By \"struggle\", I mean in terms of academic and social skills.hi schweppes,

Different kids have different learning abilities. Some kids are very high functioning and can cope academically well but have difficulties making friends. Then, there are those who struggle to cope at school and socially.
For example, I know of two kids, let's call them A and B who are academically very bright. Both scored 250 and above for their PSLE T-scores. Both are very verbal and good in their communication skills, but socially inept and struggle to maintain friendships.
Some other kids are average in their studies, so they struggle to keep up with their peers in class.
Hard to say that kids who defer primary sch by a year means that they struggle less (or more). A lot of it depends on each individual, home support and external help (therapies, school support). A good support system will help ensure that the child is able to cope better in school. -

Hi, I would like to know, if my child is already accepted in the school but the assessment which is done after the P1 registration exercise highlighted that it's best for him to defer for a year. Does that mean we get to keep the place in that school till the following year or we still have to go through the registration process again? Appreciate your advice. Thanks.
If not mistaken, u can inform the school and MOE that your child will defer P1 by one year as long as u can produce the relevant documents.
To be extra sure, best to check with the school itself. Better still, make an appointment to see the VP if possible instead of checking with some admin person over the phone who may give u the wrong info. At the same time when talking to the VP (or even the P if she/he got time to see u), is to ask what learning support the sch can provide for your child. This is very important as we need the school's cooperation to help your child.
A good school (and by \"good\", I don't necessary mean the elite schools) will give the best teacher to nurture and bring out the best in your child. -
thanks guys for the info. We went KK and the consultant said my gal shouldn’t has issued to continue in mainstream as academic wise she is fine, although they are still going to assess her for auditory processing to help her in this area.

This post has not been updated much so thought I should add to it, in case useful for parents.Nuh CDU has school readiness assessment for kids who are deemed not ready for mainstream schools from feedbacks of kindergarten teachers. To get subsidized rates, can go polyclinic to get a referral letter. Advise to do the consultation early as it is a long waiting list to get the first appointment, about 6 mths. Consultations are very technical with lots of tests and questionnaires. There is also a year end programme where they will simulate a real school day for a few days at a school and the psychologists will be there to assess and write a report for the child new school.
This may be helpful if your child requires special attention or seating arrangement from the form teacher.
Verbal requests from parents do not work very well but a NUH letter works with MOE schools.
