I thought eligibility of 4 A level subject depends on o level results?
My staff dd in Nyjc , score 7 pts ( raw) taking 4 A - comp, math, phy , Econ - all H2 - shecsaid if can’t cope , sch will tell them to drop Econ’s to H1
It shd b common across the board regarding the eligibility for 4H2 base on o lvl results. (The reason is more or less implied).

On a side note, the part on dropping econs to H1 might be for her case indv (prob base on her past overall results in the blocks). And fyi its an advisory fm the college, its up to us whtr to drop or not.

Coz if one's econs grades isn't too far off, there is really no point dropping fm H2 econs to H1 econs on the current syllabus after learning H2 for the past 1 yr+ (majority of the syllabus has been covered by den). While H1 had less topics (minus off Mkt failure those stuffs, which are actually losses as those are the chapters that complete the picture), the requirement for the standard of the answers are not really compromised.

comparing the number of % of student getting distinction, I must say I am expecting better results from NY because if I am not wrong, NY is not any better than EJC considering the disparity in their admission COP and RVHS too. Of course, we cant have fair comparison until we have the full detail available from everyone.

IP JCs like EJC as well as RVHS students need to cope with 4H2 content subjects, while majority of NYJC students are taking 3H2 & 1H1?

The fact is, majority of NYJCians still takes 4H2 subjects every cohort. It would b mere and biased to simply assume 3H21H1 is a norm in NY. On default, there r at most 4 full H1 CT groups per level, and the number of students that dropped any H2 by the Prelims does not surpass 40. (We know it ourselves when we sat in the hall)

Thus, @UBKmom just like what Hong heng pointed out, NY works the same way like any other JCs such as EJC, HCI or RV. Its the choice of the students to take 3H21H1 or 4H2. No school set the rule that its compulsory to take 4H2. There is no point in trying to stretch the difference by adding the assumed illusion that most NYJCians take 3H21H1 and therefore less workload. (I wondered how parents like yrself on that side of the hse got this off-track thinking from.)

Plus i don't really get the deal of comparing percentages differing by one or two, or even down to decimals when it tallies with not even close to a dozen by the cohort size. So does comparing median RPs.

All these JCs that yall mentioned here are all decent ones with similar good results if yall realised. I must say honestly, at the end of the day, the contemplation between JC that bears similar results doesn't matter if the attitude of a candidate isn't having a right attitude and can't take ownership on his or her studies.

Hi, I need some advice here. Can a student do H1, H2 and H3 Maths at the same time? What is the main difference between the 3 types of Math?

I heard of recent changes to the A levels H2 Maths about have 30%+ unseen questions. Can anyone explain what do you mean by unseen questions?
Hmm. I guess that 30%+ unseen questions shd be refering to application qns bah. I guess the reason that the usage of \"unseen\" just imply that those questions are not the textbook type when it just bluntly require one to solve part by part (those \"solve equation xxxx, hence show that yyyyyyy\"). In the question, they may relate to real life scenarios but actually linking back to what is in the syllabus.

Hi just wanted to hear more of your insights on this.. So did yourself experience any culture shock when u first entered NCHS? Was it hard to adapt esp for those who did not have any Chinese background?

I do, since I came from a catholic primary school (I was from CHIJ-OLGC) and did't speak much standard Mandarin at home before that, but it was temporary for me. In all it was quite a balance and wasn't excessively \"Chinese\" at all like what many people thought an SAP sch would be, at least in NCHS...

TBH I rmb it was quite awkward for me on the first morning assembly, esp having different practices from a catholic school (tho this more or less would occur since catholic school itself is different...), and hearing seniors conversing in Mandarin at times. At first I was totally overwhelmed, but at least the feeling wasn't that bad for the first few lessons, I actually felt comfortable from the interactions with my classmates. Eventually I took up the confidence to open up and start conversing in Mandarin (I just told myself dat I wasn't alone, anyway, since definitely there are also people like me, and everyone first intro-ed to each other in English to begin with. Plus at least I know can still strike up a complete conversation in Mandarin). My peers and CCA-mates are quite friendly and got me involved just like any other person, anyway they don't actually mind me conversing in English hahaha.

Eventually it just became natural for me. The main hurdle is really just the confidence to open up and not isolating yourself. 😉

Hi hi, Can I check , keen to send my son to NC high next year. How is the sch culture and teachers in the sch as I am new to Sengkang .

      Thanks :thankyou:
Hi! I was an alumnus of NCHS (I graduated in 2015) so probably my experiences might help. 😄

I would say that I am quite blessed to study at NCHS for its caring environment, with teachers that knows what we all need and peers (be it in class or CCA) that support each other, especially at year 3 and 4. My graduating class was quite a nice place to be for me last time, from the fun and synergy we shared (we are just like close friends who never cease to kapoh and help out one another every time XD). My tchers (while demanding...) are very willing to go an extra mile to make sure we understand the stuff, even if it is out of the requirement for O lvls (its actually A lvl stuff so it kind of helped us a lot in JC). The tchers knew us just like his/her friends, so we don't really felt the distance between us and the teachers despite the age gap. Still remember my chem tcher who taught us all the while using his own lesson materials, and giving us extra lessons just to make sure we understand the concepts fully and not merely memorising blindly. (he nvr believed in teaching answers, but instead the concept and skills behind the qn).

I kind of enjoyed similar relations in CCA. All of us knew each other so well that we know what each other thought every time we work together. Our seniors (even those who are already in army or uni) were always very supportive on what we do, and still come back quite frequently to coach us on our skills (and academic work sometimes). I myself was specifically tutored by my 学姐 during my graduating year. (She kind of continued to help this blur girl in JC sometimes, coz we were in the same CCA again in NY  ). And of course we shared notes and extra knowledge around. So I guess prob this kind of environment made the habit of helping out others a second nature to us. I still maintain my contact with my juniors, and go back every year to help my juniors out during Night Study period.

While the culture may seem \"Chinese\" (which many feels it as a culture shock initially), it wasn't a big issue after all since it eventually helped us to master both English and Chinese proficiently (I actually felt fortunate haha), and really created part of a distinct identity among us, along with all the stuffs that linked with the way of life we had for the 4 yrs in NCHS. After all it isn't hard to identify someone correctly as an NCHS alumnus just by the feel and the (distinctly frank while meticulous) way he/she do stuff hahaha. 😉

Perhaps u might want to look out for the sch's open house. While it might not give the full picture of a sch's culture in such a short visit (since it is something that's settled deep within), it may at least help ur son to have a feel of the sch and help in his decision making.

Yeap its similar to how the application to uni works. Just apply and go for all the trials that u want to go for. If ur sis is successful the school will just put the offer into the MOE system for her as one of the choices (along with other schools that offered her a placing). At the end of the day when the offer phrase comes simply accept one out of all those offers u ve received fm them.

Don't worry about whether it will clash since is school-based selection instead of ministry based selection. If suaysuay on the same day den will hav to give and take le. 😄

      Hi there,

Anyone staying at Sengkang ? My DS has been posted to Nan Hua and it will be a 30+ drive each way. It will be nice if someone can share one of the legs driving to or from the school. Thanks.
哇!好勇敢! Dat will really mean driving him every day to sch? Will be really hard to take train or bus to sch on time fm west to east...And somewhat agree with Tokidoki, 南侨 is nearer and their standards also very high (try do their papers u will noe, like 南华 thr papers also quite siao de #difficult).

Anw do keep a lookout to make sure boiboi can cope as will be a tiring 4 yrs (if really there is an issue must act bef sec 3 coz dat is the best time where u can start a course afresh if u nid to change to another SAP sch, in worse case scenario). The main aim is to get him to a good JC (very very impt, esp for PW and stuff), or his dream path aft O Lvl. ATB for him! 加油! 😄

JC life is actually very personalised, depending on what u want urself to be.

U can choose to be very committed and be very busy with stuff or very slack and be a quiet one (if getting a good result is ur only priority, and is not thinking of taking a bond and go for scholarships). But if u like to have fun and like the tense feeling den feel free to join more CCAs and activities (can also try to score well in JC1 MYE and go for Galileo stuff). Will open up ur social circle and really make urself learn more in terms of lifeskills etc.

At the end of the day, unless ur results really CMI, that cert isnt really the only thing the society picks at. So IMO just open up and discover. Two years is really short. 🙂

      Hi!

Any information about NYJC's Robotics and ODAC? Like what they do and also like to hear on whether it will be demanding for the balance in the CCA and sch work.:)
ODAC uh \"爬山涉水\" would b a good description haha. They do rock-climbing, trekking, kayaking (all those outdoor sports u can think of bah), See them training running around the College quite often. They are nice and cheerful ppl.

Robotics heard is quite strong. Dey do programming and also coding if not wrong. They got a very nicely furnished room with air-con (idk when they got one), and they are very perfectionist. Remember they got a lot of honourrollers and they also got a strong relay team (they were 2nd or 3rd in 400m inter-CCA relay last yr). My batch their CCA leaders also the last to step down, even later than council. Basically we always say they were der Hwa Chong ppl in the wrong sch :rotflmao: 气质都像到完.

Will be quite smooth sailing if u r the kind who is very detailed and always on the move.

How is the school time like?

Wat time does lesson starts and ends?
I guess the most accurate answer would be \"dependent on (1) CT (i.e. the class) and (2) subject combi\". All JCs have a very high timetable mobility, just like uni. (Tho heard Hwa Chong's timetable is more regular, and their day ends earlier. Not mentioning their semester end earlier than most JCs. :censored: )

Below is an example of the timetable for a CT for the last semester. I picked a random one from my friend's CT, their class was a mixed physics class of CLEP, History, Chem, ELL & English Lit ppl. (the timetable for each day is read from left to right). U will realise dat there is no specific definition for start or end time. The only constant is a morning assembly slot (8.30am-9.00am) which may OR may not have assembly (have a look at the different days and u will see the pattern).

Most CCA trainings are on Weds, except a few CCAs like Choir... (can't remember)
      https://s14.postimg.org/qimpyouxd/example.png\">

I can't guarantee it will b the same for next yr NYJCians coz the College seems to b changing the timetabling algorithm, along with some other changes (I m not sure as we were all busy taking A lvls and did't really go back for the past mth 😕 )
