      jtoh:
No requirement to report so present any way that makes the stats look good. ๐Ÿ˜„ For eg., Almost 2 in 5 students scored A. So is that 39% or 35%? ๐Ÿ˜„

And look at this fr HCI website:

      - Many subjects have done well in terms of the number of distinctions obtained:
More than 8 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Mathematics
Close to 8 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Biology
More than 7 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Physics
More than 6 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Chemistry
Close to 6 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Economics
More than 7 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 History and Art
Close to 7 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Literature in English
More than 6 out of 10 students scored distinctions in H2 Knowledge and Inquiry
      :rotflmao:
Close to, More than, Close to, More than ...
Can be more consistent or not??
'More than 5' does not sound as nice as 'Close to 6'??
Sorry to say, the above reporting is clearly playing with numbers.

      SALLYSARA:
Dunman High School did well too..

1 boy has 9 distinations (no announcement in the website)
      3 8 distinations
      44 7 distinations
      58 6 distinations

      46% 3 H2 distinations
      61% 4 H2 distinations

      well done DHS.
According to DHS website, 61% scored 4 distinctions and NOT 61% scored 4 H2 distinctions. There is a world of difference between them!!

      zbear:
I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there such a thing as DSA to NUS/NTU/SMU?

I hear of DSA to Sec School/JC/Poly, what abt the Us?
It is a valid question, not a stupid qn. Each uni has about 10% for discretionary admission. See below. Also, intl competitions medal winners are typically offered scholarships.

      -----------
      Discretionary Admission ยป
NUS sets aside up to 10 % of course places for consideration of exceptional candidates for admission. For such candidates, NUS will consider other factors besides academic grades. The following are some samples of exceptional achievements that we may take into consideration:
      1. Medal winner at International Olympiads (Biology, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics)
      2. Winner in National Science & Talent Search competitions
      3. Represented Singapore in Arts and/or Sports
      4. Active participation in community service and volunteer programmes
      5. Work experience relevant to the course applied for (supporting document/s is/are required)
      6. Key leadership positions in community organisations, sports and athletic clubs, etc (outside school)

      wonder mom:
Anybody please help me with the following details about NUSH:

      1. Wat will be the approximate the school ending time for yr 1 and yr2? The first day ends at 5 PM and second day at 9 PM. Will this be continuing everyday?

      2. I can see that almost the whole day is spent in the school. Don't the children feel tired while coming home? Do they have time to do other activities? Do they atleast have time to do their H.W's/assignments/ projects?

3.Will there be school on saturdays? If so, are they supposed to be early on sat's also?
      Thanks.
Timetable is out. You can check your daughter's class timetable.
Note Saturdays are usually for math olympiad electives (need dept approval)

      KiasiMama:
I freaked out looking at the Bio, phy textbooks... talked to few seniors and they mentioned there is no students required to go for enrichment classes to cope with their studies. Is that true? You wld be the best mom to answer as you already have 2 children in there. Tks in adv.

Actually, the textbooks are more for reference. If your child can follow the teacher's lessons in class, the lesson notes are generally sufficient. My children hardly read the textbooks. In fact, I regretted buying the Y1-2 Physics textbook as my child has not used it at all.

I think few students go for math and science enrichment classes. Probably it is more common for students to go for Chinese tuition. Some may have gone for accelerated Science enrichment classes (eg Y1-3 students going for 'A' levels) as they want to prepare for junior science Olympiads (SJPhO/SJChO). But it is really not necessary as the school has very good in-house math, physics, chemistry and informatics Olympiad training for junior students (bio Olympiad training will come in later for senior students). My children have no tuition/external enrichment classes, not even for language subjects which they are weakest at. Instead, I keep in close contact with the language teachers and am generally happy with what they are doing to help my children cope with their weak areas.

    • RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)

I have 2 kids from NUSH, one has recently graduated this year and the other going Y3 next year. Like any other school, NUSH has its merits and shortcomings. With greater emphasis on math and science, some other things may inevitably have to take a back seat. We just have to manage our expectations correctly. For instance, I would not expect the standard/curriculum of languages and humanities subjects to be as rigorous as some other top schools e.g. RI. That is fine with me. I would say, the teaching standard of non-Math&Science subjects in NUSH is generally comparable with most mainstream schools, and for Math&Science subjects, exceeds even the top schools.

What I like most about the NUSH system is, there is no national exams like โ€˜Oโ€™/โ€˜Aโ€™ levels (other than mother tongue) and IB, and yet the NUSH diploma is recognized by local unis and many reputable overseas unis. A lot of time is saved not having to mug (i.e. do plenty of past years practice papers) for such national exams. Those with kids who have just gone thru PSLE would appreciate how much time was "wasted" in drilling for a national exam. My elder daughter had spent most part of her JC2 preparing for โ€˜Aโ€™ levels. Instead, all 6 years in NUSH are spent doing fruitful and exciting stuff. Also, from what I observe, most kids in NUSH are happy (well, my kids are, definitely), as they are learning mostly what they have passion for. So, for students who have true passion for math and science, I think this school would suit them well.

There is no interview for NUSH Sec 1 DSA. Interviews may be scheduled for very special case e.g. award of NUSH scholarship.
