The use of calculators was introduced by the Ministry of Education for Primary 5 students in 2008 and Primary 6 students in 2009.[/quote]
Reason: buying a new graphing calculator costs $179 from the school (my sec3 daughter just informed me yesterday).
While buying an app that emulates the same graphing calculator (same software and functionalities as the calculator but runs on smartphone) only costs $5.
I assume almost all students already have smartphones, or else, a $179 can also buy a new decent smartphone.
