I've come to realise there are various chapter tests after the 1st Poom belt and then of course the tests for the 2nd and 3rd Poom. Was also wondering if it'd be time to stop and explore other interests, but then it's also a pity to let the training go to waste. Any advice from veteran TKD parents whose kids' interest is at times waning and at times stronger? 😓
Just to share our experience with our DD, we told her that at least to get to 15yrs for the black belt conversion after poom. Now she is dan 2 and we are hoping she will get to dan 3, keeping fingers crossed. She is starting to have other interests and what is keeping her going is the bond with her friends and competitions. The last 3 years was tough as it was training without competitions, but this year is better. But she still keeps saying she wants to stop, but we encourage her not to give up as she can go to JC and take it up as CCA.Less time required compared to other sports CCA and she can have more time for other stuff. Its only 1 hour a week and plus she will have an advantage that she has seniority in belt. The same goes for polytechnic, SP,NP,NYP including TP has TKD as CCA and there is POL-ITE competition to represent the schools
Competition there is either poomsae or if they prefer kyorugi for contact sparring

Most kids drop out when they reach their teenage years as they become involve in more activities, unless there is a goal for them.Same with most sports, a lot of the kids drop out as it get more tedious and bored.
I think its ok if they explore other interests, nothing much we can do about that.

      Hi

For year 3s, what would be the usual median for sciences and maths? All around 3.6 or 4? How about for the languages?

Much thanks. School has announced removing the median from this year, so hope to get some benchmark from previous batches if possible!
Definitely not 4, in the upper 3s.Math median is higher than sciences

      Hi Sob7,
Thank so much for replying! She’s in Y1 and I just want to know if it’s a common practice. It might be a little challenge for the girls to start a new way of learning, I hope she will adapt to it. Otherwise all other subjects seems ok. May I know if math tuition is better to get 1:1 or go for IP math group tuition? I’m really clueless about it. Thanks!
It's normal to be concerned, you can always check up with her if she can handle the workload.
The gals can always ask their teachers if they do not understand the lessons, teachers are approachable.
But let her tell you if she has difficulties

      Hi Parents,

Just want to find out if the teacher give work or sLS for the girls before teaching them the topic? lastly, does your girl need tuition or extra help for math? Thanks!
Not sure what year your DD is in but I have heard from my DD some teachers do give work before teaching the topic.
But very seldom and DD does not complain, of course if have tuition some gals might already have started on the topic.

DD did not get tuition in Y1-Y2 for maths, but for Y3 she had some issues with A maths so we let her attend Tuition for A maths.( or they call maths 2 or something)

      Dear parents
Wondering if anyone knows about NSG participation in sport not offered as CCA? I wrote to NSG-MOE before and was replied that a student can enter NSG representing own school under School Adult Representative scheme (adult be parent or coach) if the school does not have the CcA nor enough teacher resources. But of course with the school approval and submission

I have asked my daughter (yr1 next year) to draft an email to the HOD of CCA/PE to enquire. Anyone aware whether RgS is open to such things? My daughter is serious with her judo. Thanks

(Of course, all under assumption NSG to resume ya) 😊
Hi RGS does allow NSG participation even if the sport is not offered as a CCA, just need to write in to Ms Chrislin Lee (Ast HOD CCA) to request for her assistance to sign up.
It's an online registration with NSG and she has the sch account to register once the registration opens up.
You will prob have to be the Sch Adult Rep for that event

      Hope that helps

Tailor your attention depending on the needs of your individual child, and don't feel pressured to treat each child exactly the same (unless they are actually very similar!). My older girl has mild learning needs, so has always needed more attention, in time as well as in detail. Even now, when she is an adult and will be starting work soon, she needs much more of my involvement. My younger girl was the one from RGS, and she always needed less attention. I just made sure I gave her reasonable amounts of time now and again, and gratefully relaxed asap! Just because you spend less time on them doesn't mean that you are less concerned, and they can sense that. Now, the younger one is my co-coach for her older sister, which is a great help to me.

Sigh... I remember when I was able to get a drink for 5 cents and char kway tiao for 30 cents. If it takes just 50 years to move change from that to now... imagine what the prices will be like in the next 50 years.
LOL will we still be around in 50 years?

      Hi parents,

My girl is thinking of putting RGS as her choice. I have a few questions here:

      1) do you find the girls going tuition in order to cope with ip? Or teachers consultation works better?

      2) for a child who is more introvert or less vocal, will it be an issue as I have seen the girls in RGS seems very confident speakers.

      3) for cca, I heard there’s audition and selection, super competitive. If the child has piano background, would it be easier to join cca like band or string?

      Thank you!
      1) Some will have tuition , have to find the time. Most subjects in Y1-Y2 are ok, but it gets tougher in Y3 depending on the subject combo. Its the same for most Sec schools I guess

      2) That is a valid concern for most parents, but the teachers encourage and will give opportunities to everyone.
With presentations and group discussions, they will take turns to voice their opinion

      3) CCA is a hit or miss, there will be selection trials by students and teachers , if first round not selected will be offered available slots.
Music CCA, priority is for those that DSA music, then will go same process as above.

      Cheers

Hi parents, can you advise me about the culture and the environment in RGS? I am shortlisting a few schools, and RGS is one of my consideration for submission next week. However, I understand it is very competitive and stressful. I will like to understand the support, the culture, the teachers and the students?
Please do help for those who have a much in depth into RGS.
      thanks alot in advance!
RGS is a school that provides a platform for girls to further achieve their potential academic, character and leadership , it also offers opportunities for the students to showcase their ability in diverse fields from sports, music and technopreneurship. There is the peer support board that is helps support the students through challenges.
Learning environment wise, its got all that is needed and maybe more with the external help from ex students.
Culture? Not really sure how to define that, but the typical RGS girl is independent, has strong opinion and articulate.

My DD is Y4 next year and so far she is happy with the school, she has a complaints and such but the camaraderie with her friends, classmates and house makes it up somehow.
They are always so busy, stress with PPA and EYA it's not always a bed of roses, but they manage.
She does not aim for the 4.0s, happy to do to the best of her abilities.
Teachers are approachable and most have consultative way dealing with the gals.

End of the day depends on your DD's character, does she thrive under pressure, seeks challenges and self driven?
What's her motivation? What makes her tick?Only she would know and her parents to an extent.
I understand that she's 12-13 and might not have give much thought about it, the virtual open house might be a good opportunity for her to see for herself if RGS is for her

      My 5 cents worth
