Congrats on your son's achievements! I think SMU's double degrees is a good option... I've always been impressed by SMU students' ability to speak professionally.
Thanks ChiefKiasu! Been a long time since we last communicated as we have become less kiasu as our kids grow up 😄 Inspired by your comments in another thread on \"Run for your life\" literally.

Yes I agree with you on the observations for SMU students. My dd is also in SMU and in her 2nd year now. She actively seeks out for different internship, CCA opportunities, case competitions to prepare her for corporate life. So I would say the 4 years program (less packed) and also the culture does encourage them to be more vocal and seek our different learnings.

I also have quite a number of SMU graduates in my team and yes they do stand out. From the business/ accountancy subjects perspective, NTU and SMU are now the biggest supplier for graduates but the thinking behind the SMU accountancy graduates differs from NTU. NTU graduates will more likely join the big 4 while the SMU graduates probably look for other opportunities such as consulting, corporate, etc... No good and bad as both are equally good and decent. Just that mindset is different and there is nothing wrong as we embrace diversity of views.

Yes the understanding is correct, you can only have 1 acceptance at the end of the day. You cannot hold on the 3 other offers. For those in NS, they can choose to apply again in the following years.

To illustrate, my ds has offers from NUS business (accountancy), NTU double degree and SMU double degree. The moment he accepts SMU in the system, the offers from NUS and NTU will no longer hold.

I heard from him that in the event that he wants to change his course in SMU, he cannot reapply. Instead he has to write in to provide justification for change of course and this is subjected to approval.

A lot of more serious ailments masks itself in common symptoms. Similar issue with Dad.

He experienced some chest discomfort that is like gastric or heartburn. He went to the doctors a few times and each time they sent him home with antacids and told him indigestion and heartburn cos due to age the lower esophageal sphincter has weakened so gastric juices are flowing into his esophagus causing his symptoms. I guess because Dad did not have other major issues like the 三高, the doctors did not think to investigate further. After a couple of months of this, my dad knowing heartburn symptoms could be heart issues went to the doctor and insisted on a full work up. At that point the doctor was still advising him no need for that and it will be costly. Dad told the doc that he is a pensioner so cost is covered.

Well, good thing Dad insisted. The work up showed that Dad's arteries were all over 75% blocked and the heart shows signs of mild heart attacks. He basically had a ticking timebomb in his chest. He was immediately referred to the heart specialist and a stent op was arranged and done. He was put on heart medications and blood thinners. All these were emergency stop gap measures while they scheduled him for further checks and tests for bypass.

Imagine if Dad had not gotten pushy with the doctors, he may not be around today. We could have lost over 10yrs with my Dad, countless memories and he may not have been around to see his 2 youngest grandchildren.
Actually the heartburn, indigestion issues can really mask the real underlying issues. My sil always had indigestion issues and the GP would send her with those medication to fix it. So it was kind of late when she discovered she had stage 3b ovarian cancer. She left us last year at the age of 52.

While we need to plan for retirement, I also learnt that sometimes we should not over plan. We need to be responsible with our finances and yes planning is required. However, more importantly, we should live in the moment as we never know how much time we have.

I used to worry if I still have 7-8 years more of job security as I am hoping to retire at 55. But after this, I probably worry less. I told dh that i think we are blessed with property investment. The worst case scenario is to sell one of them. He also came to a conclusion that what you spent on is what truly belongs to you. Otherwise it will probably be sitting in the bank and yes.... most likely it will go to the kids instead. Seeing my FIL (late 80s) with dementia, everyday is like passing time since the quality of life is no longer there. While he is financially sound, he don't get to enjoy what he built.

So yes folks.... live in the moment!

      Hi all,

Can someone please recommend a good one to one h2 chemistry tutor? thank you.
Sorry for the late response. Both my kids went to aspire hub at parkway parade. They were given lots of worksheets and also individual coaching. Both scored A in chemistry for A Levels.

My son didn't sit for A math for O levels - dreamy mode during Sec 4 and didn't sit for the A math paper eventually during O levels. But he eventually did H2 math for A levels after passing the H2 math admission test set by his JC. He went on to attain A for H2 math during A levels which according to the HOD was exceptional or \"historic\". We put him to learners lodge for H2 math tuition at the start of JC as we know he will have huge catch up to do.

Hi everyone, done advices or contents needed.
My daughter was offered DSA based on her performance art both to crescent girls and ChungCheng Yishun. My daughter do not know that she was offered by both schools as we have a pact that she got to know it after PSLE exam. I would be glad to have some comments or advice from anyone of you out there about Crescent Girls and Chung Cheng yishun.
      1) Chung Cheng is affilated to NYJC while no affiliation for Crescent girls. This matters only she choose to continue to JC rather than polytechnic after O level. This is something we are not sure now.
      2) although I stay in Yishun, distance is far
. But this is not a concern for me. What matter most is that my gal can learn to be a responsible girl who can take charge of her studies in secondary which I see it in both my elder sons.
      3) personally I prefer girls school and express only school, so less BGR and discipline issue.
Anyone can give me more insight of Both schools? Any comments are welcome.

      1) Definitely Crescent Girls. While I do not have specific numbers of the o level results of both schools, I am quite sure CGS gives better results than CC Yishun.

One can only use max 4 bonus points (unless going to CLEP, then you can use 6). So if going by majority of how people use the bonus points, it would be through cca and hmt. This means at CC Yishun, if you have cca, hmt, and affiliation to use, you can anyway use only 2 of them. Of course, we dont know if you will have cca and hmt, so maybe that is why some may think having the 2 points from affiliation is good to have. Well that’s not wrong, but coming from CC Yishun, erm…why not ask at NYJC, how many actually come from CC Yishun? :siam: Or ask seniors who went to CC Yishun how many make use of their affiliation points, since you stay at Yishun, assuming the pri sch is in Yishun, there should be seniors who go to CC Yishun.

      2) and 3) point to Crescent over CCYishun.

My dd was offered CO by Crescent and TKGS back then - the only 2 schools she decided to DSA for under performing arts. She is now in uni year 2. Crescent has been one of the most rewarding journey for her. It trained her in terms of future tech skills as they were into using technology and slate for learning. I recall she was conversant with powerpoint, video makings, etc... when she was in JC.

In addition, while she entered CGS with 23X cop back then, she did well for O levels and eventually choose to go to VJC (though she qualified for RJC/ HC) which she had a perfect score for A levels thus earning her the scholarship offers. I always felt that CGS value add in her journey. As she has CCA and HCL, the affiliation doesn't really matter in this case as it's a max of 4 bonus point.

I recall alot of her pri mates went to CCHM. They eventually end up in TJC iso NYJC.

    • RE: DSA 2021

Interesting to revisit this thread. I recall how anxious i felt when it was nearing shortlist and result day…Checking emails non-stop…

Also great that some parents shared perspective on DSA. It’s true and in view of recent mental health concerns, do ensure that the school you choose is sustainable for the child. There is no point trying to squeeze a child into a top school but they are just like a "mini"-ikan billis in a big sea and they will always feel that they are not good enough… it does not do wonders for their self-esteem. Similarly we’ve seen how some kids went to less known secondary school but end up doing well. Parents pls do justice for your child’s self-esteem. Going to a top school doesn’t mean anything if they don’t do well…

3 of my kids got their secondary school via DSA. More because of the anxiety of what if for their PSLE results. But I think we took the right move as their PSLE results wouldn’t have land them in their dsa school… My dc1 dsa to Crescent Girls and probably one of the best thing that happened to her. She eventually went on to do well for O levels and did perfect score for A levels and is now in uni on scholarship. Crescent did a great job training her future skills and I observed she is rather tech savvy.

My dc2 dsa to MSHS and during the secondary journey was at some point worrying that made me doubt our decisions to put him there… But thankfully did decent for O levels eventually and went to JC. Did decent for A levels and has confirmed double degree offerings from local uni.

My dc3 will be sitting for O levels this year. She is probably the most challenging but see her maturing so yes, so long as she did her best… we are open for her to choose either poly or JC route.

It is interesting that looking back… PSLE seems to be the major exams that seems the most worrying. Probably as the kids are still young to think for themselves. Post that, the kids are very much auto pilot and they just have to leave with the consequence of their effort. Or maybe mum has become less kiasu?

To put things into perspective, the "end" destination is uni. I’ve seen my nieces and nephews who went to unknown secondary schools but eventually went to a course they enjoy in poly, did well and is now in local uni. Hence there are many options these days for our kids to be successful. So long as it’s something they are passionate and excel in, they will bloom!

No offense but I wonder at the value of JC comparison. I have a child who went VJC and graduated with perfect As. Another child who just graduated from ASRJC and did 82.5.

I also had friends whose dc went to jurong pioneer and Yishun innova JC and did 88.75 so my conclusion is, it is about the Individual drive to do well. All JCs will enable our child to do well for A levels if they are driven. Just my personal opinion and hope it gives hope to others whose kids are not in “top tier” JC. It doesn’t matter…

Hi, my dd is deciding on her A level combi at the moment. She most probably choose H2 Math/Chem/Geog but was in a dilemma if she should continue her E lit or take up Econ. May I know is it good to take up Econ at A Level now cos my concern is that she can still learn Econ in U later if she decided to go into Business course. Would there be any different or will it affect her chance of selecting any course of her choice if she take either E lit or Econ?

Hope to have some advise from any parents or students here. TIA
My dd1 did H2 econs (she attempted H3 econs for a couple of months before deciding to drop out as from results pov, it doesn't value add). Now in uni year 1, she said the econs in uni only added few other topics vs A levels. So what she did in JC prep her well for it. She has a project mate who is doing econs for the first time and he struggled with the subject even the fundamentals. if your dd is open to business course, she might want to consider doing econs now than later.

      Hi,

I am keen to know if anyone has experience with this tuition centre.
My kids go there for O levels EL. Coincidentally they have the same teacher - Roy. For O levels EL results, dc1 scored B3, dc2 scored A1 and dc3 is currently in Sec 3.
