Saw this article in Zaobao a while ago. Looks like the new P is making quite a number of good changes.
      https://www.zaobao.com.sg/forum/views/talk/story20190604-961912

      (copied from the article)

So does that hint that those that join the sch without HMT will all have a choice to take HMT lessons without any selection, and probably can to take HMT O lvl at the end?
Quite possible, definitely something to look out for. Besides those mentioned in the article are very positive changes, can really see that this new head puts in a lot of heart into the sch. 😄

Different ppl naturally have different views and considerations behind it. Some parents believe that affiliation is a very important asset to ensure that their kids get to a good JC. Some look more at the flexibility of the school to lessen unnecessary stress to the kids. Some, like me, believe in letting go and let my kid account for their decisions. You can’t expect everyone to share the same mindset.

Every school have its uniqueness, and every policy dat the sch have hav their set of reasons behind it. At the end of the day it is up to the discretion of the parent and the child on whether to make school affiliations an important consideration in mind. There is no right or wrong in upholding differing values in choosing a sch.

What matters is dat the sch is one dat the student feel positive and comfortable to study in, and fit the student’s needs and interest.

And Eddisema, don’t be fixated on the scar that you are not a student of your dream JC. Take it as a life experience, and life still carry on in reality. No point fussing over your personal past that you can’t change. By the way, seizing the chance to take CLEP, to appreciate litery arts and to reflect and grow as a person is already an unique experience. Just that whether u took the opportunity to improve yourself and appreciating what you have gained in the process, apart from what you scored for the subject in ur A level.

      Hi

May I know if Nan Chiau has very strong focus on academic & lots of homework?
I am considering of choosing this school for my DD, as its near our house. However, I am worry that the school focus too much on academic. I would prefer a more holistic environment with work play balance..
Agree with beats.sh, time management is the one that matters. My son rarely have complaints that he \"no life\"(not sure is it some term that teenagers nowadays like to use) or there is too much work. As a parent my feel is that there is a decent balance between both academic and personal growth, NCHS did do a relatively good effort on this. There is a lot of opportunities to explore their interests and my son enjoyed it during his time.

As far as academic studies is concerned, beyond pri sch, difficulty and workload is proportional to the level of study (be it sec, jc, uni). Its not wrong to say NCHS have focus on the academic advantages of the students. From the instances that they bring forward a level knowledge to aid understanding of certain subjects to setting challenging papers, to rendering extra guidance in small groups.

As for school-based activities, the curriculum itself is quite diverse, especially at year 1 and 2 to expose them to relevant lifeskills and interests. There is alot of exposure to the arts, cultural knowledge and things like 新摇, and if I remember there is some Arduino programming course and design projects for them also. In year 3 and 4, it is up to them to apply for those more in depth opportunities like sports, Model United Nation debates, overseas academic exchange programmes, scholarships, talent programmes etc on top of what the school offers like mentorship and leadership positions, as long they don't have too much problems coping.

So I would say this isn't something that u would need to worry in NCHS.

:goodpost: Agree! The cure for cultural shocks lies within the heart itself. If the kids r willing to embrace the new culture then eventually it would b a strength for them in future. What we parents have a part to play is to guide the kids to have a positive and open mindset. 😄

My DS experienced it twice. Once in NCH, once in Hwachong JC. Every school has its own culture and every slight difference can change the way kids study. When he came back disheartened on the first day of sec 1 asking why I guided him to choose a \"Chinese\" school, I told him to open up and face it as a new learning experience. He eventually adapted to it and became to like the school. He grew from a quiet boy to be quite active as a CCA leader. Guess these kind of experiences helped him a lot to socialise and adapt, so he wasn't too affected when he entered JC.

For me I do feel that it is really a good chance for them to experience such a distinct and disciplined culture that is quite hard to find in a conventional school.

Sorry to ask again.... on the Malay language (special program) offered at NCHS. Is it popular and do students stick to it till O level? Thanks.

There is usually 1 MSP class per level (got special room for them). The students under MSP will attend it throughout the 4 years (is scheduled in the time table).

Most of the students opted for it when they selected their sec sch (some of them took it since pri sch). Not really sure abt the lessons as we did't really look into it all the while.

    • RE: * Eunoia JC (EJC)

IMO is a matter of choice lah.

If ur DD is not willing to enter EJC, but still want to study in SNGS, its rather that she take the O Lvl track since she alrd made up the choice to eventually drop back to O Lvl track, isnt it (will be less stressful that way). Even if she changed her mind, its still possible to enter EJC via O Lvl results, or to the top few JCs out thr (and definitely EJC’s COP like other JCs wont shoot up too competitively these few yrs due to govt’s policy to increase intake)

Another thing is that the school might not give full opportunity to those who switch fm IP to O Lvl since u alrd left a bad record there that u rejected their so called "best" programme. Unless ur DD is confident she can grab all the relevent opportunities like leadership positions, enrichments before she switch to O Lvl track from IP. There is not need to choose IP then change back to O Lvl (coz u won’t get the credit for entering IP track upon graduation).

So my take is either u use PSLE (if ur DD’s T-score good) to enter IP that leads to ur DD’s preferred JC-partner sch, or just take O Lvls and enter that JC via JAE (or even better if can, via DSA since dat usually secure leadership positions in JC).

Hm cchm is better because first of all it’s sap (which means can use the hmt points), Chinese culture appreciation programme is offered, and the school only takes in chinese or students who take chinese as their mother tongue. Note: cchy isnt sap. The mep programme offered by cchm is comparable to many other schools. Cchm also has more ccas (like track, netball, table tennis etc). Lastly: cchm is pure express (no na and nt) so i guess the lessons conducted will at a faster pace. However cchy has a pretty high distinction rate too, 99% of cohort are eligible for jc and 100% for poly (im not too sure about cchm though) both are affliated to nyjc so i guess its a safety net to fall back on during o levels.

We are contemplating between Nan Chiau High and Chung Cheng (Yishun) (Chung Cheng Main was too far for us)...

So technically as an SAP school Nan Chiau does offer similar programmes as Chung Cheng Main (Heard Nan Chiau's sciences not bad). Both environment are impressive to me and my wife. Now considering distance (tho travelling time almost the same fm Woodlands), culture and whether All express cohort or a smaller Express cohort.

Anyone having same contemplation as us? 😓

I would suggest go for the openhouses (Nan Chiau High's openhouse is tmrw). U can ask the teachers abt the cohort also.

Think for CCHY still can go in to ask for a consultation with the respective teachers. (or u can call in if u wish) Since the openhouse was bef the PSLE release. 😄
