    • RE: All About Running/Jogging/Marathons/Triathlons

      Hi Karen,

      I started running in late 2010. In 2011, I did 10 races of 10km and one 21km.
I went on to do more 21km races, etc, etc. Completed an ultra marathon in Dec 2012. Target to finish a 70.3 this year.
It is definitely possible to do a full marathon within a year.
If you have never ran before, starting with 5km maybe too much. Start slow and short maybe 2-3 km and see how your body feel.
My opinion, you don’t really need a coach. What you need is a group of runners running together regularly, constantly motivating one another and sharing running form and nutrition tips, and so on. Commitment is key.
There are many friendly running groups nowadays. Most of these runners started out as unfit and for sure they welcome new runner. You can blend into them easily.
Suggest you also check out sgrunner forum for more info.
      Hope it helps.

    • RE: All About Cycling

It is a nice gesture of you thinking to buy a bike for DH.

I hope I can give some input.
First question. Do you think DH will like a road or mountain bike?
Including accessories $1.5k will get you a basic Al frame bike. Tough to find one that will \"fascinate\" DH.
There are many bike shops in Vertex. Go check it out!
Also most neighborhood bike shops do carry some decent bikes. You should find one that will meet your requirement.
I ride a Tri bike for races. Don't think DH is keen on this πŸ™‚

Mod, should this be moved to sports?

    • RE: All About Recreational Swimming

      Hi UncleLim,

      Your post caught my attention.

I have read Total Immersion and I must agree that there are indeed some good tips.

Anyway there are many books regarding swimming in the library that really worth reading up.

If you enjoy swimming and like to push a little bit without much time constraint πŸ™‚ may I recommend you to join NUS Splashdown Swimathon in Sep.

It is a yearly event organized by NUS lifeguards corp. Swim 2.5 / 5 km in under 3 hours.

I'm doing the 2.5 km swim and I think 3 hours is quite generous.

      Cheers and enjoy your swim.

      Next, CCA:

My son got into Festive Drums. How about your child?
I will respect his choice and hopefully he is happy.
Festive Drums is 2 times weekly.
I think the time committed is quite balanced out with studying time which is the priority nonetheless. OK lor πŸ™‚
Trust your child get into the CCA he/she like?

My son is in Sec 1.

He brings his mobile phone to school everyday but set to silent during schooling hours.
By the way it is the end of 2nd week now, any of you decided to sew the buttons onto the uniform yet?
Or still removing them before every wash?
I don't like the key chain ring like design...:(
Saw the ones from CCH Main, they look a wee bit different.

    • RE: School Banding determine how good the school is?

There are separate banding lists for Express and Normal that are based on last year performance.

This is an indication of how the school fared in term of their previous N or O level results.

It will be good if you can find out the banding TREND of your desired school. It could be improving, or vice versa.
But such information maybe tough to get.

So even for 4th-6th choice, try to select those with low banding.

If you have affiliation, etc, then very good for you πŸ™‚
      Sure get 1st choice mah!

Of course there are other considering factors like travelling distance, CCAs, etc, etc.

      Good luck to all.

    • RE: Can go to NA if the student is recommended Express stream?

I believe the banding of O level also say something about the school.

Some "good" schools have low banding like 5 and some "average" schools have banding of 1.

      Please consider this point.

Every child is special in their own way.
Of course we parents like to ensure the "right" path in life for them, me included.

      Good luck to all.

I hope one day I can achieve what Teacher Jerry (TJ) has accomplished. :salute:

Uncle liao, got heart, not enough power... :imdrowning:

I have signed up for 5 coming races - all 10 km.

Current weekly mileage is 25-30 km only @ 3 times/week. Will push more during next few weeks.

Will try Newton 18 km in O

      If I may comment:

Do not rush into training. Like what TJ said, take it slow and increase intensity at your own pace.

I started running in Nov 2010 and increased milage too fast trying to do SCMS 10km and got myself injured!
      My knee ligaments were inflamed!

During Dec school holidays I was limping with my family in Club Med, cannot do a damn thing except doing water aerobics...sianz.

Took me about 4 weeks to fully recover. Also spent $$$ on Physio.

Anyway to cut the long story short. Take your time and most importantly enjoy your run!

There are some 50 races per year, so you have plenty to choose from! πŸ™‚

      Cheers!
