Hwa Chong Institution (High School)

IS is compulsory. It's graded into your son's scholastic MSG, and your son must hit the required C6 in order to be promoted to S2. However, I had one classmate who did not register for his project last year and was slotted into an existing group. My advice is that you should get your son to ask his classmates as there are probably still some who have not formed a group.Need to get some advice from parents of sec 2 & above..
Is IS project a compulsory project?
If the child is unable to form a grp with anyone, would he be allowed to do the project on his own (tho I think it's a bit tedious cos of the scope, but nothing is impossible)?
If the school expects the IS project to be done in grp, would the teacher slot the child into any existing grp that has not hit the max of 4?
DS was enjoying too much of his school life in HCI and did not bother to go ard forming grps with his classmates.. when he realized that he has to, it was too late.. his classmates had all found members and formed the grp of 4, so he's left with no classmates to collaborate.. and since he only has 1 ex-schoolmate in HCI, but already formed grp in another consortium, he has no other friends that he know to collaborate.
Appreciate advice from the parents of the seniors, so that we can know how to proceed with this. thanks. -
my son is also in Hci .he has only two members in his group. ask your son if he wants to join my son group.

Athletics: The secrets to Hwa Chong Institution's success
Channel News Asia, 7 Feb 2016
When it comes to juggling sports and studies, few can do it better than the students of Hwa Chong Institution.
The school is renowned for having produced some of the brightest minds in Singapore, and also has an illustrious history of having unearthed some of the biggest names in Singapore athletics.
They include sprinter Lee Cheng Wei, thrower Wong Kai Yuen and pole vaulters Rachel Yang, Sean Lim and Chan Sheng Yao.
Channel NewsAsia finds out if there is a secret behind the school's impressive track record.
THE NUMBERS GAME
With strength in numbers comes success for Hwa Chong Institution. Building an army of athletes is one of the reasons the school has won at least one division title every year since 1968 at the National Inter-School Track and Field Championships, when it was still divided into The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College.
Hwa Chong now has 200 athletes, coming from its High School and Junior College teams. They believe it is the camaraderie they share which drives them to success.
“ALWAYS STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE”
Hwa Chong also boasts an impressive pool of coaches, some of whom are former national athletes. There are nine coaches in total for sprints, long distance, jumps, throws, pole vault, and even race walking. They include high jumper David Woon and runner and four-time SEA Games medallist Lee Cheng Wei, who are both members of the school's alumni.
Steven Quek, the current coach of Olympic qualifier Neo Jie Shi and ex-coach of marathon runners Mok Ying Ren and Soh Rui Yong, helms the long distance team.
The pole vault team is coached by David Yeo, who still coaches SEA Games silver medallist Rachel Yang.
Despite boasting national experience in the team, Lee does not believe there is a coaching secret to Hwa Chong's success.
\"We have to go back to the values that we actually teach, especially to our track and field team. It's to always strive for excellence, and to have the discipline to do well in both track and field and studies. A good balance between CCAs and studies is important, so that we create well-rounded student-athletes,” said Lee.
Hwa Chong bagged three division championships in 2015 and now boasts a new weapon in its armoury.
Its new running track was completed last June, a high-quality surface certified by the world governing body for athletics, the International Association of Athletics Federations. The school hopes the track will enhance training efficiency and productivity for the athletes. -
anyone able to advise on the sabbatical programmes? Read that if one chooses say the Euler Programme, some sabbatical points would be deducted. Does each boy start with a fixed set of ‘points’ to bid for these programmees at the start of each year?
-
each year the child shall be allocated with some points, eg 1000pts. They shall use these points to bid for the programme they want for their sabbatical period, the highest bid gets it for some popular courses, especially if there is limited seats. Therefore they need to plan out their points wisely and not using too many for 1 term and left with too little for the rest. For Sec 1s, usually they need to go for a camp during their sabbatical wk during term 1. That saves their 1 term points. Some programmes need to pay course fees too.

Hi HCI parents, can I check with those from Sec 2 and above if they can share what the boys are required to bring for their Sec 1 camp? noting that the camp is less than 2 weeks away, but no info has been given on the things to bring for the camp, so would like to find out from the parents of older students abt the items. Appreciate advice. thanks.
