Hi, anyone knows which English assessment book has word order/ sentence scramble questions?

Think that can be DIY. Pick sentences fr storybks and scrambled. Have a mixed of proper and common nouns.

Somehow I feel that the approach to mastering languages is different from Maths. (more) Practice doesn’t make perfect, unlike Maths.

Doing more cloze or compre exercises don’t seem to help much.

Or am I the only one with this observation?

It does help...especially for cloze. Surprisingly, my son is good in comprehension cloze but very careless for grammar cloze with past perfect tense and past participle.

Agree with you for my son's case. Read a lot is better than doing more cloze or compre exercises.

Anyone using/bought the "thinking writers" series from eph? I briefly browse thru book 1 and book 4 and thought they are quite good. But then I am no expert. I am looking for assessment /guide books on English compo for p1. Any recommendation?

i understand for english, reading widely is generally the best way to improve. but for a quick solution to prepare for PSLE, i'm thinking assessment books are the way to go. But how to work on composition? Are there books for that?

There are books which published creative / good phrases recommended for use in primary school composition. These books can be found in Popular bookstores. Was told that in order to score good marks for composition, besides the content and flow of the storyline, the use of creative / good phrases is important. Some diligent teachers will ask their pupils to come out with some creative / good phrases, select the good ones, typed and compiled them. Get them to memorise and put to use in their writing. And of course, practice makes perfect, the more the kids write, the better they are.

Practice does makes perfect, if not makes better. Regardless in areas of academics or non- academics, like singing, dancing or sports. The phrase is \" learn from your mistakes\", dont repeat the same mistakes.

                    iLoveChubby:
Just came across a new EL assessment book by CASCO that covers the new PSLE syllabus :

                    http://i48.tinypic.com/jrttvo.jpg\">

Sneak peeks of the stimulus-based conversation and continuous writing pages:

At least this book gives me, someone who is pretty clueless of the new changes (DS's school has not given any briefing to the parents), an overview of how the new exam format will be like.
Guess there will be more such assessment books coming up...
I, too, like english assessment books published by Casco. If you go to their branches ( I know there is one at Towner Road), you can get 20% discount. Not sure if it is still valid. Pls give them a call to find out more for those who are keen.

Comprehension cloze - other than Just edu, casco, conquer, is there any good cloze passage assessments? Thank you in advance.

Recently, my dd’s form teacher recommended the thick book published by fairfield publishers. Anyone tried fairfield for English? I read somewhere that Fairfield English books’ answers were not accurate. Thank you
