Augmum:We didn't appeal because firstly the curriculum is the same and secondly, Dc is quite happy with the class although at first we were trying to avoid being allocated to that class which is why we chose LA enrichment.sec1dhs:I am also interested to find out about the extent of enrichment. I thought it was just a class allocation by ranking. The choice of what subject to enrich was given as an option in the streaming, but from my dk's experience it doesn't matter. We chose LA enrichment but was allocated the Maths and science enrichment class. Dk was also in the special enrichment class in year 1 and 2 but the curriculum is the same as the rest. I have my doubts on the enrichment because it may not be practical and fair to have a differentiated approach.
Did yr DC appeal for the transfer to LA enriched class ?
According to my gal ... Yup, not much a difference in curriculum...but they had to do slightly MORE for projects / assignments as compared to other classes...
As the expectation from teacher (s) was higher...

actually, only 3 classes have a mixture of students doing different combinations, from what I heard. 3M has an even split between geo and history. 3i and 3e are the two other classes but I am not sure of the mixture. Enrichment choices do not play any part in allocation to classes as far as I can see. I think the mixture in 3E and 3I is more likely that the school accommodates the students' choice and makes the best arrangement it could. Otherwise, it is purely a subject combination arrangement.
GPA 2.4 to <2.8, only can do 7 units ...skcmummy:
GPA 2.4 and above?
It means cant do triple sci ... 2 sci ( Chem is compulsory), 2 Maths, 1 humanz, LA n HCL ...skcmummy:
Depends...some classes, all doing the same combi...while some classes differ in the humanz subj (usually)...So the students doing the same combi will be grouped in the same class?
If the student takes an extra subject like AEP or MEP, you need above 3.2 to do 8 plus one. -

That's not true. There are in general 3 paths to get the content and learn. You learn on your own, you get guidance from the teacher if you happen to get a good and willing one or you pay for the guidance from a tutor. I am not discriminating against self learning, but getting good guidance is an important part of any learning process. I do not eliminate the last option if needed in order to get sufficient grounding and start learning on your own.
Students are left to \"sink\" on their own in every school every subject unless the students take an interest to ensure he/she understand the stuff and cope. Making appointments to consult teachers is a norm. Not every one goes for tuition.
Please don't expect hand holding and spoon feeding once out of PSLE -

Econs is quite a tough subject to handle. My guess is that in year 1, you are still going through the basic contents in micro. Besides, it will never be in the curriculum to teach how to tackle questions and if the teacher does it, it will be just before the A levels. My understanding is that this is the norm even in HCI and RI. Students are left to sink usually in the first year unless you get the help of the tuition agencies.
For one, my niece has just graduated from Dunman High and although some teachers have been a great help, there are some who truly have wasted her time during lessons. In the Senior High programme in Dunman High, there are often complaints of the less than average economic teachers who are unsure of the syllables that would teach you in JC1, before moving on to JC2 where you would finally able to get proper teachers. Is this the case for Dunman High's senior high programme. -

Not true that the M classes is for only Science/Maths Enrichment. And there are at least 20% PRC scholars there though.Hello, I'm a Year 4 Student, currently taking triple science and Geography.
There are more PRC scholars in other classes. An increasing number of them are choosing to not take Biology and they end up in other classes. This is because the M class usually has Science enrichment and those PRC Scholars are not offering Biology. -

Thanks for the information.
Think only class 3 M/ 4 M is smaller in class size....sec1dhs:
Would anyone know what are the class sizes like for Year 3s and 4s?
Why were some classes kept smaller than others?
The rest of the classes are ard 33-35 ...
3M/4M seems to be treated as a special class according to my dd like the K and L classes in the lower levels. I wonder why?

RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
The awards are top in each of the subject: Maths, Physics…, English, Higher Chinese, Normal Chinese etc as well as Principal’s List - top 10.
There are loads of other recognition, CCA achievements, Leaders, even Class Reps.
But seriously, the point is not really about competing to get the book prizes from Year 1 to Year 6.
Every often, some students will excel in the earlier years, others will start to mature in the later years and overtake the early developers.
This is especially so when the year 5/6 curriculum is pitched at Uni module and becomes more research oriented.
But in general, there is greater recognition for those who excel in the olympiads especially maths, physics etc and SMPF. Of course, there are some who manage to clinch the book prizes in addition to olympiads. -

I am not sure if you will get a reply. The overall grade is apportioned through assignments, tests etc. There is usually not a lot of weightage in the final exam paper as far as I can see.
But why bother, let the child develop along the way and find his/her interest. It’s not only about competition all the way unlike other schools.
The good thing about this school is that the environment does allow a lot of opportunities for your child.
Take a particular top boy school(not R), the emphasis is on a particular consortium for math acceleration.
It is important that the school provides everyone with a equal chance and opportunity to start with and develop. -
