Just wonder can students bring kindle (e-book) to school? Will it be confiscated?
Students are allowed to bring kindles to school! Just don't use it during lessons and you should be fine 🙂 Additionally PLDs will be bought in Sec 1 so you might like to consider that too! During recesses and breaks mobile phones are also freely allowed to be used so you could also download the Kindle app on your phone and look at it so you don't have to bring so many devices :))

Hi all, just wonder any student taking Malay as third language at NYGH? Whether is it taught in house? Thank you
Hello! Its a late reply but would just like to share a bit of what I know since I have a lot of classmates taking MSP haha!! (I don't take it personally but I have classmates who do since I was grouped in a same class as them!) For MSP in NYGH, it is in house and there are usually two slots for the lesson in the same level (e.g. For say S1 MSP, child can choose lesson either on Monday or Tuesday, Monday is always fixed, Tuesday may be cancelled sometimes due to various circumstances (but the days change from year to year and level to level, this is just an example)). From what I've heard, MSP's assessments (lower sec) can include making of brochures about the school (in Malay, of course!). Apologies if this isn't very exact because I don't take any Third Language :(( If you'll like to know more about other aspects of Nanyang do PM me or let me know here! Hope this answer helped 🙂

hi can anyone tell me the full no. of students in each class ? Also how are the enrolment assigned, i.e. how many places for dsa, how many for affiliated students and finally how many for non- affiliated students entering through psle results ? if exact no. not known then a rough estimation would be appreciated. thank you.
For the number of students in each class, its usually around 27-35! In every class there should be some DSAs of various domains (so like not only sports but also academic domains) but the number really depends from year to year! Since around 80 affiliated students enter NYGH each year I would say 300-310 would be a good estimate for non-affiliated students (++DSAs, so actual number who enter by PSLE score may be lower).

I'm also a current NYGH student! you can always approach me if you have any questions about NYGH too 🙂

Gal just joined NYGS... she just invited to join the Whatsapp group for the coming Sec 1 student. Was surprise to find ~ 80% of the participants are from affiliated NYPS. The 2nd big group is from RGPS.
Anyone knows what is the approx percent of the cohort of NYGS are from NYPS? When will they be informed of their new class? Some schools e.g. Chung Cheng, have already informed the students of their classes. Thanks.
You will know of your child’s classes through parents gateway a few days (not too sure, can call the school to check) before school starts on 4 January. Your child may also check on a bulletin board placed near the canteen on 4 January.

By the way, there is a chat group with the sec 1s+ and seniors from nygh together. You can PM me (I’m a senior!) for your child to join (It’s a student only chat sorry) (edit: closed! the chat is full:( )

Once a year only?
there’s also a calligraphy lesson during Chinese lessons every year. Two sessions a year. During Chinese lessons in school so attendance is compulsory.

Dear Sec one parents. Is it necessary to purchase the e-book for think! Mathematics textbooks? Or hard copies will do?

Thank you.
Hello! Am a student here, (sec 2 next year), and I feel e-book isn’t necessary! In fact, the teachers will be using the physical book every lesson and will not accept the use of e-book during lessons (but may change with the PDPL next year)! so the e-book is more for at home revision! Hope that helped!

Hi wishuponawishingstar

Thank you for your sharing. What CCA did you join in the end?

Which CCAs are generally hard to get in, for someone with no prior experience? How many trials or auditions can one go for? How many choices does one have?
Hello! I joined St John Brigade in the end, and I would say that it has been a very fulfilling experience so far!

Along with Debate, I would say Theatre, Choir, Modern Dance, Chinese Dance, Badminton (only 2 slots for non-DSA), Artistic Gymnastics etc would be difficult for someone with no prior experience. For the performing arts CCAs listed above, they have 2-3 rounds of trials and choir has quite high standards (from what I heard) while modern dance and Chinese dance may require a good or at least some foundation in dance. Some sports also require a certain foundation.

You could go for as many trials or auditions as you want, just make sure the trial dates don’t clash. Do note that the number of trials you go for does not give you priority for if you wish to appeal your child’s CCA after the CCA results come out.

You have 5 choices and one must be a uniformed group! Technically, you could not go for a uniformed group trial and put uniformed group down as an option. For other CCAs, you must go for the trial before you put that CCA down as an option.

Hope that helped!
Thanks for the information. May I know what is your DD's cca? It's quite a huge amount.. Is it Inforcomm club?

Nope not infocomm. She is in debate. It is expensive because it is a small club. Each batch takes in only 7 to 8. So each member as to shoulder a bigger share of the cost.

Hi Swc

How does NYGH debate club select its members? Is debating experience in primary school compulsory? My child is very interested in the debate club but has no prior experience. We are a little disheartened to hear about the small intake. Thank you.
Hi! I’m a Sec 1 this year and I attended the debate club trials ( but didn’t get in 😞 )
You don’t actually need prior experience according to the seniors and I think that’s true! To sign up for trials, you must fill in the yellow form that the debate CCA give you at the CCA fair and fill in by the stipulated time! (Not sure if it is the same in 2021, this is in my experience) Get a passport-sized photo ready too because you need to stick one onto the form!
For the trials, round 1 would be a group of students together to discuss some topics! The seniors will interview the students and it’s quite chill I would say.
For Round 2 (selected students from round 1), it is a one-on-one session where you have to say an impromptu speech based on a topic they give you on the spot.

I only attended round 1 of trials, so if you have any questions, you can approach me! Hope that helped!
