Hi all,

Thanks for all the tips and advice, but it really sound frightening for the preparation for P1.

English
My gal has gone thro ICR for 2 yr and even completed the ICR2 but she sometime she just refuse to think or use the phonic skills she learn while she read esp when I am doing the reading with her, but when she is on her own, she sound fine....so really dunno wat to do with her.

Chinese
my hubby is the one who guide her but she has a resistance to learn chinese despite she is using chinese most of the time, her kindergarden chinese is also v chim, some of her chinese spelling words is what I suppose I learn in P3 or 4.......when getting her grandpa to revise, she told him off not to stress her and she will score well without stress.... haha a K2 kid talking about stress. but usually she score well and marks got deducted due to no proper stroke or no proper full stop..........

Maths
She attends CMA, so no problem with addition and substraction but when ask her try out problem sum, she just not interested and dun want to even try.

Any advice on the chinese preparation for P1, izit enough preparation for Maths and English. :?

Belinda, your child sounds more than prepared for P1 compared to most of the other children in her cohort. So don't worry and relax. She is ready for P1.

This is all so scary!!!

All the pre-preparation and stuff.

Was just looking at the Kumon series of workbooks 2 days ago on starting multiplication for my 5 year old. Decided to drop it because felt that it might just be too early for him. As he is now going through addition and subtraction to the hundreds.
Somemore we just started hanyu pinyin.

Think I’ll need to hunt for grammar & vocab books and chinese-sentence books for him liao. Think I better move down to popular soon.

Right now he does only single chinese characters and those english activity books. They don’t emphasize on grammar or vocab.

hi winth,
addition/subtraction to the hundreds is not in P1 syllabus, though it is useful to know.
but multiplication is. good thing is that you still have a whole year next year to prepare your kid, you can slowly introduce multiplication before your kid starts P1 in 2010. starting concepts on multiplication in K2 is just nice. 🙂

for grammer and vocab...heck! i don't even know how to differentiate between the 2.

Hi Jedamum,

Thanks for the advice.
Do you know if number bonds is still in the syllabus?
Is hanyu pinyu taught for first half of the year for P1?

I've ordered about 8 books from popular and 2 more kumon books but they are still in process of delivery. So anxious to start them.
I'll be doing compre and compo with him when my books come.
for grammer and vocab...heck! i don't even know how to differentiate between the 2.
This is darn important! I use casco publications for they have books dealing with only grammar and vocabulary. If the child is weak in grammar (is/are/was/were thingy), lots of marks will be deducted and this will become very obvious when they hit P3 and beyond.

Don't bother to buy longman... tried and tested, not useful.

Hi,

Assuming all schools are the same, below is what i've gathered from my gal's school this week during some talks conducted by them :

Han yu pinyin is taught 1st half year for my P1 girl.

No. bonds are still taught. Initially is just up to 10, than 20 and so on. 😄

Thanks for the info. on assessment books, wil check on casco next time. 🙂

winth,

i went digging around the cupboard and found a grammer/vocab/compre book. now have to find time to slot into my boy's 'holiday timetable' for him to do. 😛

from the P1 math textbooks, there are still number bonds.
from the P1 chinese textbooks, there are hypy from the very first page.

thanks for the heads up on casco english books. casco has good math books too...just didn't know that they have good english books too. 😉

Longman's math test assessment is not bad.

Thanks for the confirmations!

At least I think I’m on the right track.

You’re welcome!
Have tried to look at Longman English trying to find suitable books, (they’re) not to the standard and not very focused. Plus, they usually come with very thin pages, lots of unfriendly fonts. Very difficult to keep up the child’s interest. Have not looked at Longman since.

For Chinese, the killer in HYPY is usually the tone marks or 调号. They usually have difficulty pronouncing tone 2 & 3. Should focus liao…
