Hmm…but if the metal piece is directly above the flame, wouldn’t it be too hot for it to touch? Then how does it serve its purpose as a handle? Do u mean it’s an open lantern? From some of the kids’ drawings, it seems to be a closed lantern. And it’s possible for the top part of the paper lantern to be burnt due to its close proximity to the flame.

I think the candle sits on a cardboard base and not touching any metal directly. Also, the metal piece is used as a handle. If it is in direct contact with the heat source, it would be too hot to touch isn’t it? -
