Hi, understand that all of them will take HCL. Any tips for kids who did not take HCL at PSLE, how to bridge the gap?


Will the school be having additional cl lessons for these kids? Thanks in advance!

1) Is it mandatory to take HCL in RV whether is taken HCL in PSLE or not?

2) Year 4, all students are required to take HCL exam for O level. Is it correct?

3) For those who took HCL in PSLE, is it allowed to take normal chinese in Year 1?

All students in RV take HCL, regardless of whether they took HCL in primary school. Yes, they take GCE O Level for HCL at Sec 4. I think there are differentiated classes in Sec 1 for Chinese, based on their PSLE performance in the subject, so there'll be help for those who need it to catch up.

My son is studying in Sec 1 this year. He did not take HCL in primary school. I would say the school environment (ACC lessons, CCE lessons etc) and his Chinese Language teacher play an integral part in sustaining his interest in the language. He did not mention about differentiated CL class, but with consistent work, it is possible to do HCL in sec school without HCL background in primary school. His HCL grade is not stellar by any standard, but we are satisfied with B3 and hope to improve it next year.

Is there a minimum grade that the kids have to achieve in year 4 HCL O-levels, before they can drop it in year 5-6? What are the subjects that RV (IP) is stronger in at A-levels? Thank you.

My girl is interested in putting RV as her second choice. May I know how is the culture in RV like? Do the students speak Mandarin all the time ?

Are the teachers encouraging? I heard there are topical tests every week…

There is an emphasis on nurturing an appreciation for Chinese culture in RV but it's not extreme such that students speak Mandarin all the time. Teachers are supportive and offer consultation/remedial when needed.
