Hi parents and piano teachers lurking around here,

I will be starting a formal teacher training course aimed towards adults who wish to get into teaching or beginning piano teachers. It is an intensive and demanding course that will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach up to ABRSM Grade 6 comfortably. I will be doing the course preview this Saturday and next Tuesday for those who are interested; there will be a mini lecture based on one of the topics covered in the course to give you a taste of what you will be learning.

      Course Preview@Smarthzy:
      5 September, Sat 7.30pm-9pm
      8 September, Tue 10am-11.30am

P.S. I understand that seats are very limited to Covid regulation and they are filling up fast according to my partner. So do reserve your place for the preview ASAP. Do visit my partner's Facebook page Smarthzy on how to register.

What are the criteria we should be looking on when searching for a piano teacher for your children?

The piano teacher should be patient and encouraging, showing passion, firm but fair and certifications to show the level of achievement of the teacher. Find out more details through https://www.singaporepianolessons.net/here.

Online Piano Lessons vs Physical Piano Lessons

I would like to seek professional advices/opinions if online piano lessons are good for young children aged 6 years old in the long term.

My child has been learning with an online teacher for 11 months, and I’m wondering if it’s time to go back to physical lessons due to a few reasons:

              1. Lack of public performances exposure
              2. Beginning to see child’s weakness in foundation as she plays more technically challenging pieces.

              Thank you.

The two points you raised are more about the quality of the teacher rather than simply online vs physical.

I think the warmth and the personal feedback that a physical lesson could never be replicated in an online lesson. I am actually quite amazed that your young child could stomach 11 months of online lessons.

Yes she has learnt 11 months of online lessons and she doesn’t really have any issue following the lessons. Her online teacher focuses more musicality and I think she’s lacking in foundation and techniques.

                      Hi all,

                      I would like to ask:

                      1. What should be covered in a typical piano lesson?

                      2. What does foundation mean in piano learning?

                      3. If a teacher only focuses on the repertoire for 3-4 months and no other aspects like theory, sight reading skills, etc is taught during lesson, will you change the teacher?

                      Thank you.
