Some students (and parents, lol) chose 1 because it’s a logical and real life scenario response. Put on weight = need to exercise (on top of a good diet).

Some other pair of students and parents chose 2 because if you stick closely to the context, only ans 2 links back to the passage (吃多一碗饭 vs 煮少一碗饭)and thus, it is contextually the strongest.

We will never know what SEAB wants, logical answer or contextual answer? To kill the curiosity cat, one needs to await for the 3-year psle paper series to be published next year. 😂 But by then, heck Liao!
#3 is possible too. Puberty stage needs more nutrition.
#1 unless there is mention abt the kid is not active in the passage.

Actually feels like either 1 or 3 is correct. Cuz it’s puberty stage. And like they need more nutrition. So cannot be a mother asking a kid to cut down on food. So tricky. Increase in weight could be getting taller which requires more nutrition or getting fat might also mean need to do more exercise??? I dunno man.

This type of question in LC is similar to 完成对话 component of Paper 2 Booklet B.

Option 3 will be the first one to be eliminated because there’s no issue with type of food (e.g. fast food, lack of vegetables etc.) in the conversation.

Option 1 will be the better choice from context and language expression point of view, because 伟强 attributed his weight gain to eating more than 1 bowl of rice every time, the "其实" in Option 1 is responding to his point of view, highlighting/explaining to him that his weight gain is not purely because of that. Also, the issue raised by 伟强 was his gain in weight. Eating a bowl of rice will generally prevent this issue from escalating but cannot address/solve it.

After LC this year, the students knows what SEAB represents. Sadistic, Evil, Annoying Baboons.

              For discussion purpose only.

The OP was an extract of CL LC, not full passage, correct? Thought usually LC passage is much longer. I never pay attention.

If just based on post sharing, may not be accurate.

Kids may not choose #1 as there was no mention if the boy was a sports person already very active hence need to eat more or the boy was too inactive so need to do more exercise.
1 extra bowl of rice is also not our definition of balanced diet with protein and vegetables.

That's the full length for Q7's passage.

(an example from past year's Q7 passage:)
                https://i.imgur.com/ebckYMz.jpg\">

In 2017 when this rejoinder type question came out, there was https://www.zaobao.com.sg/zvideos/news/story20170920-796828 - for anyone who's curious, the official correct answer was 3 (key phrases was the friend's \"我不知道\", thus the answer \"刚刚开始学\" addresses that point by explaining why the friend \"不知道\" 😉 ). The spokesperson's comment was “考生需根据对话中所听到的遣词用字(choice of words)及语调(tone),依照对话的背景(background/situation of the conversation)得出适当解答。单看一些选项或许正确,但如果结合整个对话中的前因后果(cause and effect),可能就不是如此。”

It's ok though, there's bound to be tricker questions for differentiation purposes. For current year candidates, just move on and focus on the upcoming Paper 1 and 2. For perspective PSLE candidates, can take this as another reminder/learning experience - to identify the 遣词用字like发育时期,体重增加了不少,其实,就够了,吃有营养的食物。

In hindsight, these type of inferential questions are used as differentiator qns because in secondary school the kids will be encountering much more of such questions (and across all subjects).

SEAB is probably using these qns to determine who qualifies for IP, where the pace is so fast that the kids are assumed to be very adept at inferencing already.

Some Sec 1 Express and NA kids I know are still struggling with grasping how to draw inferences, and they even need patient, structured, step by step clues. It is not easy to teach actually.

I can’t agree more. It’s so annoying they put these questions to stress the children out. It’s so vague. In real life, we will be asking a question back to find out what the person is trying to ask. The exam formats are just so out of touch and out to torture the kids

I think the answer should be Option 1.
Option 3 is not suitable because there is no mention of the child's diet lacking nutrition or the child is picky.
In option 2, there is the 就够了 which means 'is enough'. But the context is the child overeats, not that he cannot finish the amount mum cooks.

Interpreting it literally (and if the excerpt is correct), option 2 means the mother will cook only 1 bowl of rice. The rest of the family must be on diet 😅

After Laoshi's explanation, option 1 seems like a better option.
