After so many years and parents here are still arguing about nyjc being top or not. I realised that COP is merely a figure but once the student graduates from the JC, the next level will supercede. Thus we have to see what courses these jc graduates choose in universities. Nyjc being a heartland jc as it is (no IP student, non-GEP, lacking in olympiad brains, no superkid) and favoured by jae students who aren’t that confident, ambitious high achievers (since young) so they tend to choose more common courses such as computer science, engineering, etc just as most pupils from tjc, ajc , mjc etc will choose; unlike most pupils from elite ip jcs like ri, hci ,vjc, njc, rvhs, dhs etc whereby more pupils or majority will pursue the more prestigious courses like medicine, dentistry or law.
Above based on personal observations from friends around us.
Sadly, it’s a fact that Nyjc grads won’t get that ‘wow! you’re from top jc’ kind of compliment or recognition when they are in uni, unlike those from elite jcs with long history such as ri, hci, njc or vjc.
Stop comparing guys. Move aside. Let those nyjc genuine parents have a chance to discuss fruitfully in this thread.
P/S: It’s also not accurate to compare % of scorers with 3H2 distinctions between JCs as the range for grade A is very wide. It may be from 70 to 100! Hence rank point is not an accurate comparison because one JC may have more students with lower grade A students than another although the % of 3H2 distinctions may be higher.

Yes, NYJC is really impressive if you look back at them a few years ago, from mid-tier jc to the top 3 based on cop, just behind HCI/RI. On the contrary, NJC/TJC is deteriorating, falling behind.UBKmom:
Thank you very much, isetan
In terms of COP, Nanyang (Science) is on par with Victoria JC (Science), also 6 points. Just one point behind RI (Science), at 5. Impressive, because Nanyang is not an IP-JC
Well done, Nanyang, keep it up !
wow, really not easy to score 6 points
NYJC will never be a 3rd placing JC and never was.
They are now joint 3rd place as this year COP have change due to popularity of that JC.
Please take note that it is the school cohort A level results is the barometer that determines which JC is the best rank JC.
Yes, NYJC have done a good job marketing themselve to the public and able to draw few nett 6 & 7 pointers to the school. But if they were to be able to do that for the next few years comsecutively and go above VJC in terms of popularity COP.
Then we can acknowledge that they are 3rd rank JC in terms of COP which is also its popularity choice of the JCs among the PSLE students.
Left this forum long ago. I am amazed people are still comparing which JC is ranking above which. Haha!
Don't compare lah, since NYJC never has any IP students.
Most importantly, the pupil must be able to achieve the grades to get into his ideal course and uni from the JC, whichever it may be.
I know of an NYJC boy who went in with 5 pts net but couldn't get into NUS FASS with his A level result. He ends up taking Art Drama Media in NTU which a student with a score of 65 rp is also able to get in without appeal. The course is most popular among poly students. Not his dream course but he doesn't have many choices. -

Congrats to your colleague's DS!
My colleague's DS did well, he was one of the 282 people out of a 600+ cohort who made it on the honour roll (3H2 Distinctions + Pass in GP) for the 2017 A Level. He will be pursuing Medicine in NUS.
Well, these days, anyone who scored well can possibly be accepted into NUS/NTU medicine. My friend's child from MJC was accepted too. -

Crester, you used to mention that nyjc is great in 'value-adding'. Care to share first hand how it applies to your dc's performance?
Your DC was from nyjc? Do share his achievement and why you would recommend nyjc. -

Please attach the mentioned youtube.Greetings,
A level results day 23th, we were in college.
Cohort 2017 of Nyjc did very well- better than 2016 cohort.
Pls see NYJC U-Tube video on 2017 A level results.
Principal shared verbally in hall:
- all subjects with 99.XX % passes
- he read out many H1/H2 subjects with Distinctions above National Avg
- specially mentioned that GP Distinctions was better than yr 2016- above 42% ( National Avg is 24.4%).
- more than 4 out of 10 students got 3 H2 Distinctions with GP passes.
Do you mean what he shared verbally in the hall was recorded on the youtube? -

This student had gained an unfair advantage :yikes: and I wonder how many more had. He shouldn't publicize it in the first place. :spank:
http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/affected-students-mostly-happy-with-awarded-grades
From above article, one of the affected nyjc students stated that he had left 1/3 of the script unanswered but somehow got an A. I wonder if that incident helped to improve nyjc's chem and overall performance too? Afterall, the national exam is about how you perform on one exam and not taking one's past performances in school into consideration. Paper 3 is also by far the most challenging paper among the 4 papers. -

How about the rest of the subjects? You mentioned that you were present but why did you quote the above information as reported by another parent? They weren't officially announced to the cohort?
- H2 Chemistry 66.3%
- H2 Maths 68% , Further Maths 75% ( reported by another parent) -

RE: All About A Levels
student102124:
Well said!Firstly, selecting a JC, is already destined yourself/your kids, to anther 2 years of intense studying.. When looking for a JC, the end point is A levels, thus choosing the school with a good track record of results may help you in these short but tiring journey in JC. The recent trends of merging JCs, may complicate the selection of the right JC for you/your kids.
Personally, I was from AJC a few years back, even though I am able to get into \"better JCs\", but I did not regret my choice of it. Many may compare AJC to schools like NYJC, which have better facilities etc. Trust me, in JC, 2 years is too short and hectic to actually make full use of all facilities. Of course, environment do have some impact on the studying productivity of a student, but what really matters is the teaching and learning.
AJC to be honest is pretty run-down in some areas, but they do still provide quality education, and that is the most important of all. The teachers would actually take an extra mile to help students through consultations etc. AJC is also notorious for her incredibly tough Math papers, which helps to expose students to the toughest questions, and of course when it is A levels, they will ease through the exams.
CCAs wise, AJC do not have many niche CCAs available, and do not have the best facilities for every CCA too, but I still think that these are just small considerations you should take note when choosing your JC (at the end of the day, you will only join your CCA for 1 year, from about March in J1 to April in J2, so don't let it be the deciding factor when choosing your JC)
Opportunities in AJC to expose yourself to other things other than academics is quite decent, won't say they offer the best opportunities, but decent and plenty enough for everyone. From school-based projects like Open Houses, or Orientation Camps, to external projects like Oversea Learning Exchanges. Programmes such as the Alpha program, prepares you and build your profile and resume for future scholarships and internship opportunities.
In a nutshell, I would say that there are people who perform well in 'not-so-good' JCs, and there are people who perform badly in those 'good' JCs, it all depends on you/your kids, how well they suit the teaching and how much they work hard for the results. The 2 years for that A level cert, is just merely bridging yourself to get into your desired University courses, and get yourself a good job in the future. How fun your JC life would be, really depends on you and the friends you make, and the willingness to step out of your comfort zone. What seems to be a boring school for many, could actually give you the best memories, and it is possible to not enjoy yourself in what they called a exciting school.
There is no jc that is totally fun or totally boring. Nor is there a jc which every single student will have the same opinion about it. What we hear may not be reflective of that jc too unless one experiences it himself and his experience may differ from a fella schoolmate and both may draw different conclusions out of it. One man's meat is another man's poison.
I am sure MOE will provide adequate facilities to all the non-independent jcs and not favoring one over another. Any extra 'perks' will most probably be contributed by the jc's alumni or clan and it's something a student need not fuss over if his jc doesn't have them. He will be there for a mere 2 years and it's not his permanent abode.
What matters most is that the student has enjoyed and benefited from the program in his jc and has no regret choosing it. -

May I just conclude that 'self praise is an utter disgrace'. It's best to stop all the comparison and people will automatically look up to you. We have eyes and brains to see for ourselves.
Wow...I did not expect such a response but I merely stating the fact lah...NYJC is really TOP 4 jc in Singapore based on COP mah....I think its good to have competition so that everyone can improve and I like to see disruptor challenging the status quo to keep everyone on the toe. I remembered during my time, NYJC was really a very ulu jc and NJ/TJ is high up there but look what happen today. Is the rise of NYJC is due more to hype or substance (good A level results)? The fact that they are able to attract i guess the top 10% of JAE student is a commendable effort. They must be doing something correct/good to attract them.(I mean location does play a part but come on, they have been there for decades and a football field is really just a football field lei. But I super like EJC's field on rooftop, something different!)I believe that if you depend on good marketing/hype to attract people, time will expose your empty vessel, words/gossip travel fast.
I am not sure what is happening with NJC but to pin the reason to EJC operating at Sinai is not exactly correct. I dont know how many of CHS, SCGS and SNG top students go to NJ previously, I guess those top student will mainly go to RI, HCI or VJC taking into their secondary school location, SAP status etc and I doubt EJC is a serious competitor of NJC with their current infant stage (no offence to EJC). NJC is not new to competition, they have been surviving well sitting next to HCI and others like ACJC, ACSI, RI (previously at Sinai). I guess the main issue is with more school going the IP/IB route and more good students going poly, NJC is stuck in the middle, either here nor there, there are losing their niche or distinctions to attract good student. I mean if I am good I will go HCI or RI,if I am 5 - 12 pointers, I have alot more JCs or Poly to choose from. Will NJC goes down the road of TJC, I am not sure. Will they flourish again after EJC move back to Bishan, I doubt so. Will EJC suffer the same fate as NJC sitting beside a giant (RI), I hope not. Like I say, I like disruptor.
As for the end result (A level performance), without all JCs release their complete results and standard of measurement (UAP, nos of 3As, 4As etc, there is really no way of comparing, however, if you take the top 15/20 secondary school based on PSLE COP, do you think their O level performance (if those IP school also takes O level) will not follow their PSLE COP ranking? (may be not same ranking but still within top 20). Then, can we also make the same assumption on those JCs based on O level COP?
PS: I have nothing to do with NYJC or NJC.
A-level is a totally different ball game as JCs now comprise of pupils from both the IP and O level track with different programs and curriculum for their past 4 years. To say that the o-level performance will follow their psle cop ranking is fair. But once all pupils reach the A level stage, you can't draw a clear line in terms of performance anymore as
(1) many who can do well in o levels may not do well in A-level and
(2) there's no stats to compare results across jcs
Stating that nyjc is a top 4 jc in terms of cop is very misleading since not all IP JCs take in JAE pupils. So just stop dreaming about ranking and status.
We should just boost each other with the right spirit. SG is already a pressure cooker for students. Why add unnecessary pressure with all the speculative ranking?
