    • RE: DSA 2018

      Oh My Gosh:
      spectre6888:

i went for the RI open house. my sense is that there is no quota in terms of students that would be taken via DSA. its whether the students would (in the opinion of the school) fit. anyway, MOE had announced that the number of places in each school is increased from this year - As announced at MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in 2017, all secondary schools will be able to admit up to 20% of their non-Integrated Programme Secondary 1 intake via the DSA starting from this year’s DSA-Sec Exercise. With this increase, students will have more options and opportunities to find a match between their strengths and interests and a secondary school that offers suitable programmes. so for RI, it'd mean 20% of 400 = 80 although at the open house, they mention they'd take about 30%

2 years ago, HCI took in 50% of their intake via DSA i.e. 50% * 390 =195. If 20%, then will be a reduction instead.

The 20% DSA intake is referring to non-IP Sec 1 schools only. Previously, these non-IP sec schools DSA intake is only 10%, so it is indeed an increase
Your example of HCI is referring to IP school. In past years, IP schools (esp. the independent ones) can be taking in up to 50% of their cohort size via DSA. Seems like there is trend of this reducing, leaving more vacancies for PSLE S1 posting.

Fren tried and told me 何守乌 not working for her. Has to do with genes. She followed her mum and had lots of white hairs in her thirties. Her bro followed her dad and up till his fifties, had few white hairs. But she recommend Bee Choo, said it helps. The herbal medicine they put on your hair helps to "dye’ it to a brownish colour, and keeping her hair healthy and less falling off. Heard from her each session is $40 and takes about an hour.

I've seen some old design type of 5 room HDB having separate living and dining rooms, so can probably convert one to a studio (maybe with 1 bedroom knock down to make bigger space). But I must say it will be dependent on the design - dual key condo has been developed with that dual-key function in mind, so they optimise the space. Converting a 5-room HDB to such may end up with not optimising space and there are corners and wastage due to limitation due to design or inability to knock down some walls, etc.

Whoa... looks like it is not easy. So many limitations. I guess I will cross the bridge when I come to it. It is good that I tossed the idea here so I know what to expect if I want to do it that way.

Yep, when redesigning the unit, must take into consideration other additional things like water piping / outlet (for kitchen, for laundry), electricity sockets and lightings, windows, toilets, rubbish chute, etc.

    • RE: 16yo commit suicide after O levels result

There was nothing mentioned about O levels result in the news. Just that he is 16 years old - can be a current Sec 4 student too, though highly possible link to O levels as today is O levels result release day.

Maybe it would be good for parents to prepare kids for major national result release - assure them that there are many different paths they can take ahead, life is not about result only, whatever is the result you love them and they need to be resilient to move forward with life despite any setback…

      RIP.

      Yanchong:
      Hi all,

Need opinions on Dunman High and Victoria IP. Which school is better? I prefer a more rounded education. Would appreciate suggestions. Thanks.
Consideration of DHS and VS will be as follows:
      - distance
      - culture: DHS is a SAP school with a strong Chinese culture, compared with VS which is not SAP / Chinese culture
      - Pure IP vs dual track: DHS is pure IP whilst VS is dual track. As some people said, dual track allows for switch to O levels should IP be unsuitable for kid
      - CCA: DHS has a strong performing arts track record, so those with aptitude in this area may prefer the school. You may want to find out VS CCA niche and see which school suits your kid better in CCA area
      - cohort size: DHS has a small cohort size of 400. VS will start as boy school with cohort size of about 400, then move to VJC whereby cohort size is about 800. Come JC time, DHS actually do not take in O levels and they start JC syllabus right from Jan, compared with other JC whereby new / existing students still meet new faces and take time to settle in.
      - A levels results: both are quite comparable.

What I can share with you a little more is DHS has a very caring school culture. The teachers know the small cohort better and they are very encouraging to the kids, looking after their growth and their potential. Students are taught well on the Chinese values - to be considerate and mindful to others too. This part is just personal experience. I am sure you can also find out more of VS experience from other forummers or reading the school networking thread.

    • RE: 2017 Secondary School Selection for 2018

      rvalum:
Hi all, I need some advice.

My sister scored 246 in her psle, with merit in HCL (that gives 248 for admission to SAP schs). The two ultimate choices are RVHS and NHHS. The issue now I'm facing now is regarding first choice RVHS or NHHS (Or rather, IP or non-IP).

I am an RV alumni (graduated only a few years ago), so I would definitely like her to put RVHS first choice since she has also revealed that she wants to the JC route, and I am also quite keen on the environment/school culture/opportunities of IP schs. BUT, my sister is insistent on putting NHHS as first choice, saying that she wants to take O'levels as she like the feeling of studying for something major and getting her results.

I am now helpless so would appreciate much if anyone can give me some advice on how to accept her choice (psychological), or advising her.
As you mentioned, this is her choice. As a sibling, what you should do is to let her make her choice and support her. You can assist by evaluating the pros and cons of her choice with her objectively. Ultimately, she is the one studying in the school, so she should pick what she is comfortable with.

Different students may prefer different programme. If your sister feels like doing the O levels help her focus on major exams better and prefers that to doing A level direct in the IP programme, there is no harm in doing so. In addition, NHHS is a band 1 SAP school that will probably help her achieve a good O level results too. Not to mention to be very objective, a T-score of 246+2 may not qualify for RVHS IP as there may be an upward trend for COP this year (I think so far RVHS COP is always within the 250+/- range. I know there was a year that it was 249, but 249 only mean the last candidate to enter RVHS had a T-score of 249. It means not all 249 got to enter RVHS.)..

    • RE: Which Secondary school to choose in the East

      phtthp:
For Cca, is it difficult to get 2 points, or pupils usually get only 1 point ?

Which type of Secondary Cca \"bao jiak\", can get 2 points ?
There is no \"bao jiak\" type of CCA. The terminology is CCA, but it encompass a whole range of different areas which include , volunteering, leadership, competition etc. that earns different level grading in the different domain. Over a 4-years period, you accumulate level grading in the different area that will qualify you for the CCA points deduction of 1-2 points.

      Hi,

Is sec school affiliation to JC important ? What is the max points that we can deduct overall from O level points ?
      - 2 points can come from CCA
      - 2 points of sec school affiliation to JC
      - HMT ? If child take HMT, does it mean can deduct 2 points and may not need the affiliation to JC points ?

      Thanks.
Max of 4 points deduction, be it from HMT, CCA or affiliation. And yes, if you have CCA and HMT to deduct the 4 points, you cannot use or do not need the JC affiliation 2 points.
