    • RE: * Nanyang JC (NYJC)

Hi, I just graduated from NY so the info I can provide is quite recent (though bear in mind that it might not be 100% accurate if the school decides to change it this year)

\"Is NYJC allow students who has raw score>10 to take 4H2 sbujects?\"
As long as you bother to appeal, they will give it to you. I know a guy who gets 12 (-6 bonus) who take 4H2. But bear in mind that the school still thinks that you are not capable of 4H2, so if your end of year results are not satisfactory, you will be encouraged to drop one (but the good thing is you can choose which one to drop). If you are retained (although retain rate in NY is one of the lowest in the whole Singapore), then you have to drop (in this case you can even change your subject combination if you wish).

\" I also heard that the subject combination in NYJC is quite flexible\"
Yes. Other JC policies usually assign class beforehand, say, class S01 takes subject H2 Phy Chem Math and H1 Econs, so if you want to take that specific combination you will be in that class. NY does it another way round, you choose your own subject combination of any four subjects the school offers first, then the school will assign a class for you. The pro is you can choose virtually any combination you want (there are lots of weird combis people choose to take - but the suits them so why not). However in case you choose a unique combination chances are your class will not take the exact same subject, which means that your timetable will be a bit messy (possibly a long free period and/or a few morning lessons).

\"Can any parents or students share abt the culture n academic performance of the JC? What is the quality of the teachers n how driven are they in bonding with the students.\"
I guess the quality improves with time. If you look at the stats of COP between 2005 and 2014, you will see that NYJC is the only school that the COP goes down very quickly each year. For the past 3 years, it was 8/8, 7/8 then 7/7 for Sci/Art. Of course the academic performance is very much dependent on the students, so thats why academic performance improve every year (most recent (2014) batch did exceptionally well, with around 2/3 students getting A for maths which is conveniently the standard of top JCs). Culture I would say that it is rather warm but a bit chinese-y (I mean eventually it's nanyang). Teachers are great!!! but it varies by subject as well. NY Chemistry and Maths department teachers are very very driven and others are good as well (although honestly speaking there are exceptions - everywhere - but I think there's very few exceptions here compared to my sec sch (of course i have never been to other jcs)).

\"Can someone advise whether NYJC is good in science stream or arts stream, thanks\".
They excel in both and there's very little discrimination between the streams. Science is guaranteed by the way-above-average distinction rates and arts.. i don't really remember the rates but the fact that they offer H3 art, H3 cll and H3 econs would mean they are able to drive the students well. However, I think what is more important is whether you are good in science or atrs. There's no point going for something the school is good at but you are not good or don't like anyway.

\"Hi I hope this info is still of use to you, but I talked to the teacher at NYJC open house and he said as long as your L1 and three subjects(or four I'm not really sure) is below ten points you can take 4H2s, and the subjects must be science I think. But I'm not sure if art stream criteria will be different.\"
For science, L1B4 (B4 must contain all the sciences you intend to take at H2 level*) <=10
For arts, L1B4 (any best 4 subjects) <=10
L1 must be english (HCL cannot be used as a substitute)
      * For example, if you intend to take Phy Chem Math Econs, you must use English, Chem, Phy, Math, anything OR English, Combined Sci (P/C), Math, anything, anything.

\"- any feedback about NYJC such as
      :stress level?
      :teachers?
      :culture ?\"
Stress level - it's the \"JC\" part that makes it high and not the \"NY\" part. (in other words if you choose to come to JC don't expect anything stress-free)

    • RE: DSA 2013

      bandmate:
Is this your common test results or sec 3 EOY results? Good profile on maths but if you are applying to top tier JCs your english still has to be good enough. What is your combined humanities results?

Humans A1. The maths is overall (ca1+sa1+ca2+sa2)
      EOY i get 90 and 97.5 for E/A maths

    • DSA 2013

Just asking in advance.. which JC should I choose for DSA from my results?

      - from a neighbourhood school
      - SMO (Silver)
      - Australian Maths Competition (99% percentile : High Distinction + Prudence Award)
      - ICAS (Maths) 99% percentile : High Dist.
      - Scored 93 n 97 for Maths/Amaths overall
      - Failed Chinese (B) (not really an achievement šŸ˜‚ )
      - Taking triple science, scoring A1/A2/A2 (P/C/B)

ps. I scored B4 for my EL so I prefer taking DSA

      Thanks!
Edit : I'd written the topic wrongly.. sorry for that
