You have also have to add that it is the only Sec/JC/IP where students have gone thru at least 4 years of Computer science courses (if they don’t major with Computer Science as Honours/ or major) who include coding, web technology, data visualisation, AI etc.
You won’t find that in RI or HCI or any other JC/IP. IT is the most complete Maths and Science curriculum in SG -

Well, NUSH students also do triple science that include Biology at Honours level which is H3. Chemistry is the only requirement for Medicine in SG. Others like Cambridge also includes Physics. So it is no surprise that NUSH student has better chance for Medicine at Yong Loo Lin (NUS) and LKC-ICL (NTU) because some of theses student Advanced research project is in medicine.
Thanks macflashpay!
It seems strange for graduates of a Math & Science school to go for medicine instead of engineering... but different strokes for different folks
I'm happy for them.
Maybe we should have a School of Medicine in Singapore?
Yes, based upon the small cohort size so far ( 129 ( batch in 2016) to between 170 - 220 (all other batches)) , about 5% to 10% of student went to do medicine in SG/oversea.
With the research & innovative spirit of Explore, Experiment and Excel nurturing and ingrained early in this NUSH cohort, a more appropriate questions might be - how many per batch actually went on to pursue their PhD studies in the field of maths and science ?
In fact, NUSH did achieve its objective in nurturing future scientist as it is the high school (JC) in SG which has the highest no of PhD per student population since its inception in 2005.
Well, I know from batch 2011 onward that that there at least a few (3-5) per batch . you need to check with the alumni office (if they are releasing) for details. For example 2011 (4 out of 2xx), 2013 (4 out of 2xx), 2014 (3 out of 2000 ), 2015 (4 out of 190), 2016 ( 7 out of 129), 2017 (3 out of 160) etc. -
RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
Hi Hi ,
I just came back to Kiasuparent NUSH to "look look see see" after a long hiatus ( after all my DC have also graduated in 2015).
I think the NUSH of today is far more competitive (student quality-wise n selection) , more broad-based and comprehensive in STEM curriculum (additional cores in Computing, Engineering, Astro Physics etc) and offers the "best in class" in STEM learning, application and research for any high school/JC in Singapore and indeed/around the world.
Although NUSH is only a mere short 16 years in STEM history, its reputation/branding as premier STEM school is already established in all top US, UK and European Universities. As the VP Academic Mr Goh have said "our alumni have done very very very well and outshine their peers" in and around the world. In 2012 a UK team actually came to NUSH to examine the NUSH curriculum.
Our oversea alumni (Undergrad /Graduate PhD students) are still growing and well represented in diverse US top Uni (MIT, Stanford, CalTech, Havard, Princeton, UC Berkley, John Hopkins, Yale, Columbia etc) and UK Uni (Oxford,Cambridge, Imperial college, UCL etc ) .
Even among Local Uni (NUS/NTU), our NUSH alumni have always done exceptional well getting first class and top grade and our ex-NUSH are favorite project buddies. I think the school motto of "Explore, Experience and Excel" is the key difference to STEM training and excellence.
With no First-round testing / 2nd round Camp selection as in previous years, the onus is really for the school selection committee to select the best and proven, and with the passion (STEM-hungry) to explore, experience and Excel.
I think it is far easier for our top PSLE DC to get into RI or HCI to do STEM but only 170 of from this same 1000 Ri/HCI chosen cohort will get a rare place in NUSH.
So parents, if your DC is STEM-hungry and got a place in NUSH, don’t deny your DC a rare opportunity to pursue their dream. Your DC’s STEM skill experience/training in RI/HCI cannot be at the same level - opportunity, flexibility, intensity and exposure as in NUSH.

Are electives counted in CAP point? Does anyone know why certain subjects are under electives list and some under elective/enrichment list? Any difference between both?
My DC graduated last year (2016). I'm not too sure if the policy remains.
Any special Electives taken (eg Foreign Lang, Japanese ) if done well eg A grade can be added to CAP computation in the junior (Y1/2) and (Y3/4) else they can be simply ignored (if they don't help to raise CAP. Enrichment has not CAP computation.
A key policy during my DC year is MT can be included or excluded in NUSH Graduation CAP (either way - which ever bring up the highest CAP possible), so any DC poor in MT are not at a disadvantage in final NUSH CAP computation.
Hope that help.
My DS just got confirmation to go NUS High. Any of your kids go NUS High and regretted ? How many % stress level higher than taking A Level?
NUSH - results accumulated from year 3 to 6 tests, exams etc.
\"A\" levels; results depend on how well you in one sitting in Nov /Dec at year 6 or JC2.
What do you think ? All based on one sitting or over 4 years ?
My DS has accepted to go NUSH. He went for science & maths olympiad previously. He went for DSA in june but didnt clear round 1. He got in via SIE after psle hence we were not sure if he can really survive there. But i encourage him to go as i see good value in learning computing studies as compared to A Level and best part is he likes maths, science and computing.
Interesting dilemma .. Given his good PSLE results (to get tgrough SIE) with interest in Maths, Science and computing .. just wonder why your DS did'nt make it even in round 1.
However, since he has been accepted via SIE ( like he is given a 2nd chance to prove himself )..he is god blessed to do well. -

Does that mean year 1 and year 2 results are not taken into account to compute whether you have high distinction, distinction or merit for the nush diploma?
Thanks.
Yes, the Foundation year (Y1/Y2) CAP are not computed or included in the graduation CAP which only kick starts from Y3 onward (4 years). This is also to cater to a group of students (about 70 ) who will join NUSH at Y3. This include local as well as ASEAN scholars, students from Vietnam and China etc.
The last graduating batch to include the Y1 - Y6 CAPs as graduation was the graduating Class of 2014.

The selection criteria are very stringent. If your DS does not have what it takes to go through the rigour of the 6 years course, he would not have been selected. So trust the school and your kid as well.

:congrats: Class of 2017 .. 10th batch Convocation tomorrow 17 Nov 2017 .. after 6 years of hard works ..toils ..Hello parents!
I am a student (or soon to be graduated!!!) at NUS High, and am looking to sell off my textbooks at a lower price (since I no longer need them, oops).
Titles include:
Singapore Mathematical Olympiads (Singapore Mathematical Society) 2008 to 2012
Glencoe Physics Principle & Problems (McGraw Hill). IIRC this was used in Y1-2.
College Physics by Young, 9th Edition (Pearson) -- inclusive of 1 unused online access code. IIRC this text was used in Y3-4, but things may have changed.
Campbell Biology 9th Edition (Pearson)
Biology Matters (Marshall Cavendish). This was our reference text in our lower years.
AP Biology 2016 (McGraw Hill)
AP Chemistry 2016 (McGraw Hill)
All About Geography Upper Secondary: Human Geog (Pearson)
All About Geography Upper Secondary: Physical Geog (Pearson)
Reading Tropical Maps 6th Edition (Pearson)
Drop me a message if you are interested!
One of the best graduating cohort in terms of no of Gold medalist in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Informatics in International Olympiads..
:congrats:
