep lookout for each other's boys....

hope this sharing helps.
Glad that your son is enjoying St Stephen's. Actually I was a bit surprised to read about the \"bullying\" cases... my son is currently in the school and is amongst the smallest, skinniest boys you can find in the school (ie the \"most susceptible to bullying if i can say... BUT I have not heard of anyone \"bullying him\" (nor he bullying anyone) (\"keeping my fingers' crossed\") and he seems to be enjoying his school a lot ! I have no problems waking him up for school everyday as he looks forward to school daily.

IF I must point out any concern I have w.r.t the school, then it would be whether the school is \"academically driven\". Don't get me wrong. I have no issues with the school regarding academics yet... just that if I MUST point out a concern now, then it would have to be whether the school positions itself well amongst all other primary schools in Singapore. I remembered the Principal stressing a lot on \"holistic development\", about nurturing character and morals over pure academic excellence during the orientation we attended 2 years ago ... whilst I agree with him, I hope a balance can be struck between character-building and academic excellence. Although my son is coping well in the school now ... and in theory I should not have any concern now.. I guess I just do not want to receive any \"last minute heart attacking news\" later on in his primary school years. I guess no parent wants that either. Hahaha. :xedfingers:

Dear All

I started my son on badminton recently (about 2 weeks back). We bought him a junior racquet upon coach's recommendation.

At that time, Sportslink had an offer buy 2 at the price of $29.90 but my son only needed 1 so I had no choice but to buy both haha.

My son is currently using only 1 racquet ...the other one remains BRAND NEW W PRICE TAG (HANDLE STILL IN PLASTIC WRAPPING) and COMES W ORIGINAL YONEX COVER.
MODEL : YONEX JUNIOR MUSCLE POWER 2 LIGHTWEIGHT
21\" STEEL SHAFT
Kindly refer to attached picture 🙂

Willing to let go at cost .... ie $14.95 ( will settle for S$14 ).

Kindly PM if interested. Thank you 🙂

Hi, my son p4 @intermediate level recently started hourly 1to1 & 2 hrly group trainings with ex-national players Hendri Saputra & Hendra Wijaya (brothers). We play at either kembangan CC (near my pl) or SPore Badminton Hall @Aljunied.

Considering their reputation as ex-national players, their rates of $60 an hr for 1to1 & $110/mth for 2hrly weekly sessions, are really very good value. And for group sessions, no more than 5 students per coach!

My girl p1 just started badminton, this year, and I'm looking for anyone else interested to form a group training with Hendri. Just 3 more players as Hendri is willing to start a class with just 4 players. Sundays 2-4pm tentatively, @SBH.

Anyone interested?
My son is P1 and I am keen but he is total beginner and your son is already at intermediate so I think not a good fit huh 😞
Since your son plays at SBH ... and you mentioned at kembangan too? Would you know if there is a good coach for P1 boy beginner level at kembangan (it is near my house) Thanks!

Thx! Do you know if there is a PV program in St Stephen's?

From what I know, there is no parent volunteer program in St Stephen's if you are referring to one that will put you under Phase 2B.

The school however has a parent volunteer program for parents whose kids are currently studying in the school.

This is correct. St Stephen's has no parent volunteer program.

It has a very strong Parent Support Scheme (parents of existing students) though.. where parentsof current students volunteer their services (some daily as traffic warden; others weekly)... and during carnivals and sports day and other celebrations ... I'm surprised to see so many \"parent-supporters\" ...

I'm not sure if it is because of this strong support given by parents of existing students that St Stephen's does not need the parent volunteer scheme. But, kudos to these parents for dedicating their time & effort.

Parents of st Stephen,

(From p2 to p6)

Is it true that there is rampant bully going on, in the school?
If yes, why isn't the principal of st Stephen doing something, to salvage the situation, but to let it continue, as it is ? Is he \"bo chap\" ?
As leader of the school, if the rumor is true, surely he has to do something, to help the school, right?

But if rumor is false- then should stop it.

This is from my DS who is in SSS -P4. When someone gets bullied and reported to form teacher, the form teacher will call his parents followed by reprimanding from teachers and VP. I do not think that the school teachers are \"Bo chap\" but there is really so much the teachers can do. The real discipline must still come from the parents of the bully.

I agree. My son is in the school. Earlier this year, he was playing on the monkey bar and was pushed down by a bigger boy... all the boys straightaway ran to the canteen to report to the teacher even though my boy wasn't hurt. The bigger boy was reprimanded but he apologized and said it was not intentional. And how did I even know about this ? Teacher actually called me up to inform me.. and my son was not even hurt! So, I do not think it is fair to say the teachers or Principal bochap over 1 or few incidents. There are more than a thousand children in the school (P1 - P6), accidents / incidents bound to happen in any school.... and yes there might be occasions where incidents slipped through the watchful eye of the educators and hence went unreported. But I believe this happens in every school.

\"Bullying\" exist everywhere. My nephew in Ngee Ann Pri was ever punched in the face by another boy - all bruised and needed to go doctor's. Both sides' parents were called in to resolve the matter. Yet another incident happened where he was pushed from behind during recess in the school canteen (ngee ann) and he slammed right into a pillar in school... he went to hospital to get stitches done. Of course we were upset but we wouldn't call it \"bullying\" or say \"bullying is rampant\" or say things like \"teachers bo chap\" in that school .... we attribute it to kids' rough play more so than \"bullying\" and teach our kids to be more careful and vigilant when they play/ argue, how to avoid getting themselves hurt etc....

Dear all

Anyone has a kid sized TKD uniform to give away?

My 7yo-going-on-8yo boy wants to learn TKD. I think I will just sign him up at nearby CC (have not done so but will do so soon). I was thinking if anyone whose kid has stopped TKD and willing to give away your child’s TKD uniform (along with the white belt). I don’t mind the condition. Honestly , I’m just trying my luck here. I am unsure how long will my son sustain his interest … that’s why I decided to ask for hand-me-down just in case he wants to quit after 6 months hahahaha

So, any kind soul out there who is willing to give away, kindly PM me… Many Thanks !

AgDearie:
Well, I also have no idea why this forum for STSS is not so popular.

Maybe the parents themselves already chatting a lot in school while waiting for their DS - :hi5:
I realised those recycle bags that you collected from Natas Fair,
and the bags from Charles and Keith (for handbags) are the right size for school files and art blocks. Since my DSs in P1, they will keep a spare recycle bag under their table, I mark them using Markers. Should they need a bag to bring their folders/files or extra worksheets home, they
can use their spare recycle bags instead of loading all in their school bags.

The schools are aware of the heavy school bags for many years, but if the DS does not pack their school bags according to time table, there is nothing the school can do. For the past 2 years, I know the form teachers will collect all the workbook and the Subject Files within the first 2 weeks when the new Term starts. The only text book for P1 and 2, will be Chinese, Maths and Social Study + exercise books and diary. Music and CME and all the rest of workbooks are kept in school, so your
DS should not have heavy school bags.

In the past, when there was PE, sometime they need to change back to School uniform. Good thing that since late last year, they have changed the practice.

I hope these information will be useful to you.
Hi AgDearie
Thanks so much for the detailed insight!

Can i ask what is CME ?
Does it mean that during PE days now, the boys can wear PE attire to school and for the entire day?
Also, since you are so helpful , can i ask if it is necessary to buy SSS school socks or can just wear normal white socks ?
Last question (hahaha) .. On thursdays, are parents/ caregivers allowed to deliver lunch to school for the kids ? I don't really fancy the idea of my son eating canteen food for lunch (i mean once a day is fine eg during recess time but to have canteen food twice a day ..hmmm ... i guess i have this concern coz my son was born premature & has the build of a 4 yr old! 😞 so i believe in proper nutrition - i intend to give him homecooked lunch for P1 only - thereafter i think i will let him be as I also want him to experience a \"normal school life\" hahaha) - you think the school will allow that ?

I have this idea also because when i was in primary school, there was this classmate of mine who was very skinny (but she wasn't small like my son, she was just skinny). My school actually allowed the mother to bring formula milk from home + home cooked food for recess everyday for 2 years (for P1 & P2) for this girl. P3 onwards the girl was \"on her own\" and she grew up really nicely - i caught up with her before i got married. Still slim but much taller than me muahahahaha. Hence, I hope to be able to do the same for my son (not for recess, just lunch on thursdays only) - wonder if the Principal will allow such request 😛
