I thought I should pay my dues since I benefited a lot from this forum when my DD applied via DSA (General) to DHS last year. You could also try the other forum DSA 2014 if you want more information on DSA
DD was accepted by DHS via DSA last year and is now attending Sec 1. DHS was my DD's one and only DSA application. We were sceptical initially that she would stand a chance because she was neither extremely strong in Maths or Science (neither participated in any Maths or Science Olympiad) nor in GEP. DD is however strong in languages so we decided to give it a shot under DSA (General) as DD's results meet the minimum criteria of 85% - 90%. You never know until you try!
Your DD will have to take the GAT test (which is a General Ability Test) if she wants to try for DSA. Thereafter, she will be invited to an interview cum English test if DHS accepts her in the first round (i.e. after the GAT test and submission of school results etc).
As a parent, I think it is important that we prep our kids of what to expect in the DSA process and GAT so that they know how to manage their own expectations/priorities. The DSA exercise is not one based solely on academic results but rather one of finding the right fit which is why they have interviews as part of the selection process. Hence, the entire process could drain the kid emotionally and affect his/her PSLE preparation if he or she is not well prepared of the consequences (even more so during the period end August/early Sep when they wait for the confirmation letters while preparing for PSLE). I myself have seen a kid coming out of the exam halls after the GAT test crying when I pick DD up after her test last year because she could not handle a lot of the questions. I have also heard of some who got demoralised because they were not accepted to the schools they DSAed even though they have stellar results. The way I explained to DD if you get in via DSA, it is a bonus! If you don't, you just have to work hard and get the results you need to earn a place in DHS.
To me, it was tough (the emotional roller coaster ride waiting for the confirmation letter while preparing for PSLE, the anxiety every time some other classmate gets the confirmation letter but not your DD) but it was a good experience because DD learned how to stay focused on her PSLE preparation and I think it good training to prep her for Sec 1.
Hope that helps! -

Hello there, I'm enquiring. My daughter got accepted into GUZHENG AND CHINESE ORCHESTRA in DHS. She has problems deciding which to pick. Firstly, she has quite a lot of commitments with third language and tuitions (she's a little of a slow learner). Her original choice was CO followed by GZ but the teacher in charge told her that because it's hard to get into Guzheng and since she has, the teacher would like to give her a chance to change her choice. She has totally no music background and is not sure because she is worried that if she joins CO, she will not be given a CCA of her choice. Since she doesn't have Guzheng experience, do you know if she will have a chance to represent school team sometime and what do you think about the CCA management?

Hello there, my daughter got accepted in GZ and CO. She has quite heavy commitments with outside school activities and I was wondering if Any advice on which CCA to take can be given. Although she should be allocated into the CCA in order of what she had chosen, she had originally put GZ as third choice and CO as second, but the teacher told her that GZ is quite an elite CCA so since she got in, ask her to consider if she wants to change that to second choice. She has completely no background btw. Do advice on which CCA would be better thanks

Hi, would like to share a bit on this. My girl has no music background as well and after the cca interview, she got into Guzheng cca as well. It's a small group and they only accept 9 students from year one last year. Including herself, there are 3 of them who are totally new to Guzheng. Every students have to attend Guzheng lesson in external music school organized by the school (for CO as well). They also need to take the Guzheng assessment (θηΊ§οΌevery year. Since it's a small group, everyone has a chance to participate in any events. Think it's a great opportunity. -

May I check with you, if we are already learning guzheng from another private teacher other than the external music school organised by the school (ζ―δΈι³εοΌ), do we still need to attend this music school's guzheng lesson? -

Thank you for your response. May I know if she's coping well? Because of additional lessons of the GZ im not sure if I daughter can handle it. She has 3 tuition days and 1 third languageraindropsonroses:
