anyone know how the teaching method and program will be for a typical Dyslexia school?
will they repeatedly teach the same thing week over week?
or they will have structured program and teach different thing very session?
i am not sure how would my kid benefit from going to such program and it is not cheap…

if you are able to spend an hour a day teaching your child how to read and write that would be far more beneficial than sending the child for a dyslexia program. DAS actually conducts courses to equip parents to teach their child.

This is very very true.

We didn't go through it but we know they use kinaesthetic and multisensory methods as well as mnemonics to help the children. If you can teach your child yourself, you can attend the parent's course as suggested by above poster, or you can read up and learn from books. The typical Peter and Jane series or phonics series will not work well for these children without at least some modification.

The important thing is you must be very consistent, and observant to see what works and what does not. You have to be self disciplined in bringing the lessons to your child. Because my child has vision and directional problem as well, I had to enlarge the materials used and work on his directionality as part of teaching him to read.

Are there any dyslexic parents support group in sg ??

My DS (P1) is attending DAS ELA programme now, but his English is very poor, especially for comprehension. Although he is very strong in math, but I worry that if he doesn’t have good fundation in English, his math will drop in upper level, as he will not be able to understand the meaning of the question.


I will appreciate if any one can recommend a good patient tutor for P1 English (grammar, comprehension, composition). I prefer small group (2-3 kids).

My DS (P1) has just been diagnosed with dyslexia and the DAS Psychologist said that she will put down in her report to recommend my DS to exempt from MTL and to request for extra time for exam.


I will appreciate that if anyone can share their experiences with me that is it best for my DS to exempt from MTL or need to monitor for a couple of years till P3 or P4? Is there any gauge that what marks to score for each subject to justify for exemption? TIA

Can anyone share how the assessment for dyslexic at DAS like?

My child, just started P1 this year will be going for the assessment soon. She is very shy when comes to stranger. Can a parent sit in during the assessment?

I was not allowed to sit in but if your child is very reluctant you can ask the tester. I made sure my son had a good sleep and a jacket so he would be comfortable in the aircon room.

The tester will try her best to make the child comfortable and the length of the test depends on the child. If your child has any other issues or have been tested before by ther professionals, let them know beforehand so that they can select what they feel is the most helpful test to build your child's profile and identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
