To be fair, I think people should not tag "good" or "bad" to a school. I don’t think there is really a "bad" school in Singapore. To me, the most important thing is the teacher your child gets. You can have very lousy teachers in the popular "good" schools as well. Or you can have very good teachers in the normal neighbourhood schools.

Academic excellence is not the only thing to look for in primary school education, what about character building ? team work ? All these should be equally important. And to me, my children must love to go to school and able to make good friends in school.

Parents’ involvement in schools also play a part in the children’s performance in schools. I noticed that children whose parents are more involved in the schools’ activities tend to perform better as well.

      Just some thoughts.

        ChiefKiasu:
Which do you think is the top primary school in Singapore?

Based on academic excellence, my top 5 ranking would be:

        1. Tao Nan
        2. Nanyang
        3. Nan Hua
        4. St. Hilda's
        5. Raffles' Girls

        What about yours?
How about Ai Tong? What's your view? Given a choice between Ai Tong (Phase 2A1) and Nanyang (Phase 2B), which one would you choose?

Ai Tong was very strong in the 1990s, but has been kind of relegated to the 2nd tier due to the very strong showing of the likes of RGS, Nanyang, Nan Hua, St. Hilda’s etc. It was only able to scrap up 2 national top 10 students in the last 7 years. However, there is no doubt it is still a very good and well-sought after school.

There were reports that our MM has sent his children and grand children to Nanyang Primary on a regular basis, so the school is well connected politically if that’s something you like.

            hello Chief,

Thanks for your sharings. Just a poll of vote. If you’re in my situation. Which option will you choose Nanyang (Phase 2B) or Ai Tong (Phase 2A1)?

I stay nearer to Nanyang (but still >2km) than Ai Tong.
            Regards

                  Hi MegBryan,

Nanyang is definitely a better school than Ai Tong. For Nanyang, are you in Phase 2B or 2C, your earlier post mentioned 2B but later post says 2C. If its 2B, I would think your chances are high. My colleague is a PV in Nanyang, and she mentioned that most if not all the PVs she knows for this year’s batch stays outside 2km (herself included).

Also, you have to consider if Nanyang, being single session is something you would consider as a plus point. Some people do, especially if they have more than one kid, it’ll be easier to manage if all are in the same session. Actually…I do wonder, Nanyang opens up 13 classes for primary one almost every year and operate in single session, they must have a lot of resources to be able to achieve that.

Anyway, where do you stay? if distance is not really a problem, than you can go for Ai Tong as its a guaranteed place.

If I'm not wrong, Nanyang (Phase 2B) if there is ballot then have to depend on luck. I still suggest that you go for Ai Tong where it is confirm a place.

Anyway this is how I feel. You have to make a decision.

Since there is no SAP School near my place, I don't have to consider that. Also I do not want to add stress to children esp in SAP School.

I was looking at the results of PSLE 2007 and I realized that only 3 of the top 15 pupils are boys!!! 😐

Strange considering more than half of a cohort are boys!

Does this mean in Pri 6, girls are more hardworking?

Generally girls are more matured and boys are more playful.
So i guess that plays a part in how they perform academically at 12 yrs old too. 🙂
