Yes iam laughing at myself also. Yes indeed that parent do share alot with us. Is mine English... Iam not angry at all juz only ....i shd read alot. Anyway lets not touch on it anymore. My main purpose is to thank those who has guide me. I know everyone has a kind intention. Thank you. So again lets focus topics on NUS High.

      HKmum:

I dont blame you for misunderstand when you thought people called you Tigermum, esp when your child is born in e year of Tiger and to someone who doesnt know who is Amy Chua! What i dont understand is Amy Chua is a person who is very strict to her children, why did 'that person' in that thread wanted to quote MumSAH something about that? Did she show people she is very strict to her DS?? Or that person is trying to ....Dont laugh at me if i made a mistake because i dont understand what 'that person' is trying to say either? Haha that the problem when your Eng is weak..i might be wrong...
By the way, MumSAH, i dont know who is Amy Chua either until i asked my hubby, i too curious, must we know her? Iam too glad that there is people like matadorepy and Innovate who always there to lead rather to tease!

I think that parent brought up tiger-mum because it happens to be a hot topic now (it keeps appearing in the newspapers recently and in this forum there is also a thread discussing it) and maybe she felt that it was apt as some parents could relate to it better. That parent is very helpful too, I have seen her giving very good advice in this forum. In fact, I think most parents here are rather helpful.

I myself can be quite ignorant too .. when someone laughed at my ignorance I would laugh with them together šŸ™‚ Really, don't read too much into what others said. Most mothers are so busy with their kids and household affairs, so it is expected that some do not keep abreast of current affairs .. I think it is okay not to know about Amy Chua or Tiger mum. And MumSAH - the way you said about rat-mum, snake-mum is quite funny and original too, so I was amused by the words but definitely not laughing at you or anything. I have gone through many years of English education here, but I am still checking the dictionary frequently, I googled a lot on English words which are unfamiliar to me, I am not ashamed of it as I learn a lot this way.

If you strongly believe in your posts, you are expected to defend vigorously. Nothing wrong with that as long as there's no personal attack/defamatory statement. So far, both of you are doing well. Parents here are mature and intelligent. No problem.

MumSAH, wish that you continue with your posting. Do not be too concern over your standard of english.

Yes, she is a very kind person. When some of them are laughing at me, she is there for me. Anyway, do not rake it up again. My DS is very lucky to be the same sch as hs son. What i admire her is that the way she stands up for NUS High, not because she wanted to brag, but she believed in ths sch.
Once again, thank you for sharing. My hubby is a legal advisor in an overseas bank and he had heard many of his business partners and friends mentioning this school and most of them (from oveaseas) wanted to send their kids to this school but very very difficult to get in. Some dont give up and wanted to try in year 3. My DD like me (i used to work in finance) liked math and science alot. Hahaha my DD did not wished to follow his dad footsteps... She is more interested in sci research. Anyway iam really glad to know you and hoped one day when my girl ever did have a chance to go in to ths well known sch, she will get to know ur kid because he is sure to be a kind person and a good leader. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year.

By PSLE in 3 years time, your DD (trust the kids adjustments) may have made significant improvement in both her languages, so not to worry till then.

Well if your DD loves Maths /Science and seriously considering pursueing these areas, NUSH is definitely the best place to enable her to stretch and nurture her love for Physics, Chemistry, Biology(Life science) and Maths.

Future researchers and scientists are the main products of this high school. But if future Lawyers and Economist/Artist/Architect can also be nurtured out of Math/Science school, then it is great. :celebrate:

Beside Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, a great scientist, inventor and artist is a named icon in the school (the Da Vinci programme)

You can attend public Open house in early April 2011 not need to wait till P5 or P6 to know more about the school. Visit the school website at http://www.highsch.nus.edu.sg

MumSah,

Glad you are back. Don't feel bad. I can't see how bad (in your language or what ??) to be shun or \"punished\" by anyone here. So don't be cowered or so get yourself \"bully\" by anyone here. One mistake or misunderstanding of word does not make you any inferior. Every one has a right to participate in discussion and in a postive manner. There are people who are good and constructive and others you know ... Cheers !!

BTW, it is my DD and not DS in NUSH. :D
Thank you. That is why i dont dared to used English that much.. Your child is lucky as his mum will never laugh at his child when he made a mistake. How would those feel when their child classmates made this laughing icon at their child or do it in action. It hurts, right?

Iam a Japanese and married to Singapore 12 yrs ago, so my English is limited and i admitted i dont read that much as i only pick up English when iam in Singapore. I do misunderstand what you people write. But isnt that very mean for those who laughed at others mistakes. Is that the way u teach your child when his classmates make a mistakes in class...or dont understand what his teachers is trying to say...

please consider the feelings of the kids who studied there!

Our kids are made of sterner stuff.
The rivalry that might exist between the students has moved on to the parents and is degenerating into a free-for-all. I cant seem to understand why.
We want the best for our kids and do what we think the best for them. So why should anyone's opinion (which we thinks is wrong) bring out this ?? :?

When DD saw this her only comment was, \" you all are too free\". šŸ˜›
Her close friends are in other schools, and there is more camaraderie between them than rivalry. And thank God for that. šŸ™

And a thought just struck me - Is this the Tiger mum in us that is rearing its head??

I 100% agreed with you! It is individual interest, no point saying all the negative things abt another school, please consider the feelings of the kids who studied there! Didnt we as a adult, should encourage them instead of keep saying all the negative things about the school.
      :celebrate:

Please quote me one negative thing I said NUSHS, other than that I do not see a track record? Did I not say that they had a brave mission, and a good strategy? Do you disagree that they, by intent or not, they have pitched (aka marketed) themselves into a real sweet spot? Mind you, they have already changed their name at least once, which shows you that certainly they are sensitive to the environment and moving with the sentiments of customers (i.e. you, the parents). How else did such an upstart so rapidly build up a strong academic core? They had no business doing it, but they have managed.

What I am skeptical about is whether all this really translates into some greater end result than the traditional IPs. Yes, they select for the absolute best in Maths and Science, and they top the Maths and Science competitions, surprise surprise! Will NUSHS develop the leaders of the future? Well? Where is the track record of that? It has not happened yet, so I say, wait and see. Have they a programme that cuts it in the long term? I say, wait and see.

That is my opinion on the matter, do I not have the right to say that in a thread that discusses relative merits of school systems? If your child has the maturity and confidence to be in such a high performing school, why should he be adversely affected by a random post in a specialised forum by a faceless stranger? Or is it you that is being affected?

      Sheesh.....

what is the benchmark to enter NUS / NTU / SMU or Oxford/Cambridge or the Ivy ?

NUS/NTU/SMU, - Depends on your course. Some are based purely on A levels/NUSHS Dip/IB results (eg Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), others have interviews/ aptitude tests. (eg Law, Medicine). Grade profiles range from BCC/B to AAA/A, depending on the subject

Oxford/Cambridge - Academic interviews (compulsory), Sec 4 Grades, Predicted grades, Aptitude tests (eg TSA, LNAT, BMAT), Teacher recommendation, Personal Statement. All offers are AAA (or higher), regardless of subject.

Ivies - Extracurriculars, essays, alumni interview (optional), grades, teacher recommendations, SAT/ACT scores

The different schools have different selection criteria and policies. Why? Because they want different types of students (To generalize: Academically suited for Singapore/UK, all rounded/ exceptional achievements for US).

If we look at NUSHS, a child who is exceptionally talented in Maths & Science and less so in languages would have a higher chance of being admitted to DSA as opposed to RGS/NYGH/RI/HCI, which look more at all-rounders (assuming you DSA through general academics). NUSHS, like SOTA and SSP, is not for everyone by virtue of their specialization. They can't cater for an Arts-inclined student like me, for example.

Because of their specialty in Maths and Science, it makes more sense to do their own admissions tests rather than rely on PSLE central posting, which is a better measurement of how all-rounded a student is academically, not necessarily his/her talent in Maths & Science. Same basis for universities, especially Singapore/ UK. Grades only tell you so much about an applicant.

Ultimately, who cares if your school is \"elite\" or not, \"big deal\" or not? I come from \"elite\" schools and that doesn't make me any better than my peers. As long as the school has a good track record of producing students who are academically sound, of good character, and is able to fulfill the child's interests, it's fine.
