My son 9 months old already. Is it too late to start this flash card method? Plan to buy some stuff from GD baby in near future. Anyone share the experience that start these stuff as late as me?
Thanks for any information… -

I start mine at 1 1/2 years old. The younger you start the better. As they grow older, it is not easy to get them to sit down to look at the flash card, but when they are young, it is easier. My son 9 months old already. 9 Month is ok, just need to let them have the habit of looking at flash card. Flash the card even if they are not looking, they will get used to it

Thanks a lot phantom!
I feel much better to give it a try to my son now

Someone ask me through my blog why my baby can be so attentive to my flashcards sessions but she cant seem to get her son to concentrate… I think its basically
1) speed of the flashcards
2) tone of parent’s voice
3) stop before the baby wants to stop (GD’s motto)
4) how well prepared the materials are and frequency of new materials (new words, etc)
our babies get bored so easily…
I am still trying to perfect my flashcard timing but I also found another way to be quite successful. I played peek a boo with my baby (she sits near the corner of the bed with my maid or hubby behind her in case she falls. I play peek-a-boo by hiding at the side) then bring out one word card each time and ‘flash’ in front of her. She was surprised & was laughing very loudly… after i finished 5 words, she was asking for more!
anyway, I just bought 280 GSM A4 white paper to print pictures and words on them to start second sessions of flashcards with visuals for my baby to relate the words she is learning with pictures. It’s done in MS word, example, I printed my photo with big red ‘MUMMY’ below in a landscape orientation… Quite easy… just google or yahoo images of the words baby has been flashed like tamborine… then use MS Word and print colour! -

wow, mincy, your kid dont get bored with 300 items in 5 min? I only flash 5 dot cards, 3 maths equations, 5 english words and 5 chinese words x 3 times daily! Coz i think they get bored so easily!jedamum:
wa...i am never really into flash cards....is it that powerful?
It is a frequently used method for learning lah. Even some learning soft ware for adults used that. I guess now kids start young. The theory is that the flash cards help them focus and once you hook them to it... you can teach them lots of stuff with it.
I personally like the fast method cause you can cover many things in a short period. I cannot flash as fast as 0.4 sec but at 1 second per card you can cover 300 items in 5 minutes.

I have the 'SIGN with your baby' box set and GD baby has the CD-rom of reading flash cards with native speaking narrative in French, Spanish, German and Japanese... since i cannot speak another foreign language, i just let my bb watch Big bird in Japan to learn the songs and the basic japanese words..hahaha.. But hey i am interested in the mind games.. but i heard and gathered that we can find similiar games from shichida or those mindchamps at GROWING FUN..even down to the memory cards for different levels. Am going to try the memory & matching cards for 12mths old..Just thought we should start a thread to exchange tips / resources/ideas /games on how to do some DIY brain training and at home. After all the $$$ brain training school we sign up for probably use quite a lot of the exsiting materials & know how out there.
Brain training:
1. Flash Cards
2. Memory train (I think Mind champs use a similar method.) Basically to show a series of unrelated pictures and tell a funny story for the kid till they remember the sequence of the images.
3. Photographic memory: Look at a picture for 2 seconds. After that hide away the picture and try to remember where the position of some of the items are.
Activities link with higher IQs
1. Reading
2. Sign Language for young kids
3. Music training/ listening to classical music for young kids
Exposing children to languages
1. Listening to stories in other languages
2. Listening to songs in other languages
3. Flash cards of languages -
Actually, you can make your own memory games.
For example linking memory, (and I suspect memory train…any mindchamps parents to confirm? ) is a known method for remembering list of items.
e.g. you have 5 pictures
1. rabbit
2. house
3. strawberry
4. flower
5. hot chocolate
To link the 5 items in sequence, you can try to visualize the items and make up a story to help you remember.
e.g. A rabbit jumps on the house that smells like a strawberry but is actually a flower watered in hot chocolate.
The story don’t really need to make any sense, in fact the more funny or silly it is the more likely it is to remember.
So the game involves 2 items.
1. A big picture showing all the items in the list
2. The individual pictures of the items.
You then tell your child the story. as the two of you look at the big picture. After that hide the big picture and take out the individual small pictures and let your child place it in order. you might have to show him/her a few times as you tell the story. Then help her with it.
Start with a few then add on to the game. -

But most of schichida cards are picture cards in a variety of themes. some times, its one side picture and one side words. so I \"hide\" the pure dot cards and chinese word cards among those he likes. For the cards with words and pictures, I vary the sequence, my tone and what I say when I flash them. e.g. there a some cards with the theme \"sequence\" where you are suppose to say \"seed, plant, flowers fruits\" when you flash the pictures. So, instead of that I say, a seed grow into a plant, flowers grow from the plant and bear fruits. Or I flip them to show the words or I say it in chinese. For shichida, you are suppose to flash the cards for no longer than 1 sec. The theory is that the child's right brain absorb things very fast so they got bored easily. Other than the 1 sec method, there is not much other rule for schichida flash cards (other than for the dot cards)mincy:

of course, I don't manage to flash 300 all the time (in Shichida, they say you can flash up to 1000). there are some times when I don't flash at all cause my boy is simply not in the mood or too engross with his toys or books or want to do some of the other games before he wants to sleep. Sometimes, he can't get enough of flash cards and tell me he want some more even after I exhausted all my cards but sometimes he tells me he don't want flash cards. So, I just go with the flow. After all, reading or playing word games or playing with him or even watching DVD (we watch baby signing times & learn the signs together) is also part of bonding & learning. -

GD also emphasis on speed and frequency of new materials..I am doing my own cards now by putting photos or pictures to the words that i already flashed to her to be shown and explained to her by my maid during the day while i am at work.. this also reminds her of mummy and daddy while we are at work..Maybe i will try your style...story telling..
Hey chief, maybe set up another page to allow users to upload or share methods from the enrichment centres.
Mincy, are you at shichida still? you are able to buy the toys? I just bought a box of matching cards for memory and matching skills for my 8 mth old but it says for ages 2 upwards from growing fun..my 8mths olds takes the cards and put into her mouth!!! hahaha..(teething period la)..
