    • NTU vs SMU Business Degree

My daughter has received offers from both NTU and SMU for their Business degree programs, and we’re weighing the pros and cons of each. Would really appreciate any insights from current students, alumni, or parents who’ve been through a similar decision.

      Her offers are:

NTU Business – with a scholarship and she has the option to stay in the hall for the first 2 years.

SMU Business – no scholarship, but it’s much closer to home and commuting would be convenient.

Thanks mylilgirl! The whole process is stressful as you need to physically submit the paper form at each school. Each school asks for a different set of photo copies.

After my daughter was posted in Yuying, we applied for transfers at 10 other schools. CHIJ Katong Convent came back almost immediately after we submitted the application. CKC wanted us to accept their offer immediately, we had no choice but to accept the offer. CKC did not offer mother tongue (Tamil) at the school premises and the school was a bit out of the way.

Subsequently 4 of the schools offered my daughter a seat but immediately withdrew the offer once they learned we had accepted the offer at CKC. All of them were not willing to support the second transfer, despite pleading my case.

On the 3rd of January Dunman Secondary offered my daughter a seat. At first they wanted to withdraw the offer as we had already transferred to CKC, but after pleading my case, they agreed to accept my daughter. We enrolled her in Dunman Secondary on the 4th evening. Dunman offers mother tongue in the school premises and is much closer to home, despite no direct bus, the travelling time is much shorter. Relieved that two of her primary classmates are also in Dunman Secondary and they will be taking the sames buses back home.

      Hi all,

      Once again need your advice.

My daughter has been offered a place in CHIJ Katong, however there is drawback - 1) Tamil (Mother Tongue) not offered in premises – She has to travel to language centre. They called us up within an hour after we submitted the application based on her choir CCA credentials.

The school has also insisted that we have to submit the transfer form by 26 December to secure a place. Our appeal to extend the date to the 28th is still under review but may not be considered according to the lady in charge of admissions.

Three other schools that we appealed to teach Tamil (Mother Tongue) in the school premises. However they can only get back to us on the 28th.

I called up MOE, according to them multiple transfers are allowed.

      Thinking of following this approach:
      1) 26th December 2018 - Accept offer from CHIJ Katong; Request that uniforms be purchased on the 28th
      2) 28th December 2018 – If we get an offer from any of the other three schools — Transfer from CHIJ Katong to the other preferred school

      Any suggestions would be helpful.

We are in similar situation for my daughter, the COP assigned is 44 points below her T score. Just keep trying. Suggest you email MOE and follow up with a call. Wishing you all the best.

Realized that since only limited schools offer Tamil (Mother Tongue) in the school premises, there is high demand for these schools among Indian PR and Foreigners. This is one of reasons my daughter is this predicament.

My daughter is also devastated that this allocated school does not have her favorite CCA - Choir.

      Hi Everyone!

      My daughter’s T-score is 234.

      School’s she applied for:
      7019 – CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent (Cut-off guideline 232)
7028 – Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School (Cut-off guideline 232)
      7023 - CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent (Cut-off guideline 235)
      7308 - Presbyterian High School (Cut-off guideline 232)
      3013 - Tanjong Katong Girls’ School (Cut-off guideline 231)
      3030 - Temasek Secondary School (Cut-off guideline 231)

She was allocated - Yuying Secondary School (Cut-off guideline 188). Yu Ying is the lowest ranked secondary school in the whole of Singapore. Also note that Yu Ying does not offer Tamil (Mother Tongue) in the school premises.

I called MOE and they advised me to apply for a transfer to those schools with the new COP that is less than or equal to 234.

Is anyone else facing a similar issue? Any suggestions / advice is welcome. My daughter is quite upset as her classmates with lower scores ended up with much higher ranked schools.

      Thanks!

      Dear Parents,

Understand from the MOE website that Tamil is not offered at the school premises and the students need to attend classes at one of the language centres.
      Questions I have:
      1) Do we get to choose the centre or does MOE assign the centre? We would prefer one that is close to our residence.
      2) A. What are the timings? B. Is it everyday or during the weekends only.

      Thanks
