Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)
-
For Dance CCA this year, 5 was admitted from the audition. Not sure if there’s a reason for the small number or was it due to COVID but they are broken up into smaller group for online practices. The other thing to note is that Dance CCA also includes Chinese Dance in addition to Ballet. Their Chinese Dance is also very good.
For IP, the girls come from all over Spore and do blend in easily. -
My suggestion on CCAs is not to be too fixated or upset if one doesn’t get the CCA of choice. Have an open mind and heart, and go for as many auditions as possible. Even if you eventually get assigned to a UG - you will be surprised, UGs have so many learning opportunities and they accumulate useful courses / skills that are valuable. SCGS’ UGs are strong, and accomplished.
My DD was badminton captain in her primary school. She chose SCGS because of badminton! (SCGS has a famous badminton coach who has been with the school for many, many years.) My DD tried for SCGS via DSA, but she was not successful. In Sec 1, she tried again for Badminton for the CCA audition - but she was not on the highly recommended list. She was also aware, and was told that she would likely be a reserve player and not likely to make the cut for the main team representing the school. But the school was willing to admit her to the CCA if she chooses it. At that time, we didn’t know that Covid would occur!
Eventually, she did not opt for Badminton, and joined another CCA. Started from scratch - ground zero. To our absolute surprise, she has learnt so so much from the new CCA. It’s been a real blessing. She also got opportunities to represent the school, though she doesn’t win most of the time. Had she been in Badminton, I think her CCA life would have been very very disrupted with Covid as zonal and inter school competitions for many sports have not been held these two years.
The only con - aiyoh - as she is no longer in a sports CCA, her fitness level now is awful! -

Hi,
Hi, I have a few questions regarding subject combinations in Sec 3 IP.
1) I heard double science is the most popular subject combinations. Is this so? Are there still 2 classes each for triple and double Science classes?
2) My daughter is equally good in Physics and Biology and is indifferent which one to pursue if she go for Double Science. She is still uncertain of her future path yet. As such, should she take Physics or Biology?
3) How are the study hours like for Sec 3 & 4? I am thinking of asking her to try opt for Triple Science but am worried that 9 subjects might be tough to manage given she is currently taking Higher Chinese and I was told she is required to take Higher Chinese for O Level. She has regular CCA on Tues and Thurs as well as her extra enrichment classes outside school.
4) If she were to take Triple Science, other than the usual curriculum, are there other commitments outside school hours? And will there be a lot more projects compared to Sec 2?
5) Passion Pursuit - Is this taking place outside school hours? What is the Liberal Arts Academy about?
Hoping to hear inputs from parents or SCGS girls currently in upper Sec IP.
Thanks.
My DD just completed Sec 3 at SCGS. The info only applies to her batch.
For this year's Sec 3 and Sec 4s, there is one triple science class. I did hear that some years back, SCGS IP had two triple science classes. For the current upper sec classes, it's 1 triple science, 3 double science classes.
Triple Science kids will have 3 long days in school, i.e. 3 pm days.
I do not know what the criteria is to read triple science, but I do know that grades probably factor in somewhere. It is true that not all top kids opt for triple science.
Passion Pursuit - this takes placee during school hours. The project work your child undertakes will depend on the academy your child opts for.
Higher Chinese is my DD's worst subject since Sec 1 - pulls her overall score down without fail every year. But she likes Chinese. So she has not asked to drop HCL yet. Unfortunately, there will always be girls who cannot pass HCL whether at the end of Sec 2 or Sec 3, and they may be asked to drop.
Both my kids are taking / took triple science in upper sec - and I am not sure whether it was a science overdose or what, but both have decided they dislike science and will not pursue science (or at max take one science) in JC!
Between Physics and Biology - I guess this is quite personal to the child and it is difficult to answer. -
Hi
Thank you for all your replies. I have a clearer picture of the difficulty in joining dance CCA . Looks like only the cream of the crop is selected. Some of you mentioned the IP classes consist of girls from other schools and so it’s easy to make friends and blend in. How about the O level track? I doubt my girl can make it to the IP track. -
Usually, the COP for SCGS IP and O levels is about the same score…at most one point difference under the old PSLE scoring system.

Its a sheltered walkway via the overhead bridge, should be around 5 mins unless they want to use the traffic lights at the junction instead which could be slightly faster.
