• RE: Education stress

Bedokid:
My dd is in ip programme(jc1) she is very stressed with her work and also coping with the endless project work which needs to be completed by this year. All the subjects no jokes are so contents heavy and she did not do well in the recent common tests. She seems to develop a fear for exam which she told me that she always get nervous during exam. In fact, we tried not to pressure her too much but seemed that she just cannot relax so I quite worry for her. The promo is coming, just hope she can make it..... 😄 😄

I am sorry to hear that she is feeling stressed. However, most students in JC are quite stressed as they have to juggle many balls at the same time, such as school, tuition, cca, cip, new relationships, the dreaded project work. You should talk to her to find out the problem, is it due to lack of time or not understanding what is taught and what is expected for each subject or fear of failure etc. Once you know the problem, you and her can try to find a solution. JC 1 is important as it lays the groundwork for JC 2. As for PW, if the group members are not contributing and are not supportive, please focus on the individual portion as it can help pull her grade up later. All the best! 😄

My insurance broker presented to me two.

One from Charties and one from AIA.

That one from AIA was a few times more expensive but with better cover but premium in thousands!

Yes, once you settled your insurance, pls share coz I yet to renew hers expiring early Sep.

Thanks!
Hi Insider
Not much out there. AIG (Chartis) Core PLan A 572; Marsh StudySecure 530 plan A. I am reviewing and will decide soon.
Cheers
Hi Insider
I am going for the Chartis Core PLan A. Not great but no other choice. Thanks!!!

Hi Insider

Did you get health/travel insurance for your girl? A couple of friends recommended Chartis and Marsh. Any thoughts? Thanks a bunch! 😄

Hi QMum

I bought hers from Chartis. Quite expensive for that little cover (think premium about $500+ per year. Sulking over cost vs coverage for this purchase.).

Hi Insider
Yes it seems expensive. I am looking around and will let you know once I have more information.
Cheers

Ya, service apartments don’t come cheap at all, esp if one wants it to be in central area. Think you know how to comb from tripadvisor too. Actually how many in your family are going together for the first trip (for me, only my daughter and I, 2 of us went and so easier to find accommodation)?

My elder son now is 3rd year in poly. My original plan for him is to finish his NS then head for US but about a month ago he spoke to me and told me he prefers to work straight away after NS instead of continuing study. In his line (filming), money seems quite easy in a sense that he has a classmate who is making $3000+ just by freelancing for about 3 weeks during school holidays (but will be on site hands-on ‘dirty’ job and not white shirt office one). My son’s free lance job also quite ‘lucrative’, able to make about $400 for 3 days work (and therefore, he ‘sneers’ at students like my daughter who are making $5 - 7 /hr for F&B or retail jobs). He said for his industry, hands-on experiences and network contacts are more important than certificates and so asked me don’t waste money.

Well, I am still thinking about it coz I know if he doesn’t go after NS, then he may miss this opportunity forever once he gets a girlfriend, settles down, has kids, etc (once 家累 starts, it’s another full area of responsibility that usually one cannot return to fulfill that kind of carefree overseas studies lifestyle). Never mind, still have time to ponder over this. I know what he said makes sense and so have to digest a bit. Afterall, I know he will not 饿死 whether he continues or stops his studies after NS… (son has ‘Bohemian’ character in a way - carefree, happy-lucky - this is actually also part of my character and so I can understand).

Thanks for the couchsurfing site. Will get him to study about it! (he is a frequent diver and so actually has friends from all over the world during diving trips. These international divers are usually backpackers who can house him if he visits their countries. However, as he will be visiting UK in a group of 6 and therefore, they have to find lodging. My son is that kind who can sleep on a bench kind but 3 of his friends are more ‘high class’ and cannot do so. Therefore, they have to find somewhere ‘in between’ accommodation to ‘average out’ all needs…)

It’s just great to be YOUNG!

PS:
Flametree was talking about friends saying kids may not return after studying overseas. My assessment on my two elder kids is my daughter is likely to return but my son unlikely to return (if he goes overseas). My guiding principle has always been as long as they are happy, it doesn’t make any difference whether they return or not…
Yup going to check out tripadvisor for information. Likely my daughter, husband and I.However she can stay in her hall from 29 Sep onwards.

Is he into film production? Then better to get a degree in the US. I have a friend whose husband is a film producer/director. Yes the money is goof but better to have something to fall back on. He can always teach/lecture next time.True, office jobs are fixed income jobs. Tuition is quite lucrative too. Uni students can charge between 50 to 100 bucks per hour.

My friend who retired in her early 40s to travel the world uses couchsurfing often and she said it is good. Give it a shot.

I agree as long as their happy, we are happy whether in SG or overseas.

How many more kids to go to uni?

Thanks again!
Cheers

OK, managed to fish out the name card of the taxi service that I used:

http://www.morningtoncars.com

You may also email them for a quote. (the second link provided by you - prices seem reasonable for a 50+ pounds big cab. For your first trip, cannot get the small salon cab that I booked else luggages can't get in.)

My daughter now is home doing some internship work.

She will be shifting out from her dorm for her second year. Remember the rent for her relatively big apartment - 3 bedrooms (of irregular size) is at about 540 pounds per week, incl of internet and utilities. Apartment within 5-min walking distance to school and so tend to be more expensive. Dorms usually are meant for 1st year students and kids from second year onwards most of the time prefer to stay out after one full year of eating dorm food (有福不会享 as in everyday got breakfast and dinner prepared also dont want and want to cook on own but that's the way they learn...)
Thanks! The reviews for London Transfers seems good so far. Will check around and let you know if there are others.

Wow, is she paying 540 pounds a week or is it split between 3 people? My daughter's hall is about 240 pounds a week. Ha ha I agree. Think of next year later. Lots to do now. 😄

Where did you stay whilst in London? I checked out a couple of service apartments and quite expensive? Anyone has any recommendations? Do let me know. Thanks!!

I stayed in Camden area which is quite central.

I fished that room out from backpackers.com.tw, basically it's a room in an apartment (a bit like homestay but not exactly homestay). The tenant in the room left home for holidays and so these kids quite smart to rent out the room while they were away to cover rent.

Err...you maybe more 'high class' (no offense meant) and maybe not be able to take my 'backpackers' style' (I backpacked a lot personally to China and 90% doing homestay and so quite used to it).

I paid 50 pounds / night for the two of us, complete with wifi...

Ya, anyone with more economical accommodation please recommend. My elder son and his gang plan to visit UK next year for their 'graudation trip'. (like really no cheaper alternative accommodation in London coz I did go around to look see to check prices of apartment rental but every time also would stick out my tongue...)

Ha ha you are amazing! Able to get such deals. The service apartments that I looked at were all over 250 pounds a night! :rotflmao:

Will check it out.

Is your elder son studying overseas too? How many kids do you have? For boys, how about trying couchsurfing? https://www.couchsurfing.org/
It is quite good for youth.

There are taxi services that you can pre book and pre pay too.

Hi Q Mum

Share your taxi contact leh.

I paid about 70 pounds for my first trip from Heathrow airport to city area (outside normal taxi queue). Standard London cab that can hold my 3 huge luggages.

Then when I returned, I went to a taxi booking service (happened to pass by and walked in to check out prices) and paid about 30 - 35 pounds (can't remember which cab company. Think I still have the card somewhere). A smaller cab that can take 2 pax and I returned with one big luggage. This one I didn't pre-pay. Just booked with the counter, then gave address, and cab will appear at door step at appointed time.

PS:
I told my daughter to cab to her accommodation when she returns this Sep coz of the heavy luggages which would make her difficult to bring them up and down of stairs in train station. Not sure she oredi has the cheaper taxi contact. Hopefully I can fish first and can pass to her if she later didn't manage to find...

Hi Insider

I came across the following:

http://www.justairports.com/onlinebook.htm#instant

http://london-transfers.com/

http://www.exclusiveairports.com/

I have not booked yet. I am asking around and if I have a good contact,I will let you know.

Yes, too heavy to lug the luggage around. Also, some tube stations do not have escalators....can die!!:D

Is she home already? Is she staying at the same place for next year?May i ask how many bedrooms in her apartment and what is the rent like?

Thanks!!!

• RE: How much to budget for UK 3-year degree?

Hi Flametree

If he has oredi shortlisted one or two, then easier. UCAS (the portal that is used to take in application) allows up to 5 choices and so he may have to choose more.

Once he is accepted, then he will receive step-by-step guidance (visa application, dorm application if there is any, etc).

Then just buy an air ticket, pack luggage, and go. (first arrival usually take a cab direct to accommodation coz still blur blur and with heavy luggages. Subsequent arrivals maybe can take train, etc.) Once settle down, then will be all the making more friends, learning and personal development. He will be through NS when he flies and so he should be matured enough by then.

It's not really that difficult except for the part that you may gonna miss him dearly maybe to the extent of will send him 20 kgs of Thai rice... (天下父母心 - 每粒米都代表着妈妈的思念。)

Read about 1-2 months back that now UK is the 'cheapest' place to study when compared to US and Australia...
You are always so helpful!! 😄 There are taxi services that you can pre book and pre pay too. Ha ha the report by ST was flawed coz they used the tuition fees for UK residents instead of overseas in their calculation so it looked so cheeeap!
