• RE: Compare RGS vs NYGH

I think most important question not answered is what happen to the girls who cannot make it after repeat in rgs? Do they then transfer to another school to take o level? What is the percentage of those in RI whose A level cannot get them into university?

Just to check, the message says express course. Is it same as IP? Thanks

yes. IP is part of express.
Thanks!
Is it RGS? I have the same question, why does it state (Secondary) Express. It is just IP correct?

Thanks, this is interesting. I tried to find on mobile version of SIS but clcnt find it. Went to the full site, then can see....

I compiled some schools, sharing in case someone finds them useful!

      Dear parents,

Just to let you know that MOE now has included the \"median scores\" in addition to the low and high scores needed for a secondary school admission. Even in the \"Choosing your Secondary Schools\" booklet that every P6 student has, only the low and high scores are shown. This new median score might be useful in choosing your sec school.

      Check this out at https://sis.moe.gov.sg/

Below is an example from Raffles Institution.

      PSLE Aggregate Score
Aggregate range of 2017 Primary 6 students posted to 2018 Secondary 1

      Non-Affiliation\tAffiliation
      Lower\tUpper\t*Median\tLower\tUpper\t*Median
      Express\t257\t 279\t263\t None-posted

      * The Median PSLE Aggregate score is the middle score of a range of PSLE Aggregate score of a group of students; i.e. half the students have PSLE Aggregate score greater than the median, and the other half of the students have PSLE Aggregate score that are less than the median. Note: PSLE aggregates of DSA pupils are excluded from computation of median.

Wah....very good and dedicated. nice compilation of info.

The original question is asking whether the grades eg. A, A*, B etc, on result slip is based on the raw score by the student. We all know that tscore is \"adjusted\" taking into account of difficulty of paper and performance of cohort.

The 2nd part of the discussion is more on the perceived performance vs actual ranked performance.
Narrow taller bell curve vs broader shorter bell curve may be one factor.

Changes in policy and how they are implemented /phased in different schools could be another factor.
      phtthp:
I think it’s adjusted.
      Don’t think A* = 91 in PSLE.
Can’t remember which year was it but many complained about the difficult maths paper.
In the end, the grades were quite good even though they didn’t finish all the questions.

This year, hearsay that in some popular schools, students from Top 3 classes cried when saw their PSLE results , because their score fell into 22x to 230 range, when they were expecting at least 250.

Or is it after moderation (adjustment), caused this to happen ?
Actually MOE has never really been clear about whether the grades are adjusted to bell curve or not.

Looking at the following link it seem to imply it is not, which I will take to mean that in a year where the paper is extremely easy, there can be lots of students scoring A* but their T-score will be lower as compared to another year.

Not too sure at this point. I've always suspected there's still gonna be a bellcurve under the new system.

We'll have to wait patiently for a 2021 candidate to tell us. Someone who does the Math paper should be able to advise parents the answer, cos as soon as the PYP is released on Popular bookshelves in Jan, the kid can check the marks he/she lost and correspond against his actual AL-point for Math 🙂 If kid was darn sure he lost more than 10 marks, and yet still attained AL1, that means there has been a moderation.
Thanks but actually I am asking about current. Just to gauge what does it really mean when a child get an A* vs an A.

Yes because A's a broad band and there's the bellcurve, the std deviation vz cohort, etc.

But under the new grading system, you should focus on bettering your own raw scores and ignore everyone else's. There were some interesting discussions in another thread among some forummers re strategising / prioritising one's revision based on the historical % of qns set on X topic (e.g. UTM Ratio - 4-mark qn) per past year Math papers, and sacrificing selected tough topics so as to grab the low hanging fruits. The logic is: after all, sacrificing 4 marks or 8 marks may still give you the same outcome of AL 1-point (> 91%), provided you're super solid in other topics.

My view is this sort of gamble should be discouraged under the present system (till 2020), because if the vast majority of kids in one's cohort can solve that 4-mark qn, the one who burnt that qn would have one's t-score affected.

Question : Is the grading of the current PSLE being adjusted according to bell curve or does it reflect the raw score with only T score being bell curve? (i.e. if someone has an A* does it mean that for the paper they get >91% or it will be adjusted depending on what others get?)

      Hi all,

A question which I am not sure anyone knows. Does any student in RGS drop out because they cannot make it? If so, when will the school let them know and where can they go given that RGS does not have O level track.

I called the school and they say as far as they know there are no such cases. Sounds very good but still a little doubtful given things I have read online saying about 5% cannot make it.

Someone with insight to share would be good.

As far as I know, the school will try its best to help the students to bring them up to par. There are remedial classes for those who need it. Those who might not do well at Years 5/6 are identified early as well so they can be brought up to speed. I don't think the school has asked students to go. There might be a very small handful who choose to leave of their own accord for whatever reasons, including going overseas for studies.

Thanks it does sound consistent with what they said which is reassuring. Thanks.
Cedar Girls is our first choice but she was upset and disappointed telling us the hard work she put in to PSLE to go RGS and now she cannot go . We told her about the stress etc and she says she can manage

Yes she wanted RGS but relented on NYGH after sharing with her about the Chinese culture etc..

Now we tell her we are still considering ..tough decision .

We want her to be happy for the next 6 years and not stress up

Which primary school is your girl from? My girl also considering both RGS and Cedar girls. Wondering if they know each other.

She is from a neighbourhood school
Ok guess you not comfortable to share. Mine is from Cedar primary. If you feel like sharing let me know otherwise all the best.
