Actually, no. As I said, I'm not a guide. I'm a scout. 2 totally different things. Raffles 01 Scout Troop or 2102 Raffles Scout Group, I'll leave that up to your imagination and luck. πŸ˜›

All right, Girl Guides is pretty close to the scouts syllabus. In Year 1 + 2 they will try to achieve the World Scout Badge + Bronze Badge (Scout Standard). This involves tying knots (Reef Knot, Bowline, Sheet Bend, Sheep Shank etc.) and lashing (Square Lash + Diagonal Lash + Timber Hitch.)

In Year 2 or Year 3 they'll typically receive their leadership appointments and be inducted into COH (Court of Honour). Other than that Guides also have to organize the annual assembly for RGS guides which is like a scout campfire without a campfire.
Guides in RGS have 3 companies (1st, 2nd, 3rd), and each company has 5 patrols.
01 (Orchid, Ixora, Jasmine, Morning Glory, Sunflower)
02 (Bougainvillea, Morning Glory, Sunflower, Ixora, Orchid)
03 (Dove, Kingfisher, Mynah, Oriole, Swallow)
Each patrol comprises of 4-6 people. So in guides there's a lot of space if anyone wants to join.

Don't confuse 01 and 02 with their respective scout troops in RI, there's a lot of difference.

Anyone care to share the activities involved in the Girl Guides cca? Is it twice per wk?
I was told the waiting list is pretty long fr this cca... The cca my DD prefer is not in rgs...

      Hi!
I'm not in girl guides but according to what my friend told me, it is twice a week. Every two weeks or maybe once a month (not sure about this) they tie braids. The rest of the time their hair is tied into a bun I think!
I usually just see them learning how to make knots, or lashing wooden structures together. Occasionally the year 3s would also split firewood with an axe. I THINK Year 1s learn the knots, year 2s raise the flag during national anthem, year 4s just pass on the knowledge...
Every batch in Guides is around 20 people? But yes quite a lot of people would apply.
They have patrol groups too with a Year 4 in charge but I'm not sure what they do...
      Hope this helped!

Some schools set killer papers to motivate their students while others set easy papers to motivate their students. Which top schools' exam papers (2013) is the closest standard/same difficulty as the actual PSLE papers? Kindly state the school and subject.

No one has any idea...papers from RGPS, CHS and Rosyth are good though!

i suddenly am full of hope again reading ur post πŸ™‚

DS math is between 50-60, one a few occasion fail by 1-2 marks
his paper 2 failed and pull down the overall marks
he wout say he is lazy, he trys his best to complete all hw given by teacher and tutor. problem is he does not speak up or ask when he does not understand. he will just do the correction and then forget how to do again when the same kind of questions was given to him. so its kind of frustrating
when i explained to him, he understand but after a while, he forgets again,
got to repeat and re-inforce the same kind of sum many times before it gets to his head.
nevertheless, i am not going to give up on hin now
but its not easy to strike a balance of \"overloading\" him and letting him enjoy his childhood

Just to share some experiences. Some pupils have difficulty retaining what was taught because they treat the specific process, data, information as \"discrete data\". The more discrete information is, the less likely it will be retained in their memory.

One way to help anchor lessons taught is to created as many connections to examples, real-world applications, other concepts, etc... as possible. The more connections the child can make, the more likely he/she will be able to remember. Sometimes we are so focused on the child getting the answer \"right\", that we forget to provide the needed connections that help them anchor their learning in long term memory.

      Hope this helps...

      Hi there!
When I was preparing for the PSLE I remembered I studied by reading all the keyphrases aloud to myself for Science, doing/going thru compre for English, reading the textbook/guidebook for Chinese and for Math, doing sum after sum. For math there really is no escape. You just have to drill it until you're familiar. My PSLE score was 272 (a bit of a disappointment for me), because I was pretty sure I made careless mistakes for math.

You are right that you have to link the concepts to real life examples. However to me math is not just about concepts. It's the process;the way of doing a question that matters. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

    • RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)

      Hi there.

As for reference, I honestly think that 3A and 1 A* isn't going to put you in. There are people from my current batch that were rejected even with a NMOS Silver/Gold. Try though! Give it your best. You haven't been rejected until you've tried. Even so don't lose hope. Just because you're not in RI doesn't mean you're in any way inferior. Other students will and do in fact perform better then RI students sometimes!!
As to anyone here who has questions regarding the school, feel free to ask me! I'm a Year 3 currently studying in RI and I'm really proud of my school! πŸ™‚

    • RE: Malware

      Hi there.

Looking at your computer, I think there are two options for you. Fix it or do a fresh Windows install.
      1) Attempt to fix it
If the malware allows you to install a antivirus (Any will do, your choice) install it immediately. Has your AVG cleaned up the malware? If nothing happens, then skip this step as the malware is likely blocking your process. Try again with a different one like McAfee (paid) or Avast (free).
After which, install CCleaner and defragment your drive. Use CCleaner to declog your registry, which the malware may have written to.
If none of this works, please follow step 2.
      2) Fresh Windows Install
Do a system restore to factory settings, and see if this resolves the problem.
      3) New hard disk drive with fresh Windows install
If the problem is still not fixed (which is highly unlikely), buy a new hard drive and install Windows on it.
Please PM me if you have any questions.

    • RE: Which Ultrabook will you recommend?

Ultrabooks normally don’t have a dedicated GPU. They don’t have the case space (cooling power) nor the battery. Some come with under 256 GB SSD, and 4GB ram is not a requirement. Minimum 2GB. But most ultrabooks come with 4 GB RAM. Ultrabooks also don’t need to be 4th Gen Intel Haswell processor. 2nd or 3rd gen also can.

Just curious, not sure any feel the same? :rahrah: seems that the recent assessments are easy , generally getting max score is not uncommon for most of the subjects?? :grphug:

My dd in Y1, some of her subjects' score are below median. Your post is an alarm to me. :imdrowning:

She always said school works are manageable, neither easy nor tough, I brought her to book store, she said none of the assessment books related to her school work. How to help? I am very worry now...

Honestly speaking, no one is supposed to get full marks in subjects...in my 3 years, full marks are very rare. The norm is around 3.2-3.6 GPA. Also, homework can be manageable, but why some people cannot score is because they don't have the requisite answering techniques. It is also not true that the syllabus is not covered by the assessment books. Around 80% is covered, just at a slightly higher level which can be obtained from readings or worksheets. The assessment books are a ok gage of her ability.

      Hi. Hmsg and Kira,

I went to Istudio and did a research, yes, with the bundled AppleCare, Saprura's prices for all models are cheaper than the shops in town. So it is worth to me to buy from Sapura as the girls can alway seek their help and support when there is any issue.

As whether air or pro, for the two 256g storage models, pro is S$235 more, but you will get: 1. Retina display, 2. 2.4GHz duo core vs 1.3GHz, 3. 8gb ... DDR3L Memory, (means faster reaction). Definitely worth buy, then it's the mater of if the girl cares or can feel the difference...
Air weight is 200gm lighter, while Pro is about 1cm smaller both width and depth.
Also for you info, for the same 256gb storage models, Pro is S$300 more than air in town.
So we roughly know which model we are going to buy πŸ˜‰

Hope the information is also useful to other concerned parents. πŸ™‚
Hi there, I would like to clarify some misconceptions here. 4GB of RAM is sufficient for most uses, but if your girl is doing photoshop or gaming, 8Gb of RAM would be good. Secondly, DDR3L memory is the 1.35V version of DDR3 memory, can be used in x4, x18 and x16 configurations, and has a DLL. LPDDR3 is almost the same as DDR3L except that it does not have a DLL, and therefore most of the time, runs on only 1 chip per memory channel. Essentially, not much difference, the memory bandwidth and I/O bus clock is the same. I would like to also clarify that the Retina display in this case does not run on its full resolution at all times, or else text and apps would be too hard to see. Instead the resolution is scaled depending on what app you open. Most of the time it runs at a resolution comparable to Full HD (1920x1080).
As for the processor, the difference will be pretty noticeable for intensive tasks like gaming or photoshop. You don't need a processor above 1.5 GHZ for tasks like schoolwork or typing.
The main difference between the two comes down to the GPU. The MacBook Air has a Intel HD5000, and the Pro has a Intel Iris 5100 (Iris Pro 5200 for 15'model). Basically, the Pro, as its namesake suggests, is for professionals who do basic video and picture editing. The advancements of the Iris over the 5000 are quite significant. The Iris has 28W TDP, and a higher maximum frequency, and can has up to 832 GFLOPS of graphics compute power. In schoolwork, your girl won't be applying this, but for things like graphics design and video editing, the difference will be very. very. noticeable.

      Hope this helps!
