not that i know of. but dd's future primary school will cater food for first 1 or 2 weeks and thereafter will have a p4 buddy bring them around to ahow them how to queue, buy, get change and eat. my p4 ds told me he had a classmate who had to spoonfeed his p1 buddy cos he doesn't know how to scoop very well.

We brought our kid to a primary school canteen -Zhonghua Primary School to practise buying food and drinks during their recent open house. I was told by the stall holder that parents should give coins in different denomination to P1 children because the drink stall holder said the Pri 1 children gave 2 dollar note or 5 dollar note to him and ran off without collecting the change!

Please remember this golden advice.

Look out for other schools open house and bring your child go see look primary school environment and practise buying food in canteen. It doesn't matter whether your child is going to that school or not. Just go for the see see look look experience.

Great family bonding experience. Educational too.

My P5 is struggling with the sudden jump in the standard and workload. Twins should be gg to their brother's school but contemplating to place them in a nearer school because of 1 hr school bus journey if go to brother's school.

Yeah, I have the same sentiment as you.. I'm so worried my little piggy is unable to get used to P1 next year. Wonder if he will be able to order food by himself. Unlike his elder brother, little piggy loves to stay home. He loves to eat-in rather than eating outside when I don't cook.

Did you complete the Phase 1 form/survey sent by your ds' school?

1hr schoolbus journey is long but there are many kids going through this every day. If you think that it's better to study closer to home after your experience with your ds, then go for it.

any good maths class to recommend ?

If your child can count backwards, then subtraction will not be a problem. I think initially the hurdle will be the crossing of tens, say before 30 the child should know it it 29 and before 70 is 69 etc...

I think using those Montessori kind of tools will help the child to visualize. Quite well...

hello everyone, my son is 6 yo this year. I'd just like to share my experience about his addition/subtraction progress.

I'd tried to teach him but failed miserably. So i signed him up for kumon and somehow someway, he knows how to read and do the +/-. I like that it builds on basics and work from there. he is supposed to see the question and know the answer, without counting fingers/toes/backwards/forwards. it teaches a skill, which is what i am aiming for. Not so much that he gets it all right (that's important of course )

In singapore, they give 10 pages of worksheets, but in the States, it's 5 pages, so i asked the instructor to just cut it down to 5 pages where it's manageable and i won't :stompfeet: :rant: :frustrated:

So it might help in your bid to teach the + - x /

I am contemplating signing DS for kumon maths too. Having same problem as yourself. Yup, worried about the no. of worksheets as homework too. Btw, how long has he been with Kumon? Is your DS’ progression good ?

i signed him up when he was 4... now he can read and do + -. now practising x.
he has spelling in k2 and i so-called teach him by just saying the word and he spells. And he can spell by the sound of the word. of course, as u know, sometimes the spelling doesn't coincide with the sound(s) so i just prompt him along and then he gets it. sometimes he will say \"i have not seen the words yet!\" i'm, like, try, i'll help u.
he is very lazy lah... so sometimes have to coax and bribe him to do... like after kumon, can go ikea play at the playground etc
sg instructor more strict... in the states, the instructor said if he doesn't know how to do, tell him the answer, don't make him sit there. it'll discourage him.
but here, the instructor won't tell, they tell him to try himself first. then i went to ask the instructor, dunno means dunno, i feel that u should not make him sit there to 'try'
maybe it's their method here lor... but i told my son to go and ask if he doesn't know.
i feel that his progression is good. he is doing 3 digit subtraction now. i know that maybe his progress may be behind the others because of the lesser pages but it keeps him interested and doesn't overwhelm him. that's more impt to me.
but :rotflmao: when he does the math, i can't help but think to myself, aiyah next time can use calculator... :imcool:
