    • RE: Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]

      Hi!

My daughter is entering sec 1 next year and I ordered to pick up the books on the booklist fr the school bookshop next week.
However I can’t find any info on rgs website or casco website regarding rgs bookshop opening hours.
Would any parents know if it’s still opened in the afternoons and till what time?
      Thanks in advance!

Just wondering how many spaces do schools like RGS give to these niche sports.
Understand that although it is listed in the domains for the Dsa for the school, depending on the schools’ preference and maybe for certain years they may want to place more emphasis on other domains, they may only give even as few as 1 or 2 spaces.
Any parents have experience in this?
Is Dsa for RG really so tough?

As I have mentioned earlier, a competition RG team comprises of 5-6 members. Therefore, 1-2 spaces is not “few”. That’s 16% to 33% of an entire competitive team. Unless there are highly qualified individuals, I wouldn’t expect more than 3 DSA a year.

Honestly, you should already have a good gauge of your daughter’s chance. In the recent nationals (last year or the one before, since this year’s comp was cancelled), how’s her placing in the various apparatus? If she’s well placed in at least one of the apparatus, she would probably be in a strong position with a good chance. If not, you may want to consider other domains.

      Hi!
True true... 3-5 is still quite a good number.. if it’s something like 1 per year then it’s really quite Low chance regardless of percentage... really have to be the best in sg then ord..

Not sure what you mean by only 4 sec schools offer it. I suppose you are talking about DSA specifically cos quite a number of schools recognized (ie has) it as a CCA.

It’s a niche sport because it’s highly technical and require years of training (most top gymnasts by the time they reach P6 would have at least 6 to 8 years of training - which means you can’t really recruit new gymnasts in sec 1).

I think the number of CO is highly predictable since:
      1. The number of team members are limited
      2. The number of top gymnasts / winners are limited

You are probably not going to find more than 5 CO per school (which is an entire team). 1 to 2 CO per school seems more reasonable with junior members moving up from their respective affiliated primary schools (RGS has no affiliated primary school but I’m sure they have no shortage of suitors).

Thanks for your reply! Truly Rgs would have no shortage of suitors.. I think the last I heard, only 3 or 4 schools offer rhythmic gym as a Dsa, which like you mention, makes it niche and also more competitive. Just wondering how many spaces do schools like RGS give to these niche sports.

Just curious, is your daughter multi talented? Like good in dance, track and field, R gym? I ask because I see you asking about whether it is tough for these 3. Or you have more than one daughter 😂 I actually think, if she or they are not already doing quite well in these 3 areas, it is prob easiest to concentrate on her or their studies. Most people get into sec schools through psle results anyway.[/quote]I do have more than one daughter lol.. and many girls do dance really.. so all their dance friends plus themselves have more than one activity that they train in cos dance makes them fit and flexible and they cope easily with other sports too. But as schoolwork gets tougher, it is time to have to make the difficult decision which activities to drop..
Need to balance the decision on interest, aptitude, training hours required etc
Hence seeking advice from parents who have been through this journey too to guide along

      Hi!
Wondering if anyone has any advice or experience to share regarding DSA for Rhythmic Gymnastics ? Especially for Rgs and St Nics? It’s such a niche sports and only 4 secondary schools offer it, we find it difficult to come across any info shared by experienced parents.
Are the number of CO very few?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
