      Muffins:
      jedamum:

      RE: Who; Whom.

Wa....still need some time to figure out what it all means. thanks everyone!

      RE: Whose
I just learnt something new yesterday. All along, i thought it is

      Statement 1: \"Whose car is this?\".

      Yesterday, i learnt that

Statement 2: \"Whose is this car\" is the correct one.

So is statement 1 also correct?

Hi jedamum, I think that statement 1 is the only correct one, as statement 2 is not used correctly, it can only be used as \"whose is this\", for a noun.

      Hope I helped! 😄

Not agreed. I think both statements are correct.

Statement 1 \"whose\" is used as an adjective of 'car'.
Statement 2 \"whose\" is used as a pronoun of 'car'.

It depends on what/where the stress is.

                Hi mum2010,

The 'Chinese' verses 'Mandarin' debate is an interesting one. Perhaps we could shed some light as to why 'Mandarin' is the correct answer.

Most people use 'Chinese' and 'Mandarin' interchangably. However, 'Chinese' is used to refer to the race and anything related to it (as an adjective).

                Example:

                - We like Chinese food.

                - The Chinese are good in Mathematics.

'Mandarin' is used to describe the official language of the Chinese people. There are many different Chinese dialects. However the Beijing dialect has been chosen to be the langauge used in the government, media and education. This Beijing dialect that is used is now referred to as Mandarin.

That is why we say 'we speak mandarin' and not 'we speak chinese'

                TAS

These questions are really a test of how often we speak loosely in our dialogues....

                      Q1:
                      (a) consult an attorney in itself is not wrong. but in this case, he is defending himself so it is no longer consult stage, he needs a lawyer to represent him, hence 'engage\" is more appropriate.
                      (b) engage - the answer
                      (c) only employer employs.....so it is clear although hire/employ has similar meanings and hire/engage can also be used interchangeably in an informal way.
(d)actually 'find' is a possibility because he may not have the network to connect him to a lawyer. But the possibility is low because there are always phone directories to find law firms, so 'engage' is more appropriate.

                      Q2:
Mandarin is a spoken language for the Chinese...so clearly it is (b)
