The main difference between 说明文 and 议论文
议论文 ( Argumentative ) => you get to agree/disagree with the point stated in the question and/or get to express our personal thoughts and opinions, i.e. 论点 (to be backed up using 论证手法、论据 and 论证）.
Need to be familiar with the theme of the topic, am i correct ?
说明文 (not sure is classified as what type in englist) => you simply have to analyze and explain the stated view/stand with 说明手法 - you \"can't\" disagree with it and would need to be relevant knowledge about the topic so that your 说明手法 are legit and convincing.
Thus 议论文 will usually be the easier of the 2 (factors such as topic covered in the question and whether students has prior knowledge and/or experience writing about the topic would obviously play a part though).
